Awesome find that! Seeing as it's such a rare care ( never even heard of one before now) I'd be very wary of modding. Jag sixpot and autobox sounds lovely and with the exterior looking factory no one needs to know!
But, your ride your way ;D

Wow!! Some truly innovative people out there!! Love the lads on the OAP scooters! And the Landy looks class Grunty!
How about unicycles? Or a throne-like chair in the back of a dumper truck? Or ala Mr Bean,on an old sofa on the roof of a battered old Mini? Sky's the limit ;D

Pulled the Mini off the road to change both subframes, steering rack,,the engine and the passenger side rear wing. Took nearly a month and a half, working from 9 to 11pm after coming home from work at about 7.30pm. All finished finally.First drive on the "new" engine. No power, changing gear is like stirring gravel, the steering feels vague and it handles like a suet pudding and to top it all off the HG blew on the way home.Pulled the "new" engine and subframe in 3 and 1/2 hours on a Friday night, had the old ones in by Sunday noon ( had to muck about swapping bottom arms, hubs and tierods due to new balljoints/bushes.) Drove to work on Monday morning. Arrived in a cloud of smoke with a wandering steering and innumerable squeaks and bangs.
Stuck the damn thing in the garage and haven't looked at it in a month. Sick of wasting time and money on what will always be a flakking heap. Tomorrow I'm gonna give it a last try. If it plays up,even slightly, I'll SORN it and resign myself to trundling down the inside lane on the dual carriageway, towing a black cloud at 30mph. Always gotten where I was going though, even if I was late.
Sorry this turned into a rant. Not meant to be

I'm not the slightest bit jealous MMate! Lovely unit.Nothing better than having everything all in one place and all to hand. I have 7 cars and tons of spares spread over three garages and the spare room in the house!
And that's a beautiful Triumph your mate's got. What model of Triumph is that based on?( so I can copy paste into Ebay's search right now ;D)

Norm as far as I know these where made on 8v heads. HOWEVER this is just what I've heard from a couple sources.Reliable so far. The 7.8s Cossie YB,I witnessed that run personally.
The Maltese aren't big on t'interweb so I doubt you'll find any engine build up sites. However lots of the drag Pintos are built by a man nicknamed Il Mantij (Il is the in maltese and the nickname is pronounced Munteee). I've been told he's Australian-born and he's reputed to be a rich man,yet his appearance would lead you to believe otherwise.
Anglia, some of the Maltese bike riders ( Simon Giordimaina for sure) have raced at Shakey and the Maksar drag truck set a European record at Santa pod I think.
However I'll say it again, most of the ETs are just what I heard, and you know what a drag racing grapevine is like. Having said that, everyone over on the OSF forum seems to be full of praise for the Maltese boys,so.
Hoping to be there in August to see for myself. Will report back my findings.

No help on Merc specific bits from me mate. Just some encouragement. Take it easy, follow the instructions and when it all gets a bit too much go inside for a cuppa/sedative as needed!;D
Good luck and congrats for having the guts to do it yourself!

Cheers for the info B&D Norm,(if ya don't mind first name terms mate, but it feels funny to be havin a discussion with someone called Team Blitz ;D) not in any way denying that autoboxes are probably the best thing for racing,it's just I prefer 3 pedals. And the Escort is a dedicated drag racer, cos it's got no reg documents and has been extensively lightened and roll caged and there is no way it's ever venturing on the road. However I'm not looking to compete seriously in the sport. Just a bitta fun.
And B&D,you're right mate. There's some awesome metal being fired up the dragstrip here. Amongst which the European record holding drag truck with a low 10s pass at santa pod,a spaceframed MK1 Escort with a YB Cossie which does 7.8s and an all steel all glass Mk1 Escort with a 2.1l Pinto which has made an 11.1 pass. As well as a couple of Mk1 Escorts ( they're big on Mk1s here, can you tell) doing low 10s passes on 2.1 Pintos with no nitrous, turbo or supercharger.

No chance of an auto mate. I don't wanna win any trophies or money,I just wanna have some fun on a Sunday. That's all. Besides,I like the "involvedness" of driving you get with a manual. By the way the Escort is currently not going anywhere fast, as it's engine is on a pallet beside it.
Bet it costs hell to ship a great big transmission half way round the world though!darn ;D

The best answer there,Frink.
But when I drive the Mini I still get a kick outta seeing people faces at the noise/smoke/silly stickers and stripes. When I'm caning it down a busy street everyone turns to look and it makes me grin. Still apologise for it sometimes though

So as you know I own a Mk1 Escort drag racer,which I'm v e r y slowly collecting bits for,including the engine, a 2L Pinto.
Anyway I was having a discussion with a mate of mine(long time mechanic who also drag races a Mk1 with a 2L) about flywheels. Now every piece of text about flywheels in performance engines I have ever read has stated categorically that a lightened flywheel will improve acceleration of the engine, due to less weight to accelerate etc. However my mate insists that a lightened flywheel is no good in a drag engine,as the engine will bog down when the clutch is dumped during a holeshot.
What do you lads think? I did once read something about heavy flywheels not being a bad idea on race bikes because they help cornering but that has nothing to do with this.
Any info much appreciated.
Tom
