Not much has happened with the fiesta since last year but it has passed the MOT again. The bonnet is really quite rusty now and is showing the car up so I took the bonnet off yesterday to attempt the repair. I have a piece cut from a damaged bonnet that will fix 90% of the issues on my bonnet. Not sure if it can be seen in the picture but the repair piece is marked in the picture where it will be cut. I have been out on the fireblade a few times and even got photographed arriving at one meet.

I prefer a B5, I run one as my current daily (tdi 90) I have done 7k in it so far without incident. I keep an eye on fluids and the first job when I got it was removing the grommets under the battery that are the most common cause of water ingress that causes ecm problems. They are well put together and in my opinion are the high point of vw quality. I have previously had a couple of 1.8Ts in both b5 and b5.5 although the 5.5 was short lived as a lorry took me out on the motorway. All 3 I have had have been low miles at sub 90k and they are getting harder to find without big miles. A low miles one may cost more but if you were to do 10k a year my current 80k car has a potential to last alot longer that one with 180k without major work. Clutch and dmf costs are the common one that sees them broke for spares. Find one that's had a clutch kit and you could be preventing a £500 bill which is what a well used one is worth with mot. Go for it I say but buy a more expensive one is my advice like 1000-1500 should buy a decent one. Mine

I have seen that for sale on Facebook and thought to myself I had never seen a 2 door classic before. Looks a good base. As far as engines go a Ford v8 would be cool but a zetec for running costs.

Has anyone got any experience of these xj40 2.9? I have had a 3.2 x300 a few years ago but prefer the look of the xj40 but the one that is winking at me is a 2.9 which Google suggests is best avoided as are all early ones. To be fair all what I can find was written years ago when they were probably all worth £500. Is a 2.9 really underpowered? Are the common early car problems that bad? At nearly 35 years old you would think the owners have ironed out the niggles. Picture included of said car and yes it has cloth seats.

I think it was built around 2008ish. I remember seeing it at the mini showdown at Shakespeare raceway and the last time I went to that show was 2008. Not sure if it's been registered correctly or declared at at all.

Brilliant, this is already one of my favourites but with running boards and a different grille it would be perfect. Have you got a dateless plate to go on it?

I have seen you have put it up for sale. What is the car you want to buy? It must be special to sell this after the work that's gone into it.

Here is my 1993 Raleigh Kalahari limited edition that I bought new from my then local Raleigh dealer Dugmores for a massive £500 which was alot of money as a kid and most of my mates had £150 Raleigh Mustangs. 1993 was Raleigh's last attempt at a quality bike and the ones they knocked out after were substandard in comparison.

I was well into my bikes before motorbikes and cars came along when I turned 16\17. I was more into bmx's tbh having upto 10 of them at a time but I always had a mountain bike or 2 as well for the longer rides or for down the woods. I still have the last new bike I bought, its a limited edition Raleigh Kalahari which was the same spec as Raleigh Peak or Summit with no front shock option which you could order from the dealer. I wish I had kept a couple of the bmx's that I had back then, I had a DB silverstreak and a beautiful spec'd up Raleigh chrome burner which evolved over the 5 years I owned it. I have recently bought this one though a nice survivor just to look at and remember the childhood days. As said above I think I would get another frame as I wouldn't trust that again. When I was about 14 I had a Piranna bmx snap in two on me. No fun I assure you especially carrying it home in two halves.

Not looked in here since you had it painted. Much better with a zetec in rather that the diesel. The intake says its a 130bhp? Is that right? I was not aware of a mk6 being available with that spec. I always thought after mk5b the gti range and convertables top spec was 115 bhp .

This was always a favourite of mine that seems to have disappeared It was broke up and sold off years ago I read on Facebook. I liked it and it went well. Modified metro turbo engine I think it was. Not sure if it qualifies for this thread but would cutting the bulkhead out mean you need an IVA check?

That looks ace. A guy round the corner from where I grew up had an estate in that livery. It must be 20 years ago now but it was really tidy.

I’ve just done some calculations based on 150miles a week for a year. If I did it in our diesel Lupo at 55mpg it’s £862. If I did it in the falcon at 25mpg it’s £1770. So about £900 a year different. Bear in mind a lot of the 90s BMWs, Mercs,Volvos being touted here as options will only do about 30-35 mpg too... That’s not the whole story though. The falcon is significantly cheaper to insure as a sole car on a policy. Like £300 a year less. In the last year I’ve spent 3x as much keeping the Lupo on the road than the falcon. It has annoying things like cambelts that need servicing, and a lot more things to break all of which seem to cost more. And break they do. Even stuff like oil is way more expensive for the Lupo as it uses aVW specific fully synth, whereas the falcon is happy on any old mineral oil you Chuck in as it all well exceeds the specs of 1960s oil. On balance, with all things considered it’s probably about 500 quid a year more to daily the falcon than the Lupo. Is the experience of daily driving a 1960s American car over a 2000s eurobox worth that amount? Most definitely. Well I do 300 miles a week minimum so let's say I would put £3500 a year in your Falcon in fuel. My passat is using about £40 a week so that's about £2000. Not sure maintenance costs would be vastly different, the Passat has only done 87k and upto yet since rectifying what was wrong with it when I bought it I have not spent anything. It a reliable thing and drives well slowly. So £1500 extra in fuel is an extra £29 a week. It's only £10 a week more than I was putting in the scirocco. Where do I find a sensible priced 6cyl mustang?

