Couple of weeks ago, the gearbox on my micra went bang, rattle rattle and proceeded to eject all the gearbox oil. Did still drive though. Have finnaly had the chance to pull the box off today and I'm not quite sure what failed. Something has hit the flywheel causing it to grind around the bellhousing and take a chunk out of the gearbox causing the oil to come out it damaged the starter motor housing. There where 3 small bit's of metal in there, flatish pieces that seem like a coke can type material. Flywheel looks ok, clutch has a scratch (gouge) across it's case. Any ideas? need's a new box but what about everything else? And some pics for looking:

No that is confusing for the flywheel to do that either the box has come unbolted from the block and was flapping about or the crank has been flapping about or the flywheel is loose Flywheels are very solidly mounted they don't just flap around the bellhousing unless something major has come loose

What condition is the clutch plate in? has some of it parted company and been thrown out. that's the only thing I can think of which would have thin metal in.

You had it long?
I had a car that the PO had put a new engine into. Hadn't torqued the flywheel right, it came loose and gouged out the bottom of the bellhousing.

Had it 6 months, think it's the original engine.
Don't think the flywheel is loose, just what ever came off fit the fly and caused all the damge. Thinking of breaking it, if it needs clutch, gbox and starter motor and mot it could be easier.
The clutch was ok, but I suppose it could have let go.

Clutch pressure plate is all I can think off that would give thin metal. Perhaps maybe bit of the release bearing or clutch actuating fork.
Cant think of much else that would give thin metal

Could the crank oil seal or input shaft seal have a steel stiffening ring??
If so, could be a bit of that?

Get your local weilder or engineering shop to put a blob of weild over the hole, new clutch and you should be good to go, good luck.

Had an issue getting the gearbox off so sadly that isnt an option.... So will need g.box and clutch. Still not sure what to do with the car
