Hi, I've been through this a couple of times, if you post up the dimensions of the springs you might be able to find something off-the-shelf to suit you The important size for me was the external diameter of the coil. Then you need to find either : spec of the factory springs (poundage, unloaded length) or the weight of your van, set the ride height to get the length of the spring when it's compressed, then a bit of maths to work out spring poundage and free length. Good advice from Seth retrorides.proboards.com/thread/37503/1968-hillman-minx-estate-tidying?page=3 Are the springs straight or pigtailed ends? Is the van mcpherson strut or something else? (struts give 1:1 spring ratio which make the calcs easy, other systems act as levers so multiply the spring rate = not easy) adjustable coilovers (or coilover conversion) might be cheaper/easier than custom springs Some background info that might help (hopefully) retrorides.proboards.com/thread/177578/hillman-hunter-lowered-uprated-spring?page=1&scrollTo=2306914

Even if the bike is exempt from the MOT it wouldn't be a bad idea to get one on the system, just ticks a box on the DVLA's computer. Is it already registered as 'historic' or will you need to change the taxation class? Good points well made mot's are not needed for anything manufactured pre-1960. my bike was registered March 1960 so it's a safe bet it should be mot exempt, but for now - with no proof - it will need an mot The old-style v5 is fine but it was printed before the "new" tax-exempt / historic rules were thought of, so logbook still says "bike" (pay tax). Next question - how do you change to histoic/tax-exempt these days? (we had a local DVLA office last time I needed to do it ) My to-do list has suddenly grown by an mot and a tax-class discussion with DVLA many thanks folks

Thanks for the info everyone In no paricular order : ax : noted, thanks dodgerover : it's the old V5 (not the new red one) s1105117 : will do, but not yet Maybe swap for the tale behind your username carledo : sounds promising All others : the info is much appreciated I should have mentioned, the bike is pre-1960 so is mot exempt It sounds like the quickest/easist option is just insure it, take old V5 and insurance to the poist office and see what happens Will let you know (sometime next week if things go according to plan - they normally don't! )

Does anyone have any recent info about taxing a vehicle that has been parked up since the 90s? The vehicle in question is an older motorbike, original V5 (not V5C) is here in my name (owned by me for lots of years), bought before SORN so has never been SORN'd , etc. I know that DVLA rules change occasionally (and there have been rumours that the way staff do things is not always 100% consitant). It would be nice to know what to expect as I'm looking at using it for the Summer. Links or facts from personal experience would be best, tales from a bloke at the bus-stop/pub are not so reliable joeforamerica.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/10509600_10152571807334669_420488992343864099_n-728x546.jpg

Hi, Fords of the same age had 2 options : remove the blankinig plug on the side of the gearbox and fit a reversing light switch (it goes live when you put the lever into reverse) or fit a manual switch on the dash (if going manual - make sure you fit a warning lamp on the dash so you don't leave it on when driving ) Either way, make sure the light turns out when you turn the engine off, to save a flat battery Does yours have a blanking plug that you can swap for a reverse light switch?

Doing some work on a Citroen BX (one of those car that had a hi-normal-low height adjuster for the driver to play with) many years ago ... The car was on a mates drive with suspension locked on "High" so I could do some work on the front end, I reversed it onto the road for a 3-point turn to put it on his drive again and work on the back end. Lesson learned - these do NOT like to bounce down kerbs when suspension is locked "High" We also learned it was a quick job to replace a burst hyraulic line on the suspension, once you found a local dealer with one in stock Oops!

I've seen custom springs somewhere made to whatever rate you want for about £28 each. I've just won a set of rear leafs for Hillman James's old whip. Can't wait to see the difference old ones are absolutely level when viewed! If that's for front coil springs, any idea who was selling? Any plans for a build thread? Link pls ps. That could explain why he didn't reply to my last pm - wanna buy a spare set of doors / quad lights etc? See my latest for-sale ad I found out you could get different number of leaves on Hunter springs for Saloon/Estate/Heavy-Duty (maybe 3/4/5 leaves)? For anyone else thinking of Hunter rear leaf springs, these might be interesting retrorides.proboards.com/thread/187313/leaf-springs and retrorides.proboards.com/thread/169274/spring-dimensions-cheap-north-source

Bumping this for any new readers / new ideas (I'd like to get something sorted in the next couple of weeks before things get hectic here) Does anyone know where I can get uprated Capri front springs (300lb would be ideal, best I can find is 220lb from Rally Design which are not a lot stiffer than what I already have). Have been told Sierra fronts are the same diameter - does anyone have a set they could measure for me?? Super-cheap if possble so no custom made spings etc. Usual terms apply - I can offer public thanks, RR brownie points, virtual beer etc as a reward for helpful info

If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it (it's to tidy up a daily-use Retro so it's a good cause) Collection is from Morpeth NE61, about 10 miles North of Newcastle, just off A1, easy to get to from A19 & A69.

