Hi guys - useless inc...really sorry. I thought I'd replied to your points. I actually remember typing my response out - I think. Don't know what happened to it lol. I probably could repair the thread, or tap a new one, but I think you'd mb need to dismantle it to do so and its starting 1st turn of the key now and, altho its racing a little at idle, its fine for time being. There was a second hand distributor popping up on Ebay regularly. If it comes up again I'll but it. Hope the seller hasn't given up trying to sell it and binned it as I'm about to do with a bundle of Fiat Tipo parts that no-one wants. The wing repairs haven't caused me mush grief. Just been taking my time and if car hadn't been off road for fortnight would probably have finished them by now
- Shran....that is a bummer about your car but at least being something modern a bodyshop will have it looking like new in no time. Good suggestion about the fusebox. I didn't think of looking there. Car was going fine since Wednesday after I fully charged the battery but tonight the battery light started glowing again. Gonna have to get to the bottom of this

OK......back to business. Had 4 days off this week supposed to be devoted to doing the wing. - Got some work done on it Monday....shaping patch
- nothing Tuesday as car off road
- mobile again on Wednesday afternoon but only had a few hours before football kicked off so just tidied barn and free'd up a bit more workspace by moving stuff to another lock up
- Thursday spent day wallpapering my mate's partner's daughter's living room wall -why!!?
- Back to work Friday didn't get to barn till 10 o'clock which was too late to start on the wing so spent a few hours digging filler off the door of my Hillman Imp
never seen filler this deep before. wonder why it was put onSaturday finally got back to the Royale. Spent about 7 hours working on the wing and it went very well. Have basically got all the front lower section done which is the part with all the curves. after some more panel beating patch from Monday taking shape but was a bit shy in places. starting again was not an option tacked in place with a little extra piece to take up the gapanother view showing rot cut out of next area to get a patchtop part was straightforward and is also tacked in nowOn a more pleasant note I also received, from the postie today, some original Royale mudflaps c/w fitting kit which I got off Ebay for less than £10 'all in'. My wings already have mudflaps but the brackets are a bit rusty and I thought after all the work I'm doing on them it would be nice to finish them off with the new flaps. Something to aim for. OEM front mudflap kit complete with fitting instructionsLastly. I'm made some headway on the battery light problem. Drove to barn today and the guage was well in the green scale, almost in the black so it looked good. Started the car to go home tonight and red battery light glowing. Got out car and wiggled alternator wiring about. Dash light went off. Result. Got about half way home and noticed guage veering to red. Got home and sat with car idling and lights off. Guage started to return to green. Turned on side ligts. Fine. Turned headlamps on and guage started dropping to red again then it dawned on me that the battery light problem had always occured at night. Gives me something to work on anyway.

Good to see the car coming along, and that you have chosen to repair rather than replace.
I wish I could have done the same with my SD1, however it would have taken longer and meant patches everywhere.
Both outer sills replaced, inners have had new metal let into them. Still needs N/S front wing and rear wheel arch fitting, I have the parts,I have just finished the floor inside the passenger compartment which needed repair to front footwells, both rear footwells and floor reattaching to inner sills ( it had come away). Both front inner arches have needed repairs, and I have reconstructed both O/S wheel arch lips.
Interestingly, the car came with 20 years worth of old MOT certificates, but not even an advisory for corrosion. Somebody was on good terms with the MOT tester.

Cheers man Its pouring down and the car is sitting outside with bare steel and lumpy filler on so I really should get some paint on today. The underside is bare too and I'm planning on using coachpaint (enamel) there which takes a long time to dry but I'll need to get home from garage before its dry. Wish I could just drive it with no wing on

A little progress today.... got thru 3 sheets of 120 wet n dry (used dry), flatting down last night's hastily applied filler. Also got some primer on the underside. After all this work you want to put on the most rust preventative paint you can find and the million dollar question is 'which is that paint?'. I've given up trying to find a supply of what I believe is the best enamel primer ever so tried this instead. I said last night that I was worried about the drying time but the tin says only 2 hours so it shouldn't have picked up to much curse word on the way home. For the outside am using cellulose and I usually use etch primer first but have run out of my proper stuff so bought a can of UPOL at Halford.....£11

That's absolutely stunning work. I've a horrible feeling the NSU's wings are going to need a similar process; it's threads like this that keep me optimistic that it CAN be brought back to life!

