I haven't had a chance to clean it properly yet, so it's had no wax or detailing - just a rough wash. I do have the centrecaps for the alloys, before anyone asks - they're just a pain to fit and also look liable to come off and decapitate someone It's got a 3.6 litre 24 valve straight six, packing 315bhp and 266ft.lb, and it puts that power down through a five-speed gearbox and a limited-slip differential. 0-60 comes up in around 6 seconds and it's electronically limited to 155mph. Other than that it's got the usual stuff like air-con, central locking, total closure, electrically adjustable seats (including electric thigh supports) and so on. The rear suspension is also self-levelling, with a terrifying system of pipes, accumulators and hydraulics! It's going to take some getting used to - but it's thoroughly engrossing to drive. There's only a few minor things to sort, too, like a broken foglight lens. Can't complain for a twenty year old! I love it, if I'm honest I don't intend to do much barring make it pretty much perfect and just enoy it. I think you'd be hard pressed to improve it! Expect to see it out and about in due course

Spot the continuity errors as the M5 turns, at random, into a 535i or a 535i with M5 alloys and maybe, if you're lucky, an M5 badge

Hmmf this is lovely. You do have a knack for finding really clean interesting cars. So many of these had their wheels swapped out for OMG massive rimz but that looks just right.

Gorgeous! Such a good looking car and yours looks very clean too.;
Although I'd defintiely have to re-fit the centre caps and some amber indicators.

beautiful.
i'm guessing they are the standard alloys? i think they are the only thing on the car i question. That said i'm not a fan of the contour (?) alloys found on E34 m5s
i have been thinking of ripping the engine out of one of these for my E32 for a little while as i would assume it to be a nut and bolt conversion but i have never driven one. Does the power ever feel lost with the weight of the car at all? My only worry is that the weight of the E32 might bog the engine down and leave the driving experiance a little weak.

Brennon, they are indeed the standard alloys - the 'turbines', which have a separate bolt-on section which is used to force air into the brake discs. Underneath they look like this: I think I know the other style you mean - those Contour alloys aren't particularly attractive, are they. I had, however, some of the 'throwing star' look ones on my old 540i 6MT, they were pretty swish: I definitely prefer the earlier ones - they are a bit love-it-or-hate-it but I think they've got some real style and period interest to them. I guess you don't see many of them wearing the originals, these days, either. The engine definitely has to be worked hard to get the best out of it - it's no torque monster, after all - but once you get it going it just doesn't let up and it constantly feels like it just wants to go, go and GO. This weighs about 1650kg I think, so probably not far off an E32! I can't help feeling that a tuned, or turbo'd, M30 3.5 might be a better (and infinitely cheaper in terms of the swap and running) idea - or maybe a 4.0 or 4.4 V8? An "M7" build would be absolutely epic, though........Hmm! I like your thinking

ahhhhhhhhh i have seen the turbines before! never realised it was a bolt on part! it all makes sense now!!! i was worried that you were going to say that about the engine i would like to stay away from a turbo set up purely because i despise turbo lag!! the 4.4 has been considered many times but i have pushed it aside as a) it would be more economic to convert a v8 E32 to manual and b) cost would not be far off the m5 engine. I think i prefer the thought of the m engine as it would look nicer! and i could claim it to be an m7!! ;D

Love that, always wanted an E34 M5 b ut hate the wheels with the extra trims on but they look mint without them, thats the only mod I would make.

Brennon, maybe you could always try a 3.8 instead? I think that's a bit more like 295ft.lb, all at quite high revs though (4750rpm IIRC). Still, shave a bit of weight off and you could have a real super-saloon..... Supercharged M30B35 mayhaps?

Thanks I'll have to give that a whirl next weekend. I have to say that I was quite suprised out how good that headunit sounds. I have a more period tape deck that I was going to swap in but to be honest it doesn't look out of place and works really well. MP3 cassette adpator is the way forwards I think! 520 project could be fun! Any ideas? I think a little lowering, some cleaning up of trim and lights, a set of good alloys and all the OEM bits (like cruise, leather, facelift bumper etc) can really sharpen them up a treat.

Thanks (and to you too, Rav)! Potentially a quick route to accumulating bank-wrecking bills but buy smart, or maintain smart, and you should be relatively OK. They're mechanically and structurally quite tough, as it's a 5-Series after all, but the M-specific bits command a hefty premium and most people don't have the time or the tools to fix the bits that do go wrong - leading to them accumulating horrific bills. Ones that have been neglected can be a nightmare. Case in point is the SLS rear dampers - they're usually around £500 a corner or something like that, then you have the cost of fitting, so people easily rack up £1-2k bills to get that fixed. Look around, however, and you can get them recon'd for £250 each. Much more palatable This one doesn't have the overly complicated EDC adjustable suspension all round, or the seemingly more frail 3.8 litre engine, so fingers crossed it shouldn't throw up anything unexpected provided I take care of it - just simple things like keeping the cooling system, fluids, hoses and general service items up to date, really.

yeah you can only choose between green or orange but the green breaks up all the orange, and if its on green now you can make it all orange.
yeah my 5 series i've had 2 weeks and its up for sale as i don't know what i should do, might see what interest i get in it if there isn't much then ill have to make some changes to it.

I think it's 50/50. A lot people seem to buy them thinking they can run them on a budget - because it's just a 5-Series, isn't it? - then promptly wreck them or find they can't, and sell them on, so the whole nasty process starts again.
.....or, alternatively, they don't care for them properly, then they break and cost a fortune to fix as they can't do it themselves, or they don't look around for the best place to get bits (like the SLS damper example I posted).
They were expensive cars though, no doubt about that.....
