Mike any chance of a contact number? i'm very tempted by this - going to have a look round locally first to see if there is anything about, but if not i might give you a call tomorrow and arrange to have a look if your about.
Thanks Gavin

A question about v8's....GavinJ

I've done a v8 conversion on my 1978 MGB GT and i'm suprised at how much it rocks the car when the engine is revved? I have taken a video on my phone and you can see it moving,
Is this the normal effect of a v8? any ideas how I can reduce this, stiffer front springs? engine steady bar?

As i've got the week of work i decided i'd get stuck into my MGB v8 conversion that i've left untouched for about 6 months even though its almost finished mainly due to other things cropping up... So last Friday i towed it from my rented garage to my house chucked the battery on charge ready for a week of fettling.... This morning i was quite nervous about starting it after it being stood for such a long time as i had big problems with the oil pump un-priming itself after it has been sat for just a day or so, but i ended up changing the front timing case as it was worn and this seemed to do the trick prior to it going in my garage 6 months ago... So I took the ignition lead off and turned it over a few times just to get some oil around the engine and then popped the ignition lead back on, crossed my fingers and turned the key and to my relief i didn't hear any dreaded 'death rumble' from the v8 due to no oil pressure and it started after a few dabs off the 'go' pedal and sounded spot on had really good oil pressure ;D I'd forgot how good a v8 sounds even with a single exhaust system ;D haha can't stop smiling at the moment Although i've just had to come out the garage as i've got a bad head which is probably from all the exhaust fumes filling the garage but i did take a vid on my mobile before i left Today has been a good day.....

Here's my recent purchase, It's an 8v gti that has had all new GL trim fitted by the previous owner at a cost of £800 from VW!! so got the nice chrome strips on the bumpers and stuff all i've done is hit it with the lowering stick and I don't think i'm going to change anything else...

Just to add some more retro content to thread this how my mg's soundings as of now, (ignore the ticking noise it's not the engine, just the fuel pump working away as there was hardly any petrol in it!!)
Hoepfully will on the road by the retro rides show, as selling the Astra has free'd up some cash to get it mot'd and insured - just need to refit all the centre console, finish fitting the bucket seats, fit the speedo cable and all done!

Since i've had it i've also had to 'explain myself' at work as to why i've sold my nice new car and got an old car thats apparently going to be unreliable - they just don't get it do they? The plates look good but are also proving to be a nightmare aswell - sick to death of people saying 'how come it's not left hand drive if it's an import?' 'do you know those plates are illegal?' and the strangest one was today 'you want to get that car checked out, because i've read stories that cars with dodgy plates could of been used in a bank robbery?' WTF? But there staying on!!

Cheers guys, i actually find myself going out for pointless drives in it and i get a satisfying grin on my face everytime the splitter catches on a speed hump ;D does that sound weird? lol Had a brain wave the other night, when i was thinking of the good old days of trackdays in the MGB and the fact i have not done one for 12 months - since its been off the road, so i thought why not use the newly purchased Golf? So it's all booked, 4th June Donington, open pitlane but i think i'll have to remove the splitter as i don't think it will survive if i leave it on!! Will be a bit different taking a fwd car round Donington so will be a nice new experience.... Also means i have a suitable retro for the retro rides show if the mg isn't on the road by then

and my god it feels good!! ;D I've had a break from a retro ride for the last 12 months, whilst my MGB is undergoing a v8 conversion and I sold my e30 BMW and bought a 2002 Astra SRI Turbo....but I sold it last week as I decided a new car simply wasn't me.... Don't get me wrong it was very quick, comfortable and reliable but I got bored of it, always paranoid of where I parked it, high service costs, high tax, high insurance etc.... So up it went for sale and sold very quickly and I needed a replacement car but it had to be a retro ride...... Now I considered all sorts even diesels, as I cover quite a lot of business miles but I had 1 weekend to get something and I ended up with this..... A 1988 8v GTI with 102k ;D and i've already hit it with the lowering stick So i'm back and i'm hoping the new ride gets approval!!

My '78 MGB V8 conversion is currently testing my patience... It's all finished apart from the final 'easy' jobs or so I thought, todays plan was to get it all ready for the MOT.... All thats left to do is, *Modify the speedo cable and get the speedo working... *Wire up the reverse lights *Fit the centre console So I attempted the speedo cable this morning I had modified the new cable to fit, only to find I had modified the wrong end not realising the one end is slightly smaller than the other.....so there was a 50/50 chance of me doing it wrong and I did it wrong.... So thats the end of that until another new speedo cable arrives in the post.... Then I went to wire up the reverse lights to find one wire missing off the switch so thats the end of that until I find find my soldering iron and find suitable wire and connector. Then I thought I may aswell trial fit the modified centre console as i've had to alter the position of the gear lever and did it fit? nope so I now need to spend some more time fettling with it. So a whole morning and nothing was achieved.. I did however get it started for the first time this year and it made me realise it was going to be all worth while in the end! Here's a short vid of how its sounding and if your wondering what the ticking noise is, it's just the fuel pump working away as there is hardly any petrol in it!! I'm well chuffed with how its sounding, considering it only a single exhaust system as I was afraid I was going to lose some of the V8 sound....

Fair enough its not the ideal solution, but solved my problem for less than 2 quid and i can now get it mot'd and get on some trackdays!

Now I think I have found the real purpose of roasting tins.... Take one MGB and fit a v8 with a weber carb and then have an issue with the bonnet clearance. Now I had a problem that I had to solve cheaply and as easily as possible, as the carb set up is only going to be on the car for approx 12 months until I can afford the 4 barrel edelbrock carb I want along with a more appropriate inlet manfiold so clearance will no longer be an issue and it will fit under a standard bonnet. So I was walking round Asda and I spotted a roasting tin and not only with imagination did it look like a bonnet bulge but also looked the perfect size, so £1.89 later I now had a 'bonnet bulge' So I got home and did a trial fit and low and behold it was the perfect size for the air box set up we had made, so I set out about fitting it... So there you have it, the 'proper' purpose of a roasting tin resulting in a temporary bonnet bulge for £1.89

I might be interested in those springs mate if no-one else is. I've always thought there has been a complete lack of customised MG's about as they have huge potential imo, sure you get plenty with different engine conversions and the odd sebring looker but where are all the custom body mod's? Mines looking a bit odd at the moment following the v8 conversion although i'm kinda liking the look in a weird kind of way. Just need to get the thing mot'd once funds allow and start enjoying the v8 power! Bonnet is a temporary thing just to house the weber carb i've currently got fitted, until i can afford an edelbrock carb and manifold.. it also sit's lower at the front than in the pic as it's on an axle stand...
