I'm in need of some info regarding the Volvo 2.3 turbo, more precisely that which was bolted to the 940. I'm picking one up next week some time. I know there were two power outputs 165 and 190 but how can I tell what I have? Also, does any one know the weight of the motor + box? Any weaknesses? I've read the coolant system can over pressurise at high rpm and pop the core pugs out, any other little niggles? What turbos do they use as standard? best upgrades? Any knowledge you can bestow will be gratefully received I'll leave it at that for now ;D Have some tasty Ovlovs

Hi I think you saw my green 2.3 turbo estate at A52 last playday ;D Anyway here is what I have learnt so far. There are actually three power outputs, the low pressure turbo (LPT) is 135BHP & high pressure turbo (HPT) is 165BHP. The 190bhp you mentioned is from the Turbo+ kit which is very rare & basically just held extra boost for 30 seconds at wide open throttle to help with overtaking. You can spot the difference between the LPT & HPT for sure by checking a sticker on the cam cover housing, LPT will have engine code B230FK & HPT will say B230FT, also the LPT's don't have a turbo gauge in the dash but HPT's do. Mine has the M90 five speed tranny which is from 1995 onwards & is much stonger than the earlier 4 speed + overdrive M47 manual & is supposed to be good for 300bhp. The only difference between the LPT's & HPT's mechanically is the wastegauge actuator so with the addition of a decent boost gauge & manual boost controller (MBC) any car can be turned into a very high pressure turbo . Stock LPT's run 4psi of boost, HPT's 7psi. You can run at least 10psi with no problems on the stock ecu. I have already put a calibrated boost gauge in mine & will be fitting a MBC next month. Standard turbo is a Mitsubish TD04 Hope that helps And enjoy your turbobrick! what he said /\ Turbos are either garrett t25 or mitsubishi 13c. You can use the turbo off a 760 which is slightly larger than the 940 turbos though you'll need to open out the port in the exhaust to turbo flange as the port is a major restriction otherwise. Intercooler is a big easy improvement. you can squeeze a blackstone intercooler (from a ford eurocargo). I've had a couple of volvo turbos. the first one was a 940 the second was a 240 with a 940 engine. Superb cars and rock hard mechanicals. 940 2.3, 140,000 miles. 0-60 6.5. top speed 140 mph. T3 turbo fuel and spark ecus chipped. truck IC mbc set to 14 psi. polished 531 cylinder head. www.youtube.com/user/suterman100?feature=mhee#p/u/2/WYM2nAPKJHwEventually, this happened. It was due to my dodgy built turbo oil return pipe that got a bit hot and leaked. www.youtube.com/user/suterman100?feature=mhee#p/u/1/BKVNre0URnQNext up was this 240. Brand new rebuilt B230fk T3 turbo Stock IC Stock ECUs Boost raised to 10psi 40mm lowing springs Bilstein HD shocks Polybushed all round 225 profile tyres on galaxy wheels. www.youtube.com/user/suterman100?feature=mhee#p/u/4/nUxdY56hEmI (video taken with car loaded up with parts from the scrappy so I was taking it careful on the bends) Not so much of a performer as the 940 but it was a good base for power upgrades. I sold it in the end as I was tending to drive too fast all the time, got stopped by the police once for racing a bike and had a few dodgy moments. (regretted it ever since)

Just make sure you clean out the PCV box and pipes (under the inlet manifold) it might be worth buying a new PCV box they're only about 20 quid and they do get very crudded up

Loving the Volvo chat I am interested in the same thing, I am going to drop a B230FT into my 740GL saloon in the next few months, I have found loads of tuning info on turbobricks.com. It is full of up themselves goons who don't like new comers unless they know the everything about Volvo's, however if you trawl through the archives it has alot of hidden delights There are alot of good eggs on that website to, however when reading up and posting questions there was no friendly vibe. I also emailed a guy on there called Cameron Daline, he has built a monster! Sound guy replyed to my emails etc. Also found this so far - www.torquecars.com/volvo/740-tuning.phpLooking forward to some turbo power www.torquecars.com/volvo/740-tuning.php

Turbobricks is a good community, or at least it was when I used to go there, though I did notice there were quite a few young cocks who thought they were clever and were quite often rude but there were also some really cool people.
turbobricks had a vibrant off topic section which allowed people to chat outside the subject of volvos which allowed the users to get to know know one another a bit better.
BTW, I've noticed a food theme here.
We have butter, jam and melted cheese, now all were need is some toast and a cup of tea.
I learnt a lot about cars and tuning there.

I registered on turbobricks when i had my 3.0 24v 960 asking for advice and help, no-one even bothered to reply to my posts....despite the fact I joined in and helped out on some other problems first...
didnt bother going back there...
I had a 740 as well, both brilliant cars, you cant go far wrong with a old school Ovlov estate!

Thanks for that everyone. Those links were really a great help, Jammzr. For a little bit of context; I wont be keeping the car. It's getting delivered, I'm taking anything I want off it for a fixed sum and then it goes back to get weighed in. Really useful tbh as I want to get the loom stripped down as much as possible whilst it's in the car, so I know it runs, before it gets hoiked out (a B&D lesson I think?). If it'll fit, it's going in the chevette

If it'll fit, it's going in the chevette Mental. Perfect ;D I was always pleasantly surprised of my B230e (K-Jet, N/A). I'm sure a turbo will be awesome. When put in 240s, they need to have the dizzy moved from the head to the block using 240 bits IIRC. Give me a shout fairly soon if it looks like you need those bits because I've got mine sat on the garage floor and it isn't going back in the car... Same if you want a spare sump to chop up or whatever

The 2.3 turbo engine is great. Easy to work on, tune and modify. Heres a few pics of my 760t from 3 yrs back.

Can you do the same thing on the 2 litre turbo lump? I have been looking at the 2.3T for a while as i saw some info about upping the boost and thought i fancy a bit of that, but i have spotted an ok looking 940 Wentworth 2.0 LPT.
I don't know curse word all about Volvos though so not gonna go show interest if its not as easy to up the boost for good results as the 2.3

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.
