Here is my BMW E30 when I bought it a couple of years ago: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/SDC10103.jpg) It was an Alpine White 318i lux with suspected head gasket problems that I got for panels for and old scumball style rally resto project: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/IMG_2579.jpg) But in the end, because of rot like this found on the car that I had originally... ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/IMG_1903.jpg) ... I decided to keep the donor car and run with that

Then, whilst I was working away, one of my housemates got some ideas after watching Alan Partridge... This was the result: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/Beemer.jpg) Needless to say, a change of direction on the paint front was called for

The stripdown began: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/SDC10107.jpg) and ended up with me bringing down the neighbourhood at my girlfriends place: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/SDC10124.jpg) Given that my door rub strips were ruined in the 'cock curse word' incident I decided to do away with them altogether which meant some grinding and lots of filling was called for: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/SDC10129.jpg) And a tub of satin Nato Green was sourced for a bargain price... The painting began: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/SDC10165-1.jpg)

Then I got distracted for quite some time... Months passed and this was how my BMW looked: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/IMG_3909.jpg)

Anyway, to cut a long story short, in the end I got my act together and pressed on with the various filling and smoothing: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/SDC10320.jpg) ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/SDC10498.jpg) Until it all went back together: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/SDC10759-1.jpg) And this beast rolled out of the garage: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/IMG_0292.jpg) I had 5 days of trouble free motoring like this before the head gasket problems that the original owner had predicted reared its ugly head leading to collassal overheating, plumes of smoke and a seized engine...

I toyed with various engine swap plans and came very close to dropping an E36 2.5 24v straight six in. But as a bit of a novice, and a poor novice at that I opted for something a little simpler... An M42 16v 1.8 out of an E30 318is. For now it could run on the same gearbox, diff, mounts and generally be hassle free. The deceased M40 1.8 8v: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/SDC11213.jpg) Coming out: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/SDC11392.jpg) Faffing about and dropping in the new M42: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/SDC11421.jpg) And with it finally in: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/SDC11452.jpg)

Loving the colour choice, now a skyline or early 2.5 single tub supra would be an awesome engine swap when funds allow. :-)

I do like the idea of the supra engine... Could be a consideration for the future

Anyway, thats basically the last 24 months work summed up in a very small nutshell. All ancilleries are in now and after some electrical teething problems which turned out to be just me being a bit of a div, it's all running: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/DSCF7269.jpg) For a bit of fun I got busy with a roll of hazard tape ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/DSCF7294.jpg) Which tidyed up the door recesses nicely! ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/IMG_0363.jpg)

More recently I've been sorting some of the more niggly problems. Firstly, the exhaust... I've managed to source the downpipe and the middle section but am yet to find a back section (in my non-existant price range at least). Annoyingly the IS exhaust is completely different to the standard 318 exhaust which I have two of. But with a bit of butchery I'll get it poking out the back soon. So far: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/DSCF7228.jpg) The wire coat hanger isn't a permenant feature...

Recently decided to add a bit of 70's rally flair in the form of a satin black bonnet: Prep: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/IMG_0582.jpg) Paint: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/IMG_0586.jpg) Badges: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/IMG_0597.jpg) And on: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/IMG_0620.jpg)

Was pleased with how the tape came out. Although 1 winter later it's starting to peel a bit. Still makes me laugh every time I open the doors though!
Like your sig by the way; got a NES controller belt buckle which is just the best way to keep my jeans up!

An unusual swap, but it is good to see a good BMW engine in a car you would not expect.
The door aperture taped up is a brilliant idea!

Given a sunny saturday I thought I'd try and make some progress with the BMW... Firstly I thought I'd attend to the water ingress problem: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/IMG_1035.jpg) In a very simple way: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/IMG_1041.jpg) Was draining for quite some time: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/IMG_1045.jpg) Decided to ditch all the boot carpet as it was pretty minging and gave the boot a chance to dry out fully: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/IMG_1060.jpg)

Next was the exhaust... A friend had a stainless back box laying about. Have no idea what it came off; but it certainly wasn't a BMW! But, given that I have no money at the moment I thought I'd see what I could bastardise with what I had laying about. With a bit of frigging about i managed to get the back box reasonably close to where it needed to be (if I mounted it upside down). Just had to find a bit of pipe with the right angle on it... The tailpipe off an M40 system seemed close enough: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/IMG_1067.jpg) Unfortunately I had no cutting discs so all the cutting (six bits in total!) was done by hand! This bit needed sleeving as it was the same diameter as the existing pipe: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/IMG_1070.jpg) It may not be pretty, but it's functional!: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/IMG_1071.jpg) It all seemed to align well: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/IMG_1072.jpg) Bolted together: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/IMG_1073.jpg) The finished article: ![](http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy185/dubstar69/untitled-1.jpg) The tailpipe pokes out about 3" further than I want it to but as I was cutting everything by hand I really couldn't be arsed to shorten the two bits I would need to to make that happen; so for now it's staying as it is! (I obviously need to cut the old hanger bracket off too but gonna save that task for a day when I have a functioning angle grinder)
