When i have visited France, alot of areas have free public parking especially in holiday times. The attitude seems to be "please visit and enjoy our town, and please spend your money". In this country it seems like the attitude is completely the opposite. ^ Very true. I spent most of last year touring around the South West coast, a common pattern was locals complaining that their council was putting double yellow lines everywhere and increasing the charges at the pay & display carparks. One of the several places I found that I would have loved to explore (The Blue Lagoon @ South Wales) but I refused to pay to park in the middle of nowhere so just took a photo and drove away. The nearby food & drink vendor told me the recent parking changes had killed their business and they would be closing in a few months unless things changed. I would have bought some lunch from him but had to move the car before the parking wardens gave me a ticket I'm working at the coast in Devon for a couple of months (renovations while the hotel is closed for the winter season), my boss gave me a lift to the pub at the weekend for a quiet drink. This was a Sunday afternoon in a deserted town and parking charges still apply - then folk wonder why town centres are not busy < insert random semi-relevant pics in thread >

The top cover on the relay looks like it's just held on with a "barb" at each corner, I'd be tempted to open up the failed unit - if you can find a dirty contact or loose wire fix it and keep it as a spare

North East Restoration Club (NERC) near Washington wildfowl normally have a couple of shows each year. Not something I've looked into for a couple of years but I know they're still active so maybe email them and ask what they're planning this year? Tip : they are very old school so the website isn't updated, best ring or drop in for a look around (Saturdays are busy ) nerclub.tripod.com/index.html

Businesses are moving out and alot of people don't shop anymore. The worry is that anti-car Nottingham is watching London carefully ready to adopt any crazy money-making scheme they can at the expense of the car. A mate moved to Nottingham about 10 years ago and warned all potential visitors about the over-keen speed cameras (30mph on the A610 dual carrigeway from the M1 into Notts if my memory is right) A lot of towns are loosing trade. I love Newcastle but public transport is crowded, parking is V expensive, roads are car-unfriendly. Options are public transport (purchases must be small enought to fit in my rucksack), buy locally (must have nearby free parking, I've spent too long waiting in for deliveries that don't arrive), or mail-order.

I wonder if any businesses will end up with early 70s vans, or late 70s estate cars to get around the rules. Me, me, me ! It just keeps getting better. My 70s estate has been tax & mot exempt for a while, business insurance is super-cheap, and as a bonus I now get ULEZ free Errm, thinking about it, nobody will do that, it's not worth the bother, no need to change the existing plans ...

The thing that gets me is that I never think that this is about clean air at all, it's just about raising revenue ... if clean air really is the priority, then free public transport is the way forward. 1. You cynic ! ( me too, and that was before I saw that heavily poluting taxis are going to be exempt from the London charges) 2. No need to have a breakdown - we will get you though this - just think positive thoughts... Your ring should be a tight fit on the shaft. Sliding your ring up & down on the shaft is allowed if it makes you happy, but turning the ring on the shaft is just wrong Does your shaft wobble? If you remove the rotor arm (the odd shaped bit at the top of the shaft), expect to see a 6-sided shaft, and a 6-sided hole in the center of the ring piece to match the shaft. Warning - removing the ring from the shaft and putting it back in the wrong position will wreck your ignition timing, if you remove the ring to check for cracks or damage it must go back in the same position. Maybe also check the gap between the pickup and the ring as this might also give odd results if it's too big.

Have you tried running a temporary live feed straight to the coil? ^ Do not try this if you have electronic ignition - there's a real of converting the unit to a dead unit

.... there's no guarantee at all that my own highly bodged version is still as it was intended to be. It's a common problem for old car owners (as opposed to some of the more esoteric problems mentioned in this thread), I can plead guilty to plenty of "creative" solutions in the past* * My latest involved using a length of domestic twin & earth electric cable and an unused switch on the dash marked "tail-lift" to create a manual over-ride for an electric fan. The wiring diagam has not been updated yet Skotch-locks are another give-away of modified electrics

Time to bodge improvise a solution a-la A-team?
Buy a new Facet (you think you need one anyway), put a jerry can of fuel in the passenger footwell (petrol is best, unless you have a diesel engine), run a temporary fuel line to the new fuel pump (via the passenger window is allowed), and run a couple of wires from the pump to earth & battery +ve. It's not the best solution but you can connect the new system up in a couple of minutes and it will do to get the car running and back to your house.
Things to think about : My fuel supply problem turned out to be a flake of crud partially blocking the pickup pipe inside my tank, try blowing throught the pipe backwards to check for similar blockages? If converting to an electric pump, you want it to automatically stop the event of a crash (maybe fit a modern bump sensor in the power supply?)

It is the source/type of the insualation that I need pointers for. Check your local salvage / reclamation yards, a while ago I got 100+ 2x4 sheets of 60mm foil backed celotex for £50 (ex-school ceiling tiles), less than 50p each The place below was recommended to me but I've not used them, maybe worth looking into? www.secondsandco.co.uk/

I called into Aldon Automotive www.aldonauto.co.uk/ when I was in the Midlands and picked up a new coil and fuel pump They get top marks for good service, fair (but not cheap) prices, and being ledgendary suppliers of automotive bling & performance goodies for several decades The parts are fitted now - under bonnet looks have improved but the engine still has a "flat" feel to it, I'm sure there's something simple that's holding back the rebuilt engine but I'm not sure what the problem is The good news is the new pump has slightly improved tickover oil pressure when hot - result (my theory is the old failling pump was letting neat fuel into the oil system, both thinning the oil and dragging MPG down. A petrol smell on the dipstick was a useful clue) It's always interesting exploring new places and finding out about local customs I now know Devon has surfing competitions, and have discovered they have naked ladies at the seaside even in mid winter It's not what I'm used to, but I like it In other news, the car is still chugging along happily, but a new quirk is I occasionally get a flat tyre if I park it with the balance weights at the bottom (maybe some dirt or corrosion on the rim?)
