So I've just taken purchase of this. I first got offered this van as a swap for my Sierra. The deal never came off due to lack of time and I kicked myself for missing out on it. Fast forward a few months and the original guy who offered me the swap made me aware that the current owner wanted rid of it. This time I wasn't going to miss out! I shot up toTelford and bought it. I'm really pleased with it, got loads of plans for it but firstly to recommission it. It's not the first time this van has appeared on RetroRides either. Some Googling by me found this! retrorides.proboards.com/thread/178174/1987-austin-maestro-bristol-reducedBy now you'll some of you will know my formula; Lowering + Banded steels + Attention to detail = End Product I'm seriously thinking of putting this back to a BT van as it was to begin with. Look forward to reading your comments. Many thanks

darrenh - Thanks buddy, I am really pleased with how it has turned out. Been a great little conversion to complete. A little fettling here and there which is always fun. Time for an update on this, my PTFE/Teflon braided fuel line finally arrived to replace my empty stores. Therefore I decided to fit the fuel line on and see if the old girl would fire in to life. First up I cut a length of hose off just over a metre in length. Then I had to route it from the fuel pump to the Weber. You may remember from previous updates the engine had a formed metal fuel line running from the pump directly to the old Varajet. I had to route the braided line sensibly as there was a lot of tight corners on the formed metal pipe that I couldn't replicate with the braided fuel hose. Firstly I ran the braided line up from the pump to a 'P' clip mounted on the rocker cover bolt. A good curve radius and no fouling here. Then to a bracket which was supplied with the conversion kit to pull it away from the viscous fan. Then it was a simple matter of attaching the other end to the Weber. On overlook here is how it looks now. You can see the full route of the braided fuel line here in this pic. I was very pleased that with the choke fully open after a few turns of the crank she fired straight in to life. Once up to operating temperature I set up the idle speed by ear to approx. 750-850RPM. Need to check accurately but it sounds about right. Needs to go on a CO meter but I'm very pleased with how smooth it is in operation. Thanks for looking.

adam73bgt - I am quite lucky about the panels being so available for MGBs, however I've also heard that there are so many bad panels available on the market! If I'm honest being a novice at panel work I would have agreed with your comment about it being less daunting one part at a time. However bjornagn is right, it's the same task I'm facing with my transit, you have to cut everything out before putting back in. Unfortunately I've got a lot to cut out.
bjornagn - Where do you recommend purchasing panels from? You've clearly done a lot of these over the years going by your comments on other threads. I have a 'spit' that I'll be putting the car on once it's stripped down, that will hopefully make it easier to weld. But yes I may well be wanting some more in depth advice from you if that's ok? It depends how far I go with it as I need to spread my time and money over my whole collection. So it may just not be financially viable for me. However I'll always update my threads with any decisions.

If you are doing sills, it does not really matter if they are a bit rusted or a whole lot rusted; you are doing sills anyways. See page 3 for a walk-through that I did for another person in you spot. While it is quite doable, I suspect that he bailed when faced with doing the actual work. retrorides.proboards.com/thread/183293/vanessa-1979-mgb-dat-rust?page=3That is very useful indeed and obviously took a long time to put together, so thank you very much for that. It's much appreciated. It's not just sills, it's inner sills, outer sills, floor pans and castle rails! You can't see too easily from the pics. But it's looking rather crusty under there. I need to strip it down further to assess how much more it has gone. In fairness it's quite solid along the front chassis rails, reasonably solid around the bonnet and boot, the boot floor looks ok but it's gone where the chassis rail meets the rear valance. Worse case scenario is that it will be a parts donor car for others to live on.

Josho - Rest assured mate, when I need some parts I'll drop you a PM to have a look for me. At the moment I'm still in strip down mode as you can see in the updates. So another nice day outside stripping down the MGB. Unfortunately it's not looking good for the plucky little Brit! First thing I did was remove the passenger side front wing, nothing too different here in comparison to the drivers side. The actual wing itself looks a lot newer than the rest of the car, a good solid sturdy panel here. However, the bottom of the front inner wing and A pillar is looking far from solid or sturdy! Next up I turned my attention to stripping out the rest of the interior including the carpets. Immediately I knew we had problems as the carpet was soaked! Probably years of raining in to the cockpit left me with this nightmare on the passenger side. It's really not much better on the drivers side either! This is how dropped the floor is on the passenger side, it's pretty much sagging down as there's not a lot supporting it anymore. Whilst stripping out the interior I was surprised to find both the 6V batteries still connected. Needless to say they had exploded some time ago as they were expanded and burst in their casings. They were so corroded I just cut the leads off. I finished removing the rest of the dashboard from the car, it looks in pretty good condition. The inside now looking a bit like this. At the end of play, this is the pile i'm looking at on the floor again! I fear there's plenty more to be removed as well. On the plus side it's saving some weight surely! It's actually quite possible that this may be too far gone for me, I need to sit down with the panel catalogue and work out how many panels need replacing and at what cost! Thanks for looking and all comments welcomed.

