I'm with classicline (much loved by Hannah above if you look at her other posts), 2 comments : * They were good when I changed address (same area, no admin fee or extra to pay which was a nice surprise) * Not impressed when I reported a cash-for-crash scam on a dual-carrigeway, they were more concerned where I parked the car at night ( why ask unless it's to try and get out of paying?), and if I knew the road (it's a straight bit of tarmac !). I asked to be kept updated but have heard nothing. I was with Lancaster, search and you'll find my review. Was very happy to move away from them

I love the style of these, watching with interest No engine swap .. Maybe you get away with the 58 BHP engine from a later 403.....it looks the same. For info / pics / curiosity etc, I've just noticed an advert for a 403 Estate (UK, £4,500 or offers) www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1009352

I've had another chat with the seller, and I won't be buying anything I see it as a cool old car that is beyond economical repair so I value it accordingly - they see it as a very valuable classic ( and want a lot more than other sellers are asking for better examples) Not a problem, it was an experience to have a look around their "graveyard for 60s tin", shame I couldn't persuade them to part with one Many thanks for all the input and advice, we can now consider this topic closed.

That Commer would be ideal for nomad the amount of travelling he does he might as well bring the house with him Latest update : I've been in Wales for a few months and (for tonight only !) am staying at the top end of the lakes, so projects in Northumberland are not local Thanks for the thought but I've not managed to fill the Hunter to capacity, so who needs a van ? (tho' I could be tempted with a 50s/60s ish Estate or panel van)

Wales? Been there, done that - what next ? I moved to Wales early April for a sort-of-holiday, which hasn't gone according to plan ... strangers keep giving me work to do The good news is that the seaside is just a few hundred yards away, and it's a great place to relax First mistake - I was stopping at a friends place and I asked if they needed any odd jobs done around the house if I got some spare time, Oops ! Que using a jackhammer to remove faulty plaster following a leak in the roof, then a few days replastering before painting every wall and ceiling in the house. Joinery repairs to the stairs and doors / gates were done for a bit of variety. Fitting a smart "Tartan - not chequered" stair carpet was the last job inside. One other "if you get time" job was to paint the outside of the house to freshen it up. I spent a couple of weeks debating then decided to do it. Tip : painting pebbledash is not a job to undertake lightly, but the results are worth it If anyone is daft enough to think about doing something similar, it took nearly 8 x 5 litre tins of (expensive) paint, and I found a 2" paintbrush worked best I finished about 8pm on Saturday nite, and as I was tidying up (and planning to go to the pub to celebrate ), a chap waiting at the nearby bus-stop walked over for a chat. I should hear tomorrow if I've got the job of moving into his holiday cottage for a couple of months and refurbishing that Today was a relaxing day at an inpromptu BBQ at the beach (where friends-of-friends were asking if I was available to do some building work converting their annex into a holiday flat), before a quick visit to the local takeaway when I got back - to put off some decorating work for them until at least mid-August I got stopped between painting the front of the house and the gable end, and persuaded to freshen up a local community shop / cafe that had been closed for nearly a year in readiness for it being reopened. The work was mainly plastering repairs inside then painting the whole interior (including lovely but very complicated vaulted ceilings). Lots of positive feedback (and a couple of job offers) from the locals who were very keen to see the place reopened, but it took 7 long hard days + some very late finishes. All in a good cause Odd that the colour scheme of the cafe matches the car paintwork, but they looked happy together My latest plan is to have a trip back up North to get my passport out of storage in the next few days so I can book flights to Denmark asap for the Grand Prix in August. Before Denmark, I might end up at Durham or Alston but there's no gaurentees. I also had a trip to Birmingham last weekend and it looks like I'll be house sitting (+more?) there January & February I'm now trying to work out what I'm doing for the rest of the year, if anyone has any suggestions where I can go for a working holiday - please PM me

Dez - noted, thanks. I need to find out what comes with the car (reg number, plates, tax disk, old or new logbook, etc) before I can tell what's possible. Fist prioirity is to get the reg and see if it's on the computerised system. gazzab1978 technically you are right, but see reply from paulw - it's just not realistic for me to update a 1960s car to modern spec just to pass an IVA type test. Helpful stuff, thanks. That links to some other pages, including FBHVC www.fbhvc.co.uk/legislation-and-fuels/dvla-and-dvsa/ (I'm doubtful if that has beenupdated - it mentions local DVLA offices which disappeared many years ago) I'll let you know if / when I find out any more !

For anyone passing through North Wales with time to spare, I'd advise calling into some of the womble-friendly hunting grounds below : "Cambrian Clearance @ Llanbedr", satnav LL45 2LP (see photos below), 9-5, closed Sundays. Huge indoor barn, cheap or barter, lots of house clearance tat & genuine retro goodies ! Carboot sale @ Porthmadog Football Club, LL49 9PP, runs March-Oct, 7am til afternoon. Pot luck, most very cheap. The Antique Shop, Madoc Street @ Porthmadog, LL49 9NL closed Moday & Tuesdsay, 10am-5pm. Small but some interesting stuff, tools 50p in the boxes by the door, some expensive stuff & military items. Fron House Antiques, Jubilee Road, Barmouth, LL42 1EE. Olde-worlde house clearance stuff, plenty of stock but normally expensive. Rousell’s Emporium, Castle Street, Penrhyndeudraeth LL48 6AL (look for the full size giraffe outside the front door!). Interesting upcycled stuff, some ok prices. Todays haul included a joblot of engineering adjustable spanners, too cheap to leave behind. Note coin for scale !

