anyone know anything about them? the westco battery on my mx5 is screwed. cheapest i can find a new westco is around £80. the shuriken battery is 35ah and has 750 cranking amps, twice that of the westco. they are also a bit cheaper and share the same absorbed glass matt construction (cant use a regular lead acid battery due to it being in the boot, as they can rot the boot out!) the battery needs to take some abuse as i want to put a decent stereo install in and the westco seems to be struggling with an uprated stereo and speakers, let alone adding an amp and sub!

IMO the talk of normal batteries rotting the boot out is mostly tosh, I've put a normal battery in the back of my MX5 and its been fine - Think how many cars run lead acid batteries in the back with no issues. off the top of my head most newish BMWs do, all the way back to a classic mini.
Besides, most new batteries have a little stub to connect the vent pipe in the boot to, which vents any gas out of the vehicle.

think i would still rather have a gel or agm battery. if nothing else, they seem to handle big current draws better for their size

Rot the boot out??? Even though that sounds like curse word... Cant you put it on something sacrificial?
Like a alloy plate, Put it in a battery box?

Iirc, it's the gas that gets vented from a lead acid bettery that's corrosive. As for the OP, I'd just get the biggest one I can afford. But then I've never used a non lead acid battery, so my opinion is largely useless.

And to a lesser extent, Acid gas But thats only realy evident on older batteries where one pole is significantly corroded. Hydrogen gas will rot, But very slowly. And i very much doubt your mx5 is going to be lasting 50 odd years until you notice any effect. In all honesty, Id be placing it on a battery matt and not worrying about it. If it has a vent take off. Add a pipe from that to a outside area if you realy care.

There's an outlet vent on the side that can be vented outside the car with aid of a tube.

I'm still hellbent on a gel or agm battery. ive seen pics of other mx5s where there is not much left of the boot. mx5s don't need much of an excuse to rust! thanks for all the opinions though
