Right, there's one of these deviant buses with orange lipstick for sale near me..
are they any good, or would I just be wasting my hard earned?
I know Headgaskets and Clutch master/slave cyls are problem areas..
Any info or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

Wicked cars. People worked out why the headgaskets were always going years ago, and its not a hard problem to sort.

lolz....literally just broken my BRM for spares. shell went to the scrapper last week. had it up for sale for 2 months with no interest. got my money back though.
IMO the overall build quality is OK but the shell prep/paint at the factory was wibblepoo, so they do rot out. hot spots are the middle of the sills and the join where they meet the floorplan, rear wheel arch seams and arch where it joins the sill. front wings where they meet the bumper get crusty. also where the rear hatch bolts to the roof rots out under the hinges. aldo get rot behind the rear bumpers near the roof drain exits. sunroof leak as the steel seams rusts, pushing the rubber seal out (goes crinkly)
handling is good. just need decent bushes to make the most of the Torsen LSD.
VVC engines make the clacking noise. they all do it, don't worry about it.
proper head gasket fix kits are from xpart and cost £170plus vat. this sorts any HG issues as long as the head is sound (ie pressure tested and skimmed etc.
rear calipers get crusty and sticky so budget for new ones. BRM front shocks are not available, so go aftermarket.

Do you still have the PG1 gearbox Clubbymatt?
I think they're excellent cars, I tried swapping a couple of times for my Astra on swapz.co.uk, but the deal usually fell through. Red interiors are lush.

Interior makes it all worth it. headgasket is no big thing. I'd be all over one if I had any use for one - like them a lot.

All of the above. That, and the wheels are fabbo, the interior bondage-tastic!

Had to google the interior as I'd never seen it. Always notice these cars on the odd time that I see one on the roads due to the orange front grille... didn't realise the wackyness continued inside!

So thats what those ones with orange grilles are called. Nice. I know people who've had rover 200s and not had any problems but then saying that my mates 25 headgasket went last month but the fact that you can pick them up so cheap now is good enough and looking at that pic that interior is awesome. ;D

If you want headgasket scary - try an early 825 V6!
The K-Series HGF isn't a biggie, just consider it a service item, especially on 1.8s.

HGF is pretty much sorted now, unless your head or block is warped, as said above. A tiny fraction of HGF on MLS headgaskets compared to nearly every standard headgasket K-series.
I love the couch style stitching pattern on everything, I'd buy one alone for that interior. It seems like one of those rare moments when Rover did something a little bit leftfield. Or probably had a surplus of red leather!

I'm in the market for cheap and reliable sub-500 quid car, has to be from a trader though so I'm sticking to Auto Trader. Plenty of 200/25/400/45's are for sale in that budget with plenty of T&T so are they worth the risk with the HG? Sorry for the hijack but I'd rather not start a new thread for a fairly modern car, and we're going doen the HGF route here anyway.

Even if the HG hasnt already been done, its not a bad job if you know what youre doing. If done properly youll have no more trouble with it. I'm always going to say that any rover is a great car and there is nothing that you will find better for the money. My p reg 420 was fully loaded with leccy everything and 135hp! Cost me £250 and I used to enjoy showing golf GTIs a clean pair of heels! IIRC the vvc engine has nearer 150hp and revs harder so should be an absolute blast.

Do you still have the PG1 gearbox Clubbymatt? Nope, box was the first thing to go. apparently being fitted to an elise running a 2.3 duratec! still have a complete BRM interior though! Matt
