I've just bought an old BMW from my fiancé's family following her Father's death. I've been given the documents to the car, but the back page is missing on the v5 which contains the v5c.
The front page is there to change ownership, but I need the code from the v5c to tax the car, which I don't have.
I've got a few vehicles, and I've noticed something. The code needed from the v5c is a 12 digit number. The code on the front of the v5 is 11 digit. The last 11 digits on the v5c are from the front of the v5, but with a different number at the start.
I.e. V5c. 15462847587 V5 (4)15462847587
This is exactly the same on another vehicle I own, but the 4 is replaced by a 2.
Does anyone know what this first number means? All I have to do is take the 11 digit number from the front and one extra number to make it work.

I managed to get to the garage on my lunch break yesterday for a look. It's been stood 2 months since her dad ended up in hospital. The battery was flat but it fired straight up on jump leads first turn of the key. The engine sounds spot on. I've had a good look around the car, it's not quite as nice as I was expecting, there's a few bits around the arches that need done longterm. The interior is lovely. I wasn't sure if it would have power steering but it does, which pleased me as I don't like cars without it.
I'm just sorting out the money for it and I should have it here next week.

This one was one was on eBay a little while ago, 50k ish miles and a long mot. It might give you an idea for the one you have seen. If you search on eBay and then click sold / completed items it'll show you old ones that have been listed.

I should add, what I want to do is buy the car for myself. The money from the car will go to my fiancé's brother who lives in Australia. So I want to give them a fair price for it.

I'm hoping I'll be able to have a proper look at it soon. It's locked in the garage where he used to work. My fiancé has been told in his will she has been left his 2 BMW motorbikes which are also in the garage so when we go to get them I can have a look at the car. In the meantime I'm waiting on the family getting back to me with a rough idea of what they want for the car.

My fiancé's dad has died. He has left a BMW E30 in the family. It's F reg 318 auto and it's a 2 door. I haven't seen it in person, but I've seen photos and it looks very tidy. He was a mechanic for over 40 years and he always kept his vehicles in top order so it should be a good example..
Could anyone let me know what sort of price this car is worth so the family can sell it? There's a chance I could buy it from the family which I'm considering, but I'm not sure of its value.

That looks a good car for the money. I've had a few supras and Celicas and I'm still considering one of these as my next car when my apprenticeship ends soon.
Good luck with the sale.

Just catching up with the series now, 1 was good, 2 with the army bit was terrible, where they kept failing and going back to the start was so boring to watch. 3 was a lot better, lovely roads and scenery and good cars. Four was ok with the m4 and Porsche but the eco cars bit I hardly paid attention to.
Off work today and loaded up number five while having lunch, it wasn't good either, the sports car test was ok, but the battleship game was dire, to the point where I hit fast forward,
Having seen the first five now, although there's been a few good bits, 75% of it has been really lame. I'll watch the rest each week, but I'm not excited or looking forward to it anymore. They've lost some of the magic that made it not just the best car show on TV but one of the best TV shows.

Be wary of French options. I bought a Citroen Relay, mechanically it's been pretty good, it's got the same 2.0 hdi as in the French cars. I took it from Leeds to the south coast and back and it hit an average of 40 mpg. But, it's rotting fast, it's on a 2004 reg and there's not a lot left of the sills. I think a good kick to the arches would cause them to fall to bits. I'm unsure what to do with it.

I was hoping to get the van fixed in the new year, but I've just got lucky and today I found out I have been paid out by work for all the holiday pay that I wasn't correctly paid over the last year. I can now get my van welded up and back on the road. It's only a mile to the welder and round here there is more chance of getting 6 numbers on the lottery than seeing a police car. Also it's just the outer sill that's rotting in a few places, I don't think there's anything really dangerous about it, I could be wrong though.

I believe it's valid until it either expires with age or the point it's taken for a test and fails I'm same as you tho, if it's unsafe I'd sooner sort it than drive knowing it's not safe That's the way I look at it, it won't be getting used till it's fixed. The only time it will be driven is a mile down the road to the welder I know when I get some money to fix it.

My campervan project has mot till next May. I had some welding done on the sills over the last 2 years. The last few month the rot has really got into the sills. I went along with a hammer and screw driver banging on the sills. In places it's solid, but on both sides there are some bits that fell out when I hit the screwdriver in.
Even though my camper has a good few months mot on, is it still legal to drive, or is it now unroadworthy?
As a side note I don't intend to drive it anymore till it's fixed. I'm just curious on how the laws work.

I've always fancied a p100. Most of my life I've owned a van or pickup alongside my car. My current van is starting to rot and it's turning into a bit of a money pit. I might go back to having a pickup again. Last two pickups were a ford ranger and a Mazda b2200 but a p100 would do the same job.
What is the 1.8 diesel like for motorway cruising? My ranger would sit at 70mph, but the Mazda had really low gearing, it was screaming at 55mph and it was a fight to go much faster.

Is this the one that was up at Jamie Whithams place (Crosland Moor airfield in Huddersfield)? Would have liked to have made it to this, but was working. That's the one, it was a cracking show, but there was a huge turnout which caught people out, there were quite a few complaints from people being stuck outside in queues and then not being able to show their car as the show bit was full. For a debut show I think they did an amazing job, some people are just never happy. I arrived in the afternoon, got stuck for 15 mins outside which wasn't a problem then got straight in. Tons of amazing cars and bikes to see. It's a lovely setting with amazing views wherever you looked. Hopefully they will do it again next year and there's talk of them opening more of the airfield to make more room.

I keep thinking of lowering my avant, it's proper wallowy and gives me no confidence when cornering. In comparison my other half's e36 feels like it's on rails.
