thanks for the great replies, i fear we may have gone off topic slightly to a more economy biased thread... I'm after more power initially, but i don't want to sacrifice too much economy! The LPG system will give more power and more economy but after looking into it I'm not so keen, the lexus v8 is looking good though, looks like 25mph might be acheivable with sensible driving - thats better than the 25mpg i'm getting anyway as pertol is cheaper!
Need more info about the lexus v8 - can the standard ecu etc be used (and how easy is this), and can the autobox controls be used as well - would probably be easier to drop the whole engine and box in as one..?

there's no way a massive CdA with a/t tyre's and a slushbox with a 4 liter v8 are ever gonna get 25mpg. what are you getting now?

I've been looking into this more and more, and it's going to happen! The plan is to buy an LS400 as cheap as possible and use the complete engine/box and all anciliaries. I'm going to loose the 4wd - so front axle, transfer box etc etc can go, I'm never going to use it anyway and it'll give more space and less weight. I'll probably also use some other bits from the lexus too such as the dials, sound system (speakers etc) and maybe the front seats and climate control system... then i can sell on any left over bits and weigh the rest in. if i sell my good 2.5td engine too i recon it'll hardly cost anything! Then i'll be fitting LPG to get the running costs reasonable...

I've got a 1991 delica L300 td auto... The engine is pretty weak IMHO... Does anyone know if I could fit a 1994 v6 petrol audi engine in it? Thanks

Wouldn't any shogun engine fit so 3.5 petrol v6 or 2.8 tdi both would be improvement's over the 2.5 and isn't the delica all shogun running gear anyway

they are very close mechanically, as are the l200's.
2.5 was on a belt, 2.8 on a chain and gears, not sure what pumps they used exactly, a Japanese brand like nippon denso but look much like a bosch unit, they do run veg ok.
its been a very long time since i worked on them though, so I couldn't comment accurately on the space in the bay,
which generation are we talking about? most of them did get the 3.0 24v v6 like the shogun, so something compact like a single cam small block American engine may not be that silly an idea ...

we all love a v8 swap so can see the appeal, if its more power and sensible mpgs your after how about a iveco 2.3 engine, got one in my xlwb iveco daily which returns near on 30mpg in the biggest van out there so should be better than what you got. good strong engines and will haul 3.5t over 85 mph for ever on the motor way and isnt to bad on accerleration either. downside is that its quite a tall engine so may not fit very easily in the l300.

Put the Shogun or L200 V6 petrol in and LPG it! I have had both a LWB Paj 2.5TD auto and a LWB Shogun V6 petrol auto and the difference in fuel consumption was about 1 mpg! But the difference in performance was huge. Then add the LPG kit to get an effective inprovement in miles per £! Yes you'll be spending money to achieve it but the benefits are not only fuel cost related and you get to keep the car you like!

I've had my mitsubishi delica (l300) for a few months now and i love it apart from one thing - the engine. It's a good, reliable and pretty quiet engine (2.5td auto) but its fairly slow and not particually enconomical. I'm not afraid of swapping engines and making bits so an engine swap seems like a good idea, but which engine? The requirements are more power but with the same or ideally more mpg! (30 would be great!). I don't mind if it's petrol or deisel (i prefer petrol though) and the configuation doesnt bother my 4cylinder/v6/v8. a v8 would be nice but will i get more than 25mpg? any ideas? cheers!