One question I have to tru and help my security on my xr3i was it am actual disklok or was it a different wheel lock as would think it would be bloody difficult to get a hacksaw to the wheel with a disklok on. Want to know if I should be beefing up security in any way Cheers Josh Seconded, was it a 'Disklok' or a different steering wheel lock?

mk2polobloke - I'm hoping it will be a vast improvement over the Varajet. It certainly looks a better constructed and engineered piece of kit. Hopefully you will like my latest update as I was already way ahead of you So time for another update on this. It was a glorious day today so I decided to get all the cars out for a shuffle and finish off the Cav. So picking up on the Weber conversion where I left off, the next job was to fit the air filter. It had always been my intention to reuse the existing metal pancake filter for that originality factor. No matter how hard it would be. This is the air filter that came with the kit. Now as it goes, it did look a lot better on the car than I imagined it would when it was sitting in the packet. However, it just didn't sit well with me. The car isn't a sporty car at all but this filter had that look to it. This will be used elsewhere I think. But with some cutting, filing, fabbing and general fettling I managed to get this installed with a good seal. You can see the rubber grommet on the top as previously it was mounted via a threaded rod through the centre from the carb. It is now fitted with 4 bolts and clamping brackets to the bottom half and the top half is clipped down with the existing spring clamps. I think I've made the right decision. I also managed to get the missing exhaust manifold bolt replaced, it's a very strange pitch of thread that I could only get from Vauxhall. Luckily this engine apparently shares a lot of parts and fixings with the Frontera 2.4 petrol engine. Handy to know for any other owners. Next, I decided to get the exhaust fitted. So I gave the centre section the same treatment as the rear box. Here it is how it looked before. Years of shelf dust! Then again after about 15 minutes of metal polishing. Am quite happy with how it came up. Jacked the Cavalier up in to position and fitted the system up underneath the car. All fitted up to the car, this is the new resulting rear view. I'm quite happy with the end finish. I was considering cutting off the tail pipe and TIG welding a 2" Stainless steel outwardly rolled tail pipe on. However I may look at this in the future but for now I'm happy with the look. Looking forward to hearing it start for the first time. Unsure whether it will be louder or not? A nice tone or not? Guess we'll see. Just waiting the fuel line to be delivered and then I can get the Weber fed with fuel then hear and feel how it performs. Thanks for looking and all comments welcomed and appreciated.

This has come a hell of a long way since I last checked in. Looks absolutely cracking. With that level of work and finish you will easy have to have the best mk1 Cavalier there is!!
Absolutely stunning work.

Back in the workshop again today so efforts continued on the new Weber conversion for the Cavalier. Picking up where I left off the first job was to fit the adapted base plate which allows the Weber setup to mount on to the Cavaliers inlet manifold. This is where I came across a hurdle. The gaskets supplied didn't match up to ports in either the Carb or the base plate as can be seen below. Now I'm no engine expert by any means but I know enough about flow to know that this just didn't make any sense. So I marked the gaskets with biro to the port size, removed the gaskets and cut to the ports. Refitted the assembly and now it looks like this. Next little job was to take the old tin manifold heat shield and gave it a good clean and degrease. Then a good coat of VHT silver and it started to look a bit better. The rusted hole I will remedy with a larger penny washer. Then I fitted the heat shield on to the manifold and also the insulator plate to the manifold ready for the Weber to sit on to. Next it was merely a simple case of placing the Weber on to the mounting studs and bolting them down. Next up I fitted the throttle cable to the new linkage as per the adapted in the kit supplied. This was a nice little setup and worked very well. I also refitted the manual choke cable that was already in the car. Just needed to trim down the cable as the previous set up came in from the other side. I made sure that both the throttle and choke had full travel and return. That's were progress was halted for the day as ran out of time. Should hopefully finish it off this week. Thanks for looking and all comments welcomed and appreciated.

