very nice (and from the pictures VERY basic) . Is basic a good or a bad thing? I found the original price for it, without options - £45,750. In 1991. Eep! Does look like there were a few options available - full leather, de-chrome, servotronic (not sure if mine's got that), climate control, memory seats, heated seats, cruise, auto dipping mirror, rear window blind and a hi-fi speaker system (again, not sure if I've got or had that).......might have to retrofit an auto dipping mirror, that'd be quite neat.

That's just lovely!
Out of interest - are the clear indicators Hella branded or aftermarket? later ones came with them but I'm not so sure the 3.6 had clears as standard.
Oh and I think I have a NOS fog lens for it. Was waiting to find the other side as well and build a perfect set up for myself, but this car is just lovely so I don't mind!

Indeed - I think it should have had orange ones as I've got reciepts from BMW during the late 90s for clear lenses (I think they were something stupid like 40 quid each, ouch). I assume they'd be genuine ones? Thanks for the offer of a replacement lens too - I'm watching this one at the moment, first (can't be doing breaking up your potential set) - is it a Hella one? cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310308849086Ta!

Looking at it, that eBay one looks slightly different to the one on the car. Hmm! Have to take a closer look this weekend...

I'm a fan of the 3.6l . . and I think a M5 doesn't need full options . . you might wanna check this out . . retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=99424clear turn lights sure were not stock on a 91 . . and I think it would look better with amber ones . .

If they came from BMW, then yep, they'd be Hella. says on the lens anyway. If you change them, I want! My lens is a genuine BMW Hella one still in it's box. It would be a shame to break up the set - if I actually thought I'd ever see another one lol. You could have slight difference to the one on ebay if you have a non-projector type fitted, but really it should be the same, there was no difference in E34 fogs that I'm aware of, apart from the smoked/yellow ones of course.

is it fair to say then that buying the next model down like a 540 or something would be alot cheaper to maintain than an "M"? but still reasonably quick and fun to too drive?

Thanks for the positive comments everyone bstardchild, prices are silly aren't they - seen a few where you could definitely buy an entire car for less! is it fair to say then that buying the next model down like a 540 Oddly enough I had a 540i, with AC Schnitzer suspension, and a 6-speed box - but this is definitely more fun to drive, the whole thing just feels more purposeful and alive. It might sound odd but it has a real sense of occasion to it, as well, when you take it out. I guess it's as a result of it being an 'M' car and handbuilt - it just feels that little bit special, especially when that six is idling away...... I'll try and get some video this weekend

surprisingskoda, I may take you up on that lens if you've still got it - I missed the other one (fail). How much do you want for it? I've been playing around with some new camera mounts, still need to work on the positioning and sound - but getting there. Here's a low-quality sample that I uploaded just to get some engine note win going I think you know when you've got a car that you love driving when you don't feel the need to turn the stereo on - even if you're cruising.

Well, so far I've put about 500 miles on the M5 and it's been great. I'm using it primarily as a weekend toy, as I have no call to use it during the week and that also means that it doesn't clock up massive mileage: I've have used it for work too, on the odd occasion, as it's quite a conversation starter. All I need is some braces for the full on 80s/90s banker look.... One of those cars that I've found instant confidence in, even to the extent that I'm happy to let others drive it: In other news, I've yet to really do anything to it bar enjoy it. A set of new wipers are on order (OEM Bosch, to keep it all within spec) and at some point soon I'll give, or get, it a full service. It's got comprehensive service history and I'd like to keep it that way - after all, it'll help keep it in tip-top shape. I have, however, been poking around potentially chipping it - a few US tuners make some excellent plug-in chips for it that don't alter the factory limiter (7250rpm), unlike others that raise it to 7500/8000rpm, and it makes about another 10bhp and 15ft.lb. Not a massive amount, I'm sure you'll agree, but a useful gain. It'll probably be the E.A.T chip, by Mark D'Sylva, that I settle on. Reputedly pulls a lot harder at low engine speeds and improves throttle response, which I wouldn't complain about - although the '5 goes pretty well as is! A decent service will come first, however, to make sure everything's as it should be. As previously mentioned, there is something odd about this car - I've never once felt the need to turn the radio on. At all. It just feels like it occupies your attention fully, even if you're just cruising along, and there's zero need for any distraction. It occupies your mind entirely. I wasn't sure if it was just me - but my friend, in the pics, took it out for a spin and came back saying exactly the same. A good thing, in my books.

Oh, I found out that it has electrically adjustable headrests, too. That's a rare feature, even by today's standards....
Glad I've got my Dad to point out things like that - I'd have probably never noticed, otherwise!

I've never had a '5 with electric seats, so it's a new one on me I didn't mean for the 5-Series in particular though, just in general compared to other cars

Great work lewis! This car looks a total minter. I love this picture: Well all your pictures are good, but that one looks like its come straight out of an advert or running report in a 90's 'Fast lane' magazine! QUALZ. Whats it like on juice?

Haha bo11ox, I did think that too Fuel-wise it's not as terrifying as I expected. If I'm on a long run it tends to do around 25-30mpg when just cruising. If I'm at a fair old clip across country then it's usually an average of around 15-20mpg but that's not bad given the performance. The handbook lists fuel consumption at a 90mph cruise (as well as the usual), seems to be a German thing as so does my Dad's Merc handbook! At that pace it's still a (quoted) sensible 30mpg. Ideal for covering vast tracts of ground - like the A421. Hmm, maybe not.....
