The clearout continues…
After much consideration it is with a heavy heart that I have decided to part with my mk2 GTi 8v. I simply have too many projects on the go and not enough time/energy/motivation to work on them all – just keeping a few on the road is a full time commitment.
So here it is
1987 Mk2 8v GTi
156k miles
No Tax, MOT recently expired (failed – read on!)
Very little paperwork as far as I can remember. I think there’s a service booklet documenting up to the last couple of years, no receipts or owt tho.
Bought as a smoker to tide me over for a few months, she has served her purpose well but the last MOT was a bit of a letdown. Failed on
• Both registration lamp bulb not working
• Nearside front position lamp excessively deteriorated
• Nearside outer sill seat belt anchorage area is inadequately repaired
• Nearside rear brake pipe inadequately supported
• Offside outer front sill seat belt anchorage area is excessively corroded
• Nearside inner rear wheel arch seat belt anchorage area is excessively corroded
• Offside steering rack gaiter split
• Nearside Macpherson strut has excessive movement at the upper attachment
• Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide context excessive (5.03%, not 3.5%)
The welding put me off but I priced up a sill and arch for about £40 all in. The other bits were available from GSF/ECP for not a lot more.
There’s rust on the doors and tailgate, a few car parking dings here and there, I think one of the gearbox flanges is leaking but the engine pulled like a train, even up to the day I parked her for the last time. Gearbox was sharp into all gears, no 2nd gear crunch at all. Not tappety or noisy on startup
Interior was partly stripped out with a view to the welding work needed but will obviously be supplied – in very good nick except the driver’s bolster has collapsed but the fabric is still intact. Parcel shelf and doors have been mangled for speakers though – and there’s no stereo. She’s currently rolling 13” steelies (2 of which are past the legal limit) just for shoving around the workshop
I’ve probably made this sound worse than it is – if I didn’t have a mk1 needing a new HG, a beetle to rebuild and a camper van haemorrhaging oil I’d be working on this as I think it’s saveable. However I’ve priced to reflect the value of a good engine, gearbox and scrap.
