Am having trouble starting my Vauxhall Royale ('81). It has coil and distributor quite similar to my VW Polo ('83). Both Bosch. I've been using the Polo manual's Fault diagnosis - ignition system (Chapter 4 section 10 para 6 onwards) as a guide
Am a bit confused and need advice!
I don't know if the coil is perhaps faulty (cos of low volt reading from negative terminal) but am also puzzled by manual which says:
'remove the condenser from the distributor and remove the distributor cap, rotor and dust cover. With the points open, test between the moving point and earth. If there is now a reading then the fault is in the condenser....'
It then says
'With no reading from moving point to earth, take a reading between earth and the negative [-] terminal of the coil. A reading here indicates a broken wire which must be renewed between the coil and distributor....'
Does this mean you need to actually unscrew the condenser from the distributor and disconnect the wires or just disconnect its spade terminals from the points and the green 'coil to distributor' wire? Also why do you need to do this?
The way I see it. If you remove the condenser completely you will not have any connection to the coil as the green wire from the coil to the distributor is made via the condenser so you're never going to get a reading from the moving point to earth if the condenser is removed.

- Am def getting current from ignition switch to coil + terminal, (no. 15)
- Am also getting 12v reading from the moving point to earth - with points open and condensor connections in place
- also getting a low reading from - (no. 1) coil terminal to earth
