Morning all,
I saw a 52-reg mini, which is unsurprising in itself, however it was a BMC/Leyland style one.
Would this have been built from a Heritage shell? even so, would it have needed an SVA? or even be capable of passing one?
Either that, or they were genuinely built up to this date, I've just never seen one that late is all....
ta,
Rich

I think they stop with the old prefix numbers, IE a Y reg is the latest factory issue one. But you see oddities like P reg Morris Minors and S reg Rover P5s from time to time.
I would imagine it would be some kind of unsold stock. There were some speculators bought the last run of the Mini Cooper and were selling delivery miles examples for a couple of years at massive prices. All the ones I saw were pre-registered but it doesn't mean there wasn't unregistered ones as well.
A herritage shell would retain the number of the original car.

Might it have been built from a shell without a donor or heavily modified and newly registered rather than Q-plated?
Don't some of the Z-cars Minis end up as 'new' cars?

Also Wood and Picket have been building some completely new Minis in 2010. But it's beyond my knowledge how they registered it. www.woodandpickett.com/cars-for-sale/17/A 52 plate is about 2002, isn't it? I can imagine, that there were still some cars left at the dealer's in 2002/2003 which were then sold & first registered? If that's possible, I'm not from the UK. But I know of some cars in germany that were first registered in 2001 or 2002 There's even a dealer left with a couple of brand new Minis, all with sub 100km on the clock They had been registered & SORNd though, otherwise you couldn't get them legaly on the road anymore nowadays (emissions and such). Cheers, Jan

If you pass an SVA and all the parts of the car are new (i think you are allowed one reconditioned item, gearbox etc) then the car will have a new reg plate and wont require a mot for three years as it will be a brand new car.
This is what a lot of kit car builders do. This was the case for SVA and I assume for IVA thats in place now.

There were some speculators bought the last run of the Mini Cooper and were selling delivery miles examples for a couple of years at massive prices. Not just the last run, the first run of the reissued Cooper was the same. I had one of the first thousand on an H plate but the The VIN above (or below, can't remember) mine was wearing a P plate according to the owner's register. I always assumed that to be because the car was never registered at the time? back to the OP... What makes you think it was a BMC/Leyland style car? It's been a few years since I had Minis but there were always guys retro-fitting Austin or BMC era rear light clusters and other details that made it look much older, and cooler. It could be a last of line Rover car that hung around a dealer until 2002 and ended up with some body mods.

Either way, It's all the same, I meant it to differentiate between a classic mini and the BMW car. Interesting though. I'll get some pics if I spot it again. I couldn't get any as I was driving in traffic this morning.

hehehe very nice..
Mk1 rear light conversion, 10" steel wheels, but the lack of external hinges and the front wing indicator repeaters give it away.
And if i remember correctly, the windows were made bigger in the later body shells.
Still looks ace! I wish i'd have built one like it instead of messing around with all those 1275GT's

One possibility is that it could be something along the lines of a Mini Minus or FRA Mini. Replacement fibreglass shells, rather than Z-cars style modified shells, which would need to go through an sva/iva thus opening up the possibility of a new registration. These can usually be spotted close up by the lack of external seams. From a distance though they look very Austin/Morris/BMC/Rover like. I've always fancied a Minus. www.minus-cars.com/home.freeuk.net/tdkracing/FRA.htmDiggin' the mk1 conversion.