Ok, so it's time I brought this thread a little up to date. Firstly I have had absolutely no luck with the DCOE manifold vendor, I have emailed them in both English and German, no response initially then a really useless response that didn't help. So I decided to call them and discuss, unfortunately they didn't speak English and I don't speak German. So I gave up completely on the idea. I've also decided that the Varajet carb rebuild is going to be shelved. After searching the internet I found a Manta forum that talked about a Weber 32/36 Carb conversion kit. Got negotiating with a local supplier and a cash deal was done. Et voila! It's a very comprehensive kit and good useable instructions to assist. You may notice the rectangular air filter. I don't really want to use this, I want to keep the standard pancake so I'm going to do some fettling to achieve the OEM look. So in preparation I gave the old inlet/exhaust manifold combo a good degrease and clean, then masked off in preparation for paint. Then after several coats of 'Very high temperature stove enamel' it all looked a bit like this. A big improvement over the earlier look I think. Next up I turned my attention to my bargain stainless steel exhaust find I picked up last year. I decided to try and polish up the rear box as this will be the most visible. This is how it started out. Then after some coarse to fine wet and dry on the tail pipe and some metal polishing all round it ended up looking like this. Which I'm quite happy with. I am still thinking of TIG welding a different tail pipe on to the box but I'll have to see. Hope you like and as usual all comments welcomed and appreciated.

carmad - Thanks fella, update below. flyingphil - Thanks mate, as said above there is a new update below. Thanks for following. Little update today, started on stripping the rear down now. Managed to strip down the rear lights, the rear portion of the cars wiring loom, stripped off the rear bumper although I couldn't get the brackets off at all. The bolts are rusted through the chassis. The bumpers weigh quite a lot and I can see the practical side of running without them. Here's how it looks after today's efforts. As you can see the rear valance joins the list of rotted out panels.

Mk2polobloke - I'm not going to change anything too much, but as you can see below there are little details to be changed here and there. denta - Thank you very much indeed. So a little update, something that was bothering me and needed to be rectified were the modern number plates with post 2001 font. I don't like them on older cars. So I wanted the period correct plates. I found a company that still makes them and put in an order. The quality isn't great as the rear has a bit of dirt between the plate and the backing but hey ho! I also love how old plates filled the whole aperture as opposed to knew ones looking lost. Only a minor update I know, but thanks for looking.

bgt - Thank you for following buddy. I will definitely give you as much detail as possible. Will be a little while before I start stripping down the MX-5 as I want things to be in order as I can imagine I would get confused with both different wiring looms if I'm not careful. JoshO - Thank you. I will no doubt be taking you up on that. Can you get everything for both then? Ok time for an update today. I'm getting really stuck in to the strip down now. Once you get going stripping down it's quite addictive. First job was windscreen out. Unfortunately the screen is scrap as it has been scratched by the wiper arm somehow over the period of its life. I also had to cut the rubber as it had hardened. I then decided I'd make a start on the inside of the car. It's full of old junk and curse word. Got most of the dials out, removed the centre console and all parts surrounding. It's only a few wires holding and cables the dashboard in now. I did have a little bit of a helper, wasn't much use though and mainly just slept on the job. Next up I decided to have a look at the front wing. I removed it, most of the screws/bolts had to be drilled off. However the wing is a very good panel with no rust at all. This can be reused. Bottom of the inner wing and A pillar is really rotten. Not sure how bad this is in MGB terms. A lot of crust fell out along the outer and inner sills. Along the bottom of the inner wing too. Nice bit of weight saving I suppose! Most of the rest of the inner wing looks pretty good and solid. Not too bad around the rest of the panel. I just need to find a home for all the removed pieces and parts now. Thanks for looking and all comments welcomed and appreciated as usual.

Nathan - Some great advice there yet again. Thank you. Vanpeebles - I have thought about fibreglass panels so it's maybe an option. So today it was time for some stripping down of the BGT. Basically started at the front of the car by removing the front grill, radiator, front engine bulkhead, front valance, front bumper, front lights and front wings unbolted. Just the bolts from inside I need to remove. Early days but it was nice to make a start on the MGB. Thanks for looking and all comments welcomed and appreciated.

Jnrdinosaur - Thanks buddy, glad you like it. Sal - Thanks mate, the only thing I'm still considering is changing the wheels. I need to get the 13" originals ready to go back on the car. I'm thinking of a conservative band on the later 14" on the car now. On the subject of the MOT It passed! The inspector was rather impressed with the old girl and also gave me an opportunity to adjust the CO and HC from the gas analyser. Right result.

So it's a big day for the Cavalier tomorrow. First MOT for it in my ownership. So today I've replaced the cam belt and water pump that needed doing as I've no idea when it was last done. I also did the fan belt just as it was an unknown to me. I used Gates stuff, can't complain about their quality as its good value stuff. Then I broke out my polishes and gave the old girl a good hand polish. I was really pleased with how she's come out in fairness. The roof could do with a machine polish at a later date. Really pleased with Lesjofers and how the car sits. It drives nicely too and not too bouncy. What do you reckon?
