There's a hose from the top of the pump with a stat inline (directly at the outlet) to the rad top and rad bottom back to the pump. The smaller feed and return on the pump would normally go through a heater matrix and header tank, mine just goes to a header tank. So no other outlets or anything for it to go to. Maybe i should of tried it with no stat but even with a 75c stat in it still climbs when driving.
When i did rev the engine i could see flow into the header tank so id assume the pump is good but i will split it in half and make sure it looks good.
You really know your onions with this stuff, cheers for all the help you are giving its really appreciated.
I will be giving everything a good look over this evening to check for any issues, maybe it is an airflow issue but it all looks pretty good unless being close to the rear bulkhead causes some sort of weird flow/pressure problems, the original rad and engine had a fixed mechanical fan so the higher it revved the more air was drawn through.

Just some ideas. I know you said previously that the fan is turning the correct way, but is it definitely a puller fan? Are the blades scooping the air? I’ve tried looking at photos of the fan on page 34 but it’s like one of the optical tricks on FB where it looks right one second then wrong the next. When running and the stat is fully opened, it there a large temperature difference between the top hose and bottom hose? This will show as Darkspeed speed that the coolant flow is wrong and the rad is being bypassed, as when the stat is fully open the two temps would only be probably less than 10 deg apart. Can you put the original radiator back in to rule out poor airflow through the mechanically joint radiator you have? Its a generic flat blade type, looks like a china special and i have my doubts its actually a 6v fan. Was sold as a fan that can go in either direction but no idea tbh When running at idle with the fan running the top and bottom hose both burn lol. If/when my temp probe actually turns up i can check the difference. Not sure if i posted it here or on another forum. I revisited the header tank flow thing and added a 3mm restrictor in both the feed and return to it. it hasnt helped today. the old rad was leaking so thats why i removed it. I may be able to refit it and test at somepoint. I also want to check the water pump whilst the head is off just in case. Now ive had the head off and cant find fault it kinda has to be the cooling setup doesnt it? A lot of the old cars move the rads up front on the dauphines and r8s though not necessarily upright and getting high pressure. Maybe the increase in water volume helps?

bacxk to ignition a moment, should be retarded 2-4 degrees from when unleaded came iun and had heat build up in bonnet of a kit car shaped like a bathtub which high vents sorted so i think your bonnet lid lift would do. wondering if relocation of sender unit is somehow getting more heat than original location, temp probe should help with that i guess maybe hoses insulaating so heat cant get away......read back, thats a straw isn't it? I'm not really sure, the general consensus in the old renault world seems to be set it a base value and then keep advancing until you hear pinking and backing it off abit. Base is meant to be 4-6 degrees advanced at idle so ive plonked it there.

We’re the waterways good on this engine ? tbh i didn't look to closely down beside the liners, head is good though. Good shout, i will see if there's a bleed/drain plug i can rod the block through.

Ah, the Roadkill fix all. Remove the bonnet. You have proved yourself to be fairly methodical so sure you will get it resolved. P. Ha i haven't got that extreme yet. I have jacked the bootlid with a couple of bolts like the old school racers did, not really tried it yet though.

thermostat turned up about an hour ago, so i tested it a pan to make sure it worked then fitted it. When driving from cold the temp seemed to stay in check for longer but once the heat set in its definitely running above 92c all the time.
I did have a chat with a friend who makes aftermarket rads and intercoolers who said that my rad was pretty cheap but wasn't sure if in his opinion it was an airflow issue or radiator design issue. He has offered to sort me an aluminium rad but id rather deduce what the actual issue is before jumping in with something bigger that could just be masking another issue or might not help at all.
So on my list is a cooling issue/rad/airflow or an engine issue/hg/crack somewhere i guess? a few in the know have said i shouldn't have an issue running it the way i am as I'm running a near standard r8 engine. They did have mechanical fans though.
Still awaiting the temp probe and the temperature gauge so still just guessing currently.

when its supposed to be 100 deg c can you touch the rubber hoses? if you can it aint 100 deg I cant touch it before the fan comes on at 92c so its definitely that hot at least, and hotter when driving. Just don't know how much hotter lol. No deliveries today so no thermostat or temperature gun yet.

Did you fit some mesh to the scoop to stop any nasty's from being ingested into the rad as your driving? Personally I would a fully interdependent temp gauge and sender so it does not use any of the car electrics other than a power feed. no i havent, the original doesnt have any, all ive done is extend that about an inch lower than before. not sure if theres a way i could rig something up for that, the radiator is a fair bit above the scoop. Ill keep an eye on it if i ever get it running well enough to use

So i have today, fitted a bigger scoop underneath, fitted all the engine cowling and on the dash it shows no different when running down the road. So its either ok or overheating but i don't know which lol. Its good to have it all in to hopefully improve the efficiency of it all but I'm really clutching at straws until the other stat and temp probe turn up and i can check things properly.
As i side note i fitted a 6mm (smallest i could find) restriction in the hose to the header tank which made no difference on the gauge so i then clamped the hose closed and drove and again made no difference to the dash running temperature. I will leave the restrictor fitted to limit flow to the header tank as suggested.

Cheers man, hopefully its all actually running fine just the dash is no where near where i think it should be. As you said once i can check it properly ill have a clearer picture.

It looks to me like your expansion bottle is just a large radiator bypass. Make up a bung with 4mm hole drilled in it and insert into the hose that runs from the top of the head to the tank. from what i can tell the hoses would normally run through the header and heater matrix but every renault seems to be different. ill give it a try

yeah its hotter on the gauge, that said looking around the old engine did possibly run cooler. Early ones didnt have a stat and later ones look to have had a 75c items. normal running/75c seemed to be bang in the middle of the gauge so it would make sense that an engine that runs 20c hotter has the gauge over near the warning line which looks to be around 100c. Yep ill check i actually have an issue before i go mad swapping and changing things again. cheers for the all the help jonsey much appreciated
