ahh ok cool, as it starts fine as it is I'm not going to bother upgrading at the moment. Long term plan is for a C series engine 4 speed box that will be on 12v.
Most things I'm doing currently are to get it useable for as little outlay as possible purely as i see spending money on the engine and gearbox i want to remove a little backwards.

I have no issues starting? so kinda unsure why I would need to add anything else cable wise? found issues with the carb and ignition so have fixed/bypassed them also? My front seats are very worn out so stitched them up as best i could for now then made some covers from a couple of old shirts. Think i was scared more of the sewing machine than removing spring clamps off a shock. Vicious machines they are lol.

ill try not too, whats its purpose?
Its the connection between the shaft and the fan itself the waterpump shaft is slotted and the fan is spotter, and the pièce of metal slides in between as a separate pièce of small metal. Of probably has a name but I can't remember the word for it in english..
nice I'll make sure I keep an eye out for it. cheers

I was told on another forum that the auto choke on these can be temperamental but could be bypassed easily so I followed the instructions I was given. I removed the black cap on the side of the carb and the flicked the spring to hold the choke in the off position (assuming it was off as the revs suddenly dropped??) i reset the points and now have 57degrees dwell. Idles at close to 750rpm now and i have adjustment on the throttle stop. I set the timing by letting it run smooth or rough as the timing light i have used keeps throwing a wobbly when I'm trying to set the advance so ive kind of set it to ear, seems to want to sit and idle nicely and rev cleanly so ill leave it there for now i think. When i was setting it at what the gun was saying was 14 degrees it revved way higher and sounded like a tin full of marbles.... I will try in a bit and see how she is at cold start.

I saw the thread revival and i was sure you’d sold it, glad I found this post to confirm I’m not completely mad just yet... Good luck with the engine It got me thinking .... but selling up to get the welding done seems a high risk strategy ... 😀 Lovely car ! worked well for me lol

Please be careful when you remove the fan from the waterpump. Don't lose the small peg thats sits in between the shaft from the waterpump and the fan itself. It's not in the rebuild kit. ( at least not mine and guess who lost it...) ill try not too, whats its purpose?

I think I'm fighting yet more issues, possible air leak, carb issues.... the way this is going it's going to need a full strip down and rebuild as I'm not sure if the dizzy has too much play too.
The timing looked to be about 20-25 degrees retarded. Got dwell at 54/55 degrees now, its meant to be 57, initially set timing to 14 degrees advanced and it revved right up, downside was I didnt have enough adjustment on the throttle screw to drop it to an acceptable level. if I adjusted the fuel it just ran curse word and died. So I've it to idle okish and the timing back closer to tdc to get it to idle at sub 1000rpm. It's gotten very dark so cant do much more but it's doing my nut in now.
just want to get out and put a few miles on it 😭

nope, all seems to be good now, starts with ease and runs smooth and clean by the looks of things. I will keep an eye on it all obviously. I've also ordered a water pump rebuild kit and a few other gaskets and bits. Unsure of the delivery time scale on them though but once they are here I can hopefully get out and use her a little

Went out to set the timing, quick dribble of fuel down the carb and shes away on the 6v with relative ease. soon realised I didnt know what I was doing.... couldn't find the timing marks on the flywheel, hmmm, there are what looks to be some on the crank pulley though but packed it all in as it was raining and to go double check what I was faffing about at. Water pump is definitely leaking so on the hunt for a rebuild kit for it, or a cheap one but they seem to be super expensive currently.

Swapped out the oil for some fresh 20w50 gulf mineral oil and fresh coolant.
Car started and idle fine 🤷🏻♂️ no smoke no issues. I'll try and get the water temp gauge working next ........

Ok so I don't want to condemn it just yet, this morning I've been outside and flushed the cooling system with some water and washing up liquid lol. Strangely the water that was flowing out was only a tiny bit dirty like you would expect. No oil or sludge from the bottom the rad or the head? I've left it in there to sit for a few hours and I will flush it some more later on. I should also be picking up a compression tester so i can check that too.

cheers guys, as suggested above i think ill hit it with a comp check first, though the fact it starts very well now on the 6v would make me think not? sounds smooth enough (ill post a vid shortly) nothing from the exhaust at all either.

lol doesn't solve the gearbox issue.
not sure if I just have renault paranoia and a dirty coolant system? car still starts perfectly well. idles well. might try cleaning the coolant system out and flush it all and try again.

Great, the car started on the button a mo ago. Noticed on start up the water being thrown out the overflow past the pressurised cap. I think the hg is gone 🤦🏻♂️

Right all fresh bits fitted and shes up and running. The carb is so old skool it doesn't seem to have an accelerator pump jet? so pumping the throttle doesn't seem to help when cranking. The 6v also is slow as funk if the battery isnt tip top. Any way quick run to a local garage for a splash of fuel, still dog slow but gives a little more confidence when pulling out. I think I have another slight leak though at the water pump, yay more tinkering. Oil change next. Didnt many pics though 🤦🏻♂️

shes a 3 speed. on the way home the slightest incline and I mean a tiny rise in level would kill it off. Hopefully the dizzy being loose and plugs being bad was the cause.

removed the dizzy and found the clamp that held it not doing much so I adjusted that to make it hold the dizzy tight. Everything inside seems to move freely too so fingers crossed it's all good. I mean it cant be too bad after doing 130miles in the state it was in. Have removed the rocker cover and everything looks ok though in will gap everything before refitting. Plugs should be here tomorrow so hopefully I can put some more miles on it with (hopefully) a little more poke and willingness to accelerate.