Well some time ago now I managed to finish getting all the paint off the engine bay and work stopped due to house improvements that the Mrs wanted doing and being winter I wanted the fiesta back in the garage out of the worst of the weather. So with 3 cars wedged back in the garage I had no room to work on any of them again. I was originally going to extend the garage out 6ft at the front so it would be level with the front of the house which would ease the garage size problem but still with 3 cars and a motorbike in there it wouldn't be ideal. I also have the problem that if I was to paint something in the garage for example it can be smelt in the house which neither the Mrs or kids are keen on. So I hatched a plan to build a workshop in the back garden behind the garage not connected and my plan is to keep it under 2.5m high to not go outside of permitted development rights. So the first issue is I cannot get a car into the garden. This is the back of the garage. But I could not cut a hole for a door until I had one. So I enquired about a roller door and I got a price of £420 supply only. Not bad but I am going to need another for the workshop and that's £840 before I have started. I didn't really fancy that kind of outlay and if I am honest I am a bit tight, I do enjoy doing things right/the way I want it done as cheap as possible. So I found an electric garage door on ebay, 5 years old fully working with remote etc. The measurements were usable, 6 inches wider would have been better but I thought it was a bargain and was the winning bidder at £20. Well pleased with myself about this first step to my workshop, I just needed to go to the guys house, remove the door from his garage and transport it the 80 miles back to my house. Me and my brother set off one Saturday morning and a couple of hours later we were ready for the return journey. It was not my favourite drive home with the door on the roof and it was little wider than the mirrors of the car by a couple of inches each side. Not sure how legal that makes it but it's not as wide as towing a caravan. The height of the door with frame was 2050mm I think from memory. The rachet straps were making the most horrendous noise in the wind at anything above 40mph. So most of the journey back was on A roads at 40mph rather than the motorway. So back home I was really happy. Now we need a suitable hole to fit the door to. There was no lintel above the old window and there were 3 or 4 joists above the window. Perfect and works a treat on the button. With buying the door and a pair of acro props, bricks, sand and cement etc I came in at just under £200 and to be fair the acro's would sell on for my money back but I will hold onto them for a while yet. So my workshop will be approximately 18x10 so a generous single garage size and the existing slabs needed removing from that area. I wish things really happened as quickly as this post suggests. This is nearly up to date, I have started digging a trench round the perimeter of the soon to be base to fill with concrete and I plan on going up 2 rows of bricks up then dig all the middle area out and fill that with hardcore then concrete. You get the idea. I am going to make the frame work out of timber hence the couple of bricks high so it is not sitting in water and going rotten. At the old house me and a mate did my workshop there but the base was easy as it was solid concrete ground to start with but that workshop came out OK. That one was 16x8 and obviously never made to get a car in.

If only I could get the fuel at 1980s prices I could justify 20 mpg.

Dez you have me hooked. I do about 3-400 miles a week though and the fuel bill is a concern. I parked my 2.0 tsi scirocco on the drive and bought a 1.9tdi passat because I was sick of putting fuel in the scirocco. I would love to run an old 6cyl mustang everyday though.

I don't think you can beat a MkIII Cavalier, they are simple and easy to maintain, have mod cons like good heaters, PAS electric windows, EFI and much more. Even A/C on the top CDX and V6 cars. You can choose an early model for simplicity, no cat or ABS but stil have the essentials or pick a later car which has both. Reliability is outstanding, parts are still fairly easy to get and not expensive and on my preferred 2.0 model, fuel economy is very good for a car of it's size. Up to 40mpg on a run for my 2.0 16v GLS auto. Prices for the more exotic models, Turbos, GSis SRis and 4x4s are already beginning to head for the stratosphere but you can still get a Tidy GL or GLS 2.0 for a grand or thereabouts. This one I bought for SWMBO to use as her daily, I only got it back when her spine deteriorated to the point where she had difficulty getting in and out and I bought her a Picasso. I've had it since 2006 and its been faultless. I've not used it since 2017 and it's not quite so pretty now, but still starts on the button (it actually HAS a button!)will be for sale in the next week or two. I just don't have time to put it to rights, there are too many cars (6 at the last count) ahead of it in the queue! Steve PS, I also have a prefacelift 2.0 8v auto saloon without cat or ABS to sell too! I was a taxi driver once upon a time and we had a couple of 2.0 8v cavaliers that were truly dependable and were still running fine with 300k on clock. I bought a 1.8LS 11\12 years ago for the Mrs to drive and neither of us liked it and I sold it, at the time I was taxi driving a mondeo mk3 and the cavalier felt old in comparison. In fact I replaced the cavalier with a mondeo st24 on lpg which we kept for 12 months or so.

Another one from the 90s that appeared to be well built on appearance at the time. I did see it in the metal back then. Years later someone told me it was sitting rotting and was not well built but at the time I questioned in my head if the guy was talking about the same car. The extensive body mods were never my thing but there are plenty of feature cars and concours cars I wouldn't mind seeing now to see how well they have lasted.

Another one I remember from the late 90s, it was running an escort rs turbo engine in the back and was always the fastest mini at the Shakespeare show. Picture found on Google.

I took this pic in 99/00 at a guess. The car was at lots of mini shows for a couple of years. It looked well built.
