I fitted the head and new head gasket back on my car, refitted all the ancilliaries, and had no spare nuts or bolts left!
It then fired up first turn of the key and settled to a smooth idle. Result.

Nothing since last Christmas?
Is this still around or has the project been shelved?

never had the pleasure of driving a rocco but arnt the brakes pretty big golf lumps with a servo? All Scirocco's have (small IMO) 239mm (I think) front discs with rear drums. They're servo'd but the servo and master cylinder is on the near side where you'd expect it for left hand drive. The master cylinder can't be located on the OS for right hand drive as there isn't the room. Now, when the car was brand new back in the day, you'd have thought that the brakes were merely average. Now that the youngest Scirocco's are 17 and the oldest must be getting on for 35, and there's a load of slop in the linkage, the brakes are usually curse word. The servo is pretty marginal on them too. I've put 253mm front discs on mine from a late mk2 16v Golf gripped by old Audi Coupe calipers. This was a big improvements. As was braided hoses, making sure the rears were well adjusted and the linkage is in good order. One day, I'd like to put a proper pedal box in with the master cylinder attached and do away with the servo. A Scirocco is barely 900kgs and IMO, therefore doesn't need a servo. Mine was an early CL model with smaller non vented discs and smaller calipers. What with that, the infamous linkage that saps away braking efficiency, and the fact the driver ran a give way sign and hit someone head on, it was always going to end in tears!

My old Scirocco - a year long saga of welding and spannering got it a fresh MOT, I got bored and put it up for sale. Looked like this shortly before I sold it: The new owner had it 6 days, and proceeded to rearrange the front with a Honda Civic:

A mate of mine had a Mk2 Fiesta 1100 Popular as his first car (back in about 98) and he wrote that off and replaced it with a Fiesta 1100 'L'.
The 'L' was one group higher in insurance, and the only difference we could see between the two cars was a dealer fit sunroof and a rear wiper!

Lytham St Annes is right next to Blackpool. ;D
It's a 1.8 8 valve head off a Mk3 Golf so it wouldn't fit, but thanks for the kind offer

I've already got my birthday money earmarked for a new torque wrench and whats left will go towards a set of coilovers, and I'm reluctant to fork out for an unknown secondhand head, so I think I'll go down the sharpening stone/quikmetal route.
I've mentally prepared myself to reassemble it all and for it to go again within a week, so I won't be too upset if/when it happens!

Cheers for the replies guys. As this is a budget smoker I think I'll take the easy way out. If it blows (which knowing my current run of form it undoubtedly will) then I'll bite the bullet and strip it down and have it skimmed.
I dug out my tube of chemical metal, and the instructions sheet says it'll only stand temps up to a maximum 160 degrees C, and constant around 100. As it'll be getting a good bit hotter than that I'll need something similar with better heat resistance. I've found some stuff called 'Quiksteel' which looks like it'll fit the bill nicely. I'll have a look for some next week, as it's my birthday I'm unlikely to get to the motor factors today!

I picked up a Golf recently with suspected HG failure, with a view to fixing it up and pressing it into use as a cheap daily. I've removed the head this evening, and the head gasket has definitely had it, and it seems to have damaged the head with it. Number 3 piston has blown out into a water gallery, and the break seems to have eroded the alloy of the head where the gases have escaped. I'll let the pics do the talking: The gouge is less than than 1mm deep, but it's right where the metal portion of the HG sits, so I'm guessing with a new gasket this will blow again pretty much immediately. So bearing in mind this is a short term, dirt cheap smoker, my dilemma is this: Do I put a skim of chemical metal in there and whack the head back on, or do I strip the head and have it professionally skimmed? Would chemical metal hold? Also does anyone have a ballpark idea on how much an engineer would charge to skim a head? Cheers - Tom.

Man oh man, those first welds are nothing to be ashamed of! I recall mine were like a scene from attack of the killer pigeons.... I thought you'd have tacked a few of the curly wrought bits on there for a bit of decoration though

This is a lovely old thing. If I weren't such a wuss I'd consider one of these as a daily. I still think one of these would make an excellent security device (OK that is a cougar - not a Jaguar but you get the idea!)

I'd agree with the above. I've signed numerous petitions on the above site, and all have been answered by some meaningless guff statement from some minister or another, and pursued no further. I'd say there's a better chance of my nan leaping out of her chair and doing the macarena than the rolling 25 years being reinstated.
I'm just resigned to the fact that old cars can be an expensive hobby, and there are some things that you just have to pay for.
Sorry to sound defeatist...

That looks like a really tidy example! Rust protection is a good idea, particularly if it's getting used through the winter.