^ Nice lineup of Hillmans, good to see them out and getting used I rang Speedy Spares last year for a new front crank oil seal and they explained my 1725 motor has no seal. The front pulley has scroll grooves to push the oil back into the engine, the grooves fill with crud on old engines. Also - Hunters often have high back pressure (worn pistons), this blows oil past the blocked scroll grooves. I removed the oil filler cap on mine and fitted and old sock to reduce the pressure - it helped! My to-do list includes removing the front pulley to clean the scrolls, and an extra breather somewhere (timing chest or rocker cover?) to keep the pressure low. Springs - I'll try to get new ones sorted this week and let you know. cheers

^ same as rbs, I fitted a NOS oil pump onto a Cortina years ago and that blew a couple of oilfiler seals before I found the pressure bypass valve in the new oilpump was stuck. Any chance you have use oil that's too thick, or overfilled it? (not likely but I can't think what else would blow seals) Let us know when you find the answer pls

The police do a job I couldn't do and for that I'm grateful to them. Knowing some officers outside of work it's not a job your average person could do, it follows that some officers will be exceptionally good people but others won't be! The downside is that every time I've called them, I have been given the same advice : If you see anyone interfering/stealing your car, don't go out and challenge them in case you get hurt, just call the police. If I see someone inside my car, I cannot assume they broke in, maybe somebody else did and they just sat in for a rest (true story!) If I do challenge anyone, I should be prepared for them to counter-claim that they were just walking past and I threatened/attacked them. Police are underfunded/overworked/too busy. Damage to property is very low on their priorities but anything physical is considered serious (so if I say they broke my windscreen and they say I hit them when they were walking to church, guess which gets taken seriously). Score so far is Citroen AX & Hunter both vandalised "beyond economical repair" (and off the road for many weeks while I found 2nd hand spares to make them roadworthy), a very nice folding trailer-tent destroyed, a fully restored Motoguzzi 500 stolen to be burn out 1/2 mile away, a wingmirror ripped off Sierra by 2 teenagers, and recently an idiot staging a "cash-for-crash" shunt that would have written off my car. I have a strong sense of right and wrong. My experience of the court system is that it is a debating stage for legal/illegal issues, hence some very "legal but wrong" results in court. Am I bitter? Do I blame the police & society? Do I live in constant fear that some morons will vandalise something I have paid good money for, and that I will end up in jail if I try to stop them? Not a rant, just stating my experiences, have a couple of cool old cop cars and enjoy the weekend

Hi, The slotmags have Hillman/Ford 4x108 PCD studs, they should also fit Peugeot/Citroen but I think you would have to make the centerbore bigger to do that. Hi, the wheels will they fit my toyota celica 1979 TA40? Website www.wheel-size.com/size/toyota/celica/1994/ says Toyota have 5x100 PCD, so wrong number of studs, and the wrong size. Best double-check to make sure I'm looking a the right car, but it looks like they won't fit

If anyone has any front springs please do get in touch! And I have a large leak from the front crankshaft seal - although that is currently aiding in rust proofing the underside with oil so I'll keep an eye on it. Won't fail, but needs replacing. Now just trying to figure out if I prefer the headlight mesh or the euro covers.. opinions? 1. I'm hoping to fit different springs on mine in the next few weeks, the ones on there now will be spare. I also have a set of cut standard springs. 2. I hate to spoil your plans but ... ( I had similar last year and it's not what you think ) 3. Mesh! (I love the yellow on some colour schemes - not quite right on yours. Seth had some yellow covers on his a while ago?)

The following is a Public Service Announcement for all Hunter owners Not something I normally do but I just noticed seller jagboy4.2 has a NOS steel wing for sale on that auction website, see item 232258136998 , the auction still has a couple of days left. Price looks high to me but no harm in making an offer (it took me long time to find a NOS pair for mine, I ended up buying 2 from different places and paying under £100 for the pair + LOTS of time & petrol to collect) ^ Nothing to do with me, hope it helps, etc etc... ps. If anyone needs a set of matching doors let me know