Hi Richard.
Yep, they definitely can be brought back with a lot of time, a good dose of determination and a little skill.
I have a lot (too many) of projects on the go and there is no real urgency with something that is off the road but because this is my daily driver you are sort of forced into finishing or pressing on with a job.
I'm happy with the metal work on the wing but its now been replaced with hours of sanding, to get it nice and smooth before paint, despite the care I took at the metal work stage.
If its not done in another 3 or 4 sessions I may 'bite the bullet' and buy a DA sander to speed things up

Just as I'm finishing the wing work the driver's side rear wheel bearing goes this car is starting to take up all my time I wasn't too surprised as I'd been hearing some horrible noises for a week or so and some scary ones for a day or two and was also pleased that when I heard the really loud one I was only a few hundred yards from home. I was planning an 80 mile round trip the next day (with my mother and niece as passengers) so things could have been much worse. I aslo knew the passenger side one had been replaced about a month before I got the car, as there is a receipt for the job for over £300, so expected the other one would go sooner or later. I left the car for a couple of days then on the Sunday night when roads were quiet slowly drove it to the garage and left it there until today. Had a look for a bearing on Ebay and there seems to be two people selling. One in germany for £43 and one in UK for £60. The UK seller advertises it as VAUXHALL Royale 2.8 3.0 78-85 REAR WHEEL BEARING which sounds about right but advises you to give then your reg no. to check before buying, which I did and they replied to say theirs wasn't the right one which seems a bit strange as I don't think there were two different Royale rear suspension set ups. I'll probably need to go for the German one which is listed as taking 12-14 days to arrive. Anyway. I knew that its not a half hour job that you can do with a couple of 'suitably sized sockets' as the manual shows you need 6 special tools: - KM-383.....stops half shaft turning while you undo the large nut exposed when drive shift disconnected
- KM-161.....2 legged puller
- KM-376.....large protective sleeve to go on end of half shaft while you draw off the companion flange with the puller
- KM393/1.....internally/externally threaded sleeve to screw onto half shaft to enable it to be pulled back through hub once new bearing fitted
- KM-394.....some sort of threaded puller with a nut about 40mm wide on it which must connect to KM393/1 and draws everything back in
- KM-393/2.....special tool to knock over tabs of nut safety locking plate in 3rd picture
- KM-375/1, KM-373/3 & KM-375/2......mandrels for pushing out/pushing in bearing from/to carrier with hydraulic press
manual shows parts involved. 1. locking plate for nut 2. 32mm flanged nut 3. half shaft 4. companion flange 5. bearing 6. hub/carrierdrive shaft disconnected exposes 32mm nut on end of half shaft32mm nut has been off before and took hours to get off again today. locking disc next to it has had its ears damaged in the pastnut removed.next job is to draw 'companion flange' off half shaft with puller & KM-376 , if I had itI have none of the Kent Moore tools listed above and am not going to spend the next 5 or 10 years of my life searching for them. If I can get the bearing carrier out I can take it to the engineering firm who replaced the last one. They charged £65 according to the receipt to push out the old bearing and push the new one in. That dispenses with the need for the last 3 tools KM-375/1, KM-373/3 & KM-375/2. I got round the need for the first one KM-383 by undoing the half shaft nut with the car on its wheels. After disconnecting the driveshaft it took the rest of the afternoon to get the half shaft nut off. I am not in habit of using chisels etc but I just could not get enough leverage on the bar and had to resort to it and even then it was a struggle ending up using my legs etc to get enough purchase on the bar without the socket slipping off. The chisel mark actually helped as the socket became a much tighter fit on the nut after that. It seems to be a 32mm but I was beginning to think it might be a 31mm as the socket was continually sliding off. You may notice in the first pic the nut already had a couple of nicks in it. Seems strange that the bearing would have been done before. Who knows...

Thanks Coggers but I think this wheel bearing might have me beat. With the right tools it could be in and out in an hour or two and I could get back to painting the wing. As things stand I'll probably be messing around with the bearing for weeks. I suppose I can at least take the wing inside to finish it as am not using the car each day now. Its raining every day here so its been sitting with bare metal and filler for over a week just now
