My girlfriend has just been offered a lhd mexican built beetle for £2000. The only drawback is that she's bad enough driving a rhd car so she'll be terrible driving a left hooker. So my question is this. How hard/easy is it to convert one to right hand drive and how much would it cost?

its not impossible to do, but you'd need to source a new passed dash. Get a rhd beam etc, then mount the column. I have no idea on cost. To be honest, i would keep it left handed. Or if you want it right handed just buy a RHD bug. You should be able to find a goodun for £2k.

Sounds like a royal pain in the backside. Already told her not to bother buying it, but a 1996 Mexican bug with totally rot free bodywork is hard to pass up, even if she'll struggle driving it. I've got a feeling she'll ignore me and buy it anyway

the RHD mexbugs imported by Beetles UK (basically most or all of them since 2000ish) were converted LHD models anyway so it's possible but definately a job for someone who's done it before. i'd guess new beam, new dash and possibly some extending of the loom for dashboard lights etc. most of the steering gear bolts onto the beam though so you just unbolt it from the lhd one and bolt it on the rhd one. it's possible to convert them i think, the bracket for the steering damper needs moving. lhd driving is fun and easy - overtaking is an issue but in a 50bhp beetle it becomes less of one

LHD is easier IMO, its not like you overtake a lot in a bug

Mex's are cool, but they're not anywhere as near to the quality of a german built one, so keep it well rust proofed and keep it serviced properly if she does. It's not a bad car, in that they are still a solid well made car, a much better choice than a Kia Piccanto

She's changed her mind now. She was only thinking about it after the Mini had a coughing fit, backfired and blew a puff of black smoke out of the back at 90mph then wouldn't go above 70. I took it out thursday to see what was up and it pull even better than it did before, speedo only go's up to 90 and I had it off the clock, most I've ever had out of it.

She'll be fine. Might make her a better driver in the long run?
