I was working at a friends farm today and went into the car field, which is a retro lovers heaven, although is a sad sight as most of the cars in their are dead. Whilst looking for a discovery expansion tank I spotted a car I didn't recognise. Apart from its Diahatsu badge. After speaking to the owner I was told it was a Diahatsu F50 and that he doesn't want it. It is pretty far gone. I got it started though and it does drive. But most of the body work is shot. I just think is a mega cool looking thing and wondered if anyone knows anything about them. Also is a seriously rusty example worth attempting to save? I'm going up their tomorrow with a camera for some pics. Paul

cant be that hard to fix up? looks mostly flat panels and its not like you'd need to make it super smooth to get away with driving it.

I think you used to be able to buy a fibreglass replacement body as they seemed to rot from new, might be worth having a look in one of the kit car magazines, Very utilitarian though, although if you've driven it you'll know that much.

Oh It is very rotten but it mostly seems to be the front end. I do want it though. Might have to fix it up and hide it from SWMBO ;D

Found some info ;D F50 means it has a diesel in it F10 have a smaller petrol than F20. All have the same body shell and running gear. 5 speed box was an option. The generic name for all of them is a Diahatsu Scat Now really want it ;D ;D

*diverts spat wine away from keyboard and onto the sofa instead* ;D Incredibly cool. I think I'd have to take a similar attitude to P U T. It'll be separate chassis and next to no compound curves.. How hard can it be to cobble it into an MOTable state? Depends on whether you'd be happy to repair or if you wanted to restore I guess..

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

In a village not far from here there is a mint one, very nice. So they don't all rust. The owner also has a mint Subaru Brat. Brat & Scat.

I'm quite a fan of the F series Daihatsu's pretty jeeps, quite rare though but occasionally pop up in ebay.......remind me of the early FJ Landcruisers

They look pretty cool. As an aside I once googled for Scat searching for VW tuning bits. I knew what it also meant and even so I was horrified. Google safe search on from now on lol.

Funny, I thought those were generally known as Taft over here. If a rotten 1600 petrol turns up in someone's field I would definitely be interested in the engine as its a Toyota 12R.
They did a retro styled modern jeep called a Daihatsu Naked. For the home market I presume.

The F50 reminds me a lot of the Toyota Landcruiser of this vintage: I think you should buy it and get it welded back together I really wish I hadn't googled 'scat' in the meantime... At least I wasn't eating chocolate ice cream containing chocolate chunks, coated with a liberal application of chocolate custard......
