Oh brakes my worst nightmare, as a youth I could always rely on my Dads help fixing my old cars.
My daily at the time was a 1961 Rover 100, I had a piston that had seized in the front calliper. My dad was bed ridden at the time but he gave me instructions as I fitted a service kit and rubbed a few rust spots out of the offending piston. After I had taken the offending piston upstairs for inspection I was told to refit it, bleed the brakes and job done.
All went well apart from the rubber olive ring between the piston and calliper not wanting to play ball but after fiddling around for a while I got it in. Bled the brakes and went to our local test track a 2 mile bypass with a roundabout at each end.
All went well and until near the end of bypass I applied the brakes and no longer did I have a reassuring firm pedal. The pedal hit the floor and I wasn't slowing down. I managed to scrub enough speed using the handbrake and gears, screeching round the roundabout and coming to a graceful stop on the verge.
In my frustration with the rubber seal I had used a pair of scissors and cut it in half, fitted really easily that way. Obviously I now know why my brakes didnt work, but explaining this to my dad cheered him up no end.
I left the new engine for the same car with the head removed on the drive as I went in for a tea break. I came back to find my younger brother filling the cylinders with sand, he wanted to make six castles all at the same time!!!
This also amused my Dad no end!

Next onto my favourite period of Volkswagen modding , the Back to 89 stuff . The targa topped Ghia originally built by Brett Hawksbee had recently been refreshed and was still jaw dropping ... I remember being a rather impressionable teen with a dog of a 1303s, wishing it looked as good as that. One of the few cars I think would instantly recognise from the time I read Volksworld.

Being the warmest day of the year so far. I swapped my racks. And thought I'd head out to the mountainous regions of Norfolk. Got as far as Tesco realised there's curse word all hills let alone mountains in Norfolk. Picked up some flowers for Mothers Day and tootled off home.

Meeting my brothers in the city today, that will be a 996, Golf GTD, Mini Cooper and my filthy french tart. So I do what every self respecting person does clean the car, just not that one. That's more like it.

Can't fault my daily soft top, I can push it up to 50mpg, cheap as chips to buy! Just had the front tyres changed for less than £100, I could of got a few more miles out of them but 40k is acceptable. You just need to like big arses,

Ford Streetka has no outside release for the boot it either opens remotely from key or from the lock which is between the seats in lockable box.
Putting my laptop and a couple of files in the boot I put the keys down. Closed the boot lid and realised keys are in the boot. Car is unlocked roof down, but no way of getting in boot.
Weighing up my options spare key is at home 90 miles away, none of the lads in the factory I was visiting would admit to being able to break in. They already took the curse word outa me for the Streetka, the fact I'd locked my keys in the boot made it even better.
This is when I had my eureka moment, I had only one key when I got the car and had a new one done at Timpsons. When they did this they gave me a card with a code. Supposedly with this code Timpsons could cut me another key. Hunted through the curse word in the car and found the receipt and card. Cadged a lift to local branch £5 on key, with no chip.
Amazingly key worked and unlocked box then unlocked boot. I kept that key hidden in the car after that, no immobiliser chip so wouldn't start the car, must have used it three or four times. I never learn.

My Feb 01 Parkers Price guide lists a 94 Maxima 3.0 SE V6 with a new price of 21,625, you would expect to pay £2,695 for an A1 condition in Feb 01.
Last year we bought the Parkers price guide to do P11ds at work so I keep in in my office library for prosperity.

Fitted the spacers and longer bolts, and its close but I have wheels that go round! Took my youngest to football and had no issues. Fifth gear with the ski pole gear knob may been adjustment.

My daily cost me £1,400 and another £900 in maintenance and servicing it it just ticked past 66,000 miles at the weekend. That's 31,000 miles in 20 months and I average 44mpg with ease.
The Audi A5 it's parked up next to today has had more spent on tyres over the same period covering slightly less miles, than all my maintenance costs.
If I can eck out another year from it I'll be well chuffed.
I'd rather spend my money some old price of tat that may only work 3 weeks outa 52, that you spend ages trying to find a stupid part or in my case more tat to put on it. Thats what I enjoy, to be honest is a 1991 Polo saloon, lowered 60mm with a 1.4 engine, dressed up as a pastiche of 1970's ski team wagon going to be financially rewarding? I can answer that myself "nope".
Will it be a better car than something far newer I could pick up for the money I have spent. I very much doubt it.
I'm enjoying doing it and when it all goes pear shaped and it looks wibblepoo and the engine pops. It doesn't matter really, I can go on to my next stupid plan. All it's cost me is the same as those tyres the A5 has used in the last 29,000 miles.

A 1.3 throttle body is what you want. Yeah but I had the 1.4 one wanted to see if it could work, sensor plug is different any way so idea is scrapped. At the moment going to fit it all in with a the 1.0 bits, and go from there. Get it running and then looking a swapping throttle and ecu. Can you remember if 1.3 ecu was a straight swap?

Failed again, but haven't seen another Polo saloon since getting mine. I thought I'd check, the stats for mine. In 1994 there 40,471 Polo CL's that's just Breadvans and saloons (I think). Coupes were separate with 23,287. Let's jump forward to now 701 CL's left of breadvan, saloon variety and 588 coupes. Narrowing down a bit more 225 CL breadvans and saloons left from 1991 compared to 171 coupes. That's a spectacular fall from grace, but nothing compared to the Fiesta Bonus 47k to 158 or the Metro City 116k to 103

I appears to have been snapped up and at that price I'm not surprised, i'll have to keep my eye out for it on the road around me. Ah well - thanks for checking anyway. Very kind of you. There's a silver 93 Astra mk3 saloon on auto trader for similar money

Well that explains it, really long cable that loops across the rocker, Polo is just a short cable through bulkhead.

Do you do anything else other than heat the bumper up?
That looks really good, my Polo has grey bumpers that need sorting.

Pleae clip your dogs nails.... I have learnt over the last two years with Sam you need broad shoulders. He has his nails clipped every 4 weeks. Unfortunately they are naturally long and I'd rather not cut into the quick like some owners. I have been accused of neglecting him because he has a bald patch on his tail, for this he has his glands cleared every 8 weeks. Been told whilst out I'm neglecting him as he's underfed, actually he's overweight and getting a natural scavenger to diet is a pain. He has even learnt how to flick the handle on the food waste bin, so it's unlocked then uses his nose to open the lid. We don't use the food waste bin anymore. Also told constantly he has a lump on his front quarter, yep I know have been reassured by the vet, it's nothing to worry about but I had a biopsy done on it anyway. Just a fatty lump and being between 11 and 12 he will get them. Finally i don't walk him to the shops anymore after my 10 year old got grief whilst I was in the shop and he was accused of letting Sam get to cold. He's highly strung and shakes constantly if I leave him. Whippets are great but sometimes misunderstood. Back to cars. Looking at the throttle body on the ABD engine the butterfly opens clockwise, on the Polo anti clockwise anyone got a picture of the cable linkage on an ABD engine. Edit... I'm confusing myself now which one goes which way but they are different. Thermostat housing definitely needs to be swapped Polo has two sensor plugs, one going to engine control unit, other to temperature gauge. ABD only has one going to engine control. Crank Pully definitely different, engine mounts need to be swapped. Think I'm nearly ready to transplant apart from gaskets and an exhaust to connect to a manifold which I need to check will actually fit.
