Ive been watching a car, an Audi 80 CS probs an 1983 or 84 model parked up at the side of the road for approx 1 and a half years. It has not moved in all that time, the tyres are now flat, nobody in the area knows who's it is and it has no tax, plus its got moss growing down one side. Its on a main road parked in a row of cars so doesn't stand out to police or council. problem is it has a polish number plate so no record of it on DVLA. body work seems ok apart from rust on rear arches. can i just take it and register it in my name or not? would be a shame if it got towed away and crushed. Any advise would be appreciated.

Any advice would be appreciated. Yep - leave well alone. Its still someones car so would still be classed as theft. Registration could be a problem too. Get some money together for a project that wont see you in court - or a polish mafia grave. |

Sorry to say that dude but with Polish plates you almost certainly can't do anything... I'm not sure what are the procedures for importing cars and what documents you would need but any chances of obtaining a Polish logbook are very very thin as it's extremely bureaucratic over there. You can't just send your logbook and get a new one in your name. You have to queue for hours and sign the papers yourself and everything works in person. I'm pretty sure even to change the registered keeper you need a sale document signed by both parties and reg plate changes with every owner. It's overly overly complicated... What registration number does it have? You can normally tell where it's from by that. I'll be in the land of Poles fairly soon and if it's from somewhere local to me I could maybe pull a few strings and find out the owners details. I can't guarantee it but PM me in about 3 weeks if it's still there. Possible scenario is that the owner used it to drive to the UK, worked for some time and decided to take a plane back as it was a lot cheaper than driving the car. He maybe even left the documents inside... Take couple of pictures too, I'm curious!

You can't claim a car. It's not yours. The registration document is not an ownership document. Take a car, register it in your name and it's still not yours. Although to get it back the owner would need to find you and bring a private prosecution as the police probably wouldn't act.

These threads come up quite often. They always end up the same.
Personally, if I'd left my car parked up for a couple of years because I'd unexpectedly been in a coma or been wrongfully imprisoned for crimes committed by someone of a similar name or whatever, I'd be pretty damn pi$$ed to find on my return that someone had claimed my car as their own.
Leave it alone. It isn't yours.

leave it alone.. Its probably owned and wanted, Just not being used. Ive worked with quite a few polish guys, And the ones i worked with go in and out of the country alot. They also car shared, So only one of 5 people actually drove. Even though they all owned cars. Chances are the guy or gal just doesnt need it at the mo. Plus, audi 80's come up all the time on car and classic... Just look out for a RHD one that has british plates. The polish LHD one will be a pain in the  in the long run. |
