Just watched it on iPlayer, cheers for the link! I'm old enough to remember watching that utterly horrific footage of Roger Williamson losing his life at Zandvoort in '73, I was eight years old at the time and can clearly remember being shocked by it, and crying myself to sleep. It was a golden era for the sport, but not always for the right reasons. A great piece of film-making though, and well worth an hour of anyone's time.

Sobering.
I think its that era that is always focused on in this respect as its when there's the combination of lots of media footage and that the drivers, in particular Stewart, fought back and started getting things changed.
Worth remembering that the risks, bravery and tragedy were there right from the early years though.

Very shocking documentary. As this is all way before my time I had no idea of the severity of the issue. I can't believe just how common death was. Incidentally, when was the last time it happened in F1? Was it Senna?
I'd always heard stories of Colin Chapman being such a hero of car design and such an innovator, I had no idea it was arguably at the cost of so many lives. No one ever seems to mention that...
Watching Roger Williamson perish like that was just horrible, absolutely horrible and to be honest, I'm not normally easily shocked or upset.

Great Topic!
I've watched a lot of similar documentaries as a car nut and F1 fan, terrifying and compelling at the same time. Makes you think about F1 now, would Schumacher have tried to put Barrichello in the wall last year if safety was what it was back then, I don't think so? Drivers take it for granted they can survive a shunt, whereas in Jackie's words there was only a 1 in 3 chance he would survive the race.
The stories of the the wet race at Spa were particularly shocking.
Jackie Stewart's work along with the other drivers who stuck with him is a big part of why Robert Kubica survived that huge shunt in Canada a couple of years ago, and with the current full tank starts it does make you wonder what could happen if there is a ruptured fuel tank.

Just watched this - absolutely incredible. The footage of Purley's desperate heroism at the end genuinely brought a tear to the eye.

David Purley also met an early demise, He was practicing areobatics off Bognor sea front when his plane went into the sea. Must have been early/mid 80's. We used to see him at it when we were kids.

Brilliant, very moving doc as everyone has said. The biggest shock to me was Jackie Stewart, fair do's to the man, an absolute pioneer! RIP all

Incidentally, when was the last time it happened in F1? Was it Senna? Fortunately, yes. 17 years and counting since a death in Formula 1, but the death of Henry Surtees just 2 years ago, for example, shows how dangerous motor sport still can be. David Purley was, quite rightly, awarded the George Medal for his actions. It's a sobering and terrifying story.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

Watched this earlier. Horrible to watch but very interesting, how people carried on racing whilst their friends were burning alive as they drove past I have no idea.