Somewhat different to my experience of registering an old motor. I 'inherited' my estate which hadn't been on the road for well over 20 years ... Hi, thanks for the info. I *think* anything that has been registered (taxed, change of address etc) since DVLA went computerised* should be on their system so V62 might be an easy solution. The early 1960s motors I'm looking have been off the road for many years, if they have been wiped from DVLA computers (or were never there in the first place) it might be similar to the problems above ^ * A random Google find says DVLA went computerised in 1970s/80s, so there's a fair chance wrecks from the early 60s have never been on their system www.autocycle.org.uk/v765.htmlEdit : if there's no number plates / logbook / taxdisk with the car, I won't know the reg number so can't even try to use V62 I don't mind repairing the car but I'm trying to avoid taking in a project that turns out to be impossible to register. Thanks to everyone for their input

Hi folks, I was tinkering with the Hunter to fettle some issues after a 150 mile round trip Wales-Midlands, and someone stopped for a chat. Basically they like 60s motors, and mentioned they had one in the barn they were thinking of selling - was I interested? I had a trip to their farm today and was stunned They have about a dozen 60s motors, the one that caught my attention is one of my favourite 60s estates Nothing decided yet but they are going to have a think about things, the good news is that I was told any the cars *could* be for sale Advice appreciated about what is the legal minimum a barnfind car needs so I can get it registered My thinking is : No registration number = almost impossible ( but what are the options ?). Numberplate etc but no current V5 = possible but risky ? Old style V5 = not good but should be ok. New V5 = perfect. The cars were all moved to the property about 10 years ago, I'm hoping all the registrations were updated with the new address but I don't know yet. Realistically all are beyond sensible repair but since when has anyone on here taken the sensible option when buying a car Other small problems are... The cars are parked on a steep sloping garden, and the one I like was first there (so will be the most difficult to get out), any advice - or willing volunteers based around North/Mid Wales - would be great. They do have a tractor and 4WD truck which changes the removal from impossible to almost impossible I'm currently homeless, so if anyone has a spare house with space to work on a car for the next 6 months, let me know and we might be able to work something out ! As per the rules, have a link to an interesting barnfind website www.barn-finds.co.uk/2013/11/25/mk1-ford-escort-estate/ and a random pic as thanks

Improvising basics Has anyone heard the phrase "You only had 1 job to do ..." I'm finishing off a refurb of a lovely cottage in Wales, I got given the keys and told I had a free hand to pick what I did to it, as long as it was nice and fresh when I finished. I love this type of job, just fix any problems then paint everything We decided to replace all the lampshades as part of the work, and the lady of the house volunteered to get a joblot of shades when she went to the big city. The alternative would have been get them locally from one of the high street shops for £4 each but why take the easy option Today I got the shades from her and found she has bought a mismatched load of hanging LED lights, nice but useless as normal shades as they have no fittings A large roll of garden wire and 2 minutes adapting each shade, and we have a result Next question - what to do with a stack of new unwanted led lights

Hardware : Laptop Win7, large 17" screen, browser Maxthon. Sizing is different between old & new themes. Old was full screen at 125% magnification, new has extra column "Recently updated" etc so is fills the screen at 90% magnification. First impressions are not promising, the benefit of the layout changes do not make up for the much smaller text. Simplified steps for anyone (like me) who didn't find the option Head to your Profile, **edit** then click the Settings tab, part way down you should see a Forum Theme options, which you can now change from the default to "RR New Theme Test" Hope the feedback helps

Bumping this as I've just noticed the last few replies... TJM - nice work, photos are always welcome here. How did you make the curve at the end? (I guess you make the profile first then bend the end somehow?) falken256russia hello & welcome. Some other work by Tony can be found in his other threads (His BMW E12 M535i is a good place to start) forum.retro-rides.org/user/6987/activityWork from other car people is in the readers projects forum.retro-rides.org/board/12/readers-ridescammy72 - thanks for the very kind offer, shame I have an odd car so there's not a big market for parts (so making a batch isn't sensible). Top RR brownie points for the offer though !

I've been using masonary paint this week on some exterior pebble-dash house walls It's very thick so covers well, goes on quick, dries in a couple of hours. Apply with a brush or roller. £20 buys a 5 litre tin from Wilkinsons etc and should be plenty for 2 cars or 1 van. You can wash spills with water, but once dry it's waterproof. No idea how it sticks to car paint or if you can paint over it, but I'm planning to experiment if I have any paint left at then end of the job

... also selling drinks by local breweries and distillers. So we'll see how that goes. Updates are always welcome, glad to see the place is doing well. Congrats Foodstuff from local suppliers is good news, locally produced booze is even better news ! For some reason I now have an image of TV show "Moonshiners" being filmed racing up Saltburn Bank

My "holiday" in Wales isn't going according to plan (but there again - why bother making plans when past experience says they will soon get changed or ignored, hence my usual "plans are for other people" attitude ) A couple of days ago somebody stopped near us and put up a sign at the end of the carpark and drove off before we could ask who or what it was about. We walked over and found ... Lots of coffee breaks were taken for the rest of the day as we had a steady stream of nicely turned out motors passing by It turns out the back road we were on is part of this years course, and the junction right next to us is a great viewing point (the narrow-gauge railway signposted locally also sounds interesting )

Good to see the updates - love the barn I had a similar trailer and put some lightweight wire mesh in the center between the tracks (where you are removing the spare timber), it's not too heavy and very handy if you have smaller items or furniture etc on the trailer
