I swapped an XR4i that had overheated twice for a LDV 300 Perkins diseasel years ago.
I was going down A580 and got overtaken by a Proton Triple valve that was towing a tiny trailer.
Not having this I thought and planted my right foot got up to about 80mph then lost 3/4 of the tiny bit of power available.
Looked like they'd just elected a new Pope!
Turned out woodruff key on timing wheel had slipped.
Death of a Slurpa! 😀

Seen this on eBay looks good basis and nice early one! I'm guessing "unforseen circumstances" mean that you're not up for a swap?

If it's standard and over 10 years old then BIVA is NOT required. Hi Kapri any idea how I would stand with an import that is standard apart from a roll cage? Car has chassis number but no NOVA form and is from Hungary and over 10 years old. Thx Ian

Been considering a VW Touareg in either 3.0 v6 tdi or just going for the full fat 5.0 V10. I know about the propshaft centre bearing problem which is best replaced with a solid prop without bearing. There's a V8 option available but a rare model to find that was discontinued and makes little sense compared to the mighty torque and mpg of tdi's.
They also had a problem with valve body on auto transmission kind of hoping if they are still driving round this will have been addressed by a recall or servicing.
It's a lot less to worry about than L322 or P38. Given up on RRC's I don't have or want £10,000 or more tied up in a tow vehicle all the cheap ones are money pits!
Anybody running a Touareg for towing duties.

Not the answer you are looking for.... 80 series Landcruiser. I have owned most kinds of LandRover up to Disco 2 and would pick the Landcruiser over any of them. Roughly 4k, heated leather, air con, diff locks front and rear, ledgendary reliability and available as a v8 if you want. Absolutely no contest in my opinion. Quite like these but seems that roughly 4k should now read as rough one's from 4k. Seem to be more like 6-8 and seen ppl asking 13k way too much money. Was also looking at Patrol Y60 but they seem rusty things now and someone earlier said they weren't good towing. Don't want another yank don't want the part's hassle and the blind spot with trailer. For some reason an RRC, P38 or L322 all seem same money to insure but 110 came out £150 more. I'm leaning towards L322 as seem available for similar money to P38. Worried about gearbox on L322 as it seems if it goes most places can't fix even Ashcroft transmissions. Apparently needs torque converter put on a dyno? Sensible voice says P38 with Thor though some nice Gems equipped limited editions about.

Well I got a box trailer the other day that weighs about 1.25 to 1.3 tonnes, 16 ft load space.
I've got some RRC's to view in 3.9 auto and 200 tdi manual and auto flavours.
Also a 110 with 2.5 petrol to see possibly.
I did have a couple of P38's I fancied a drive of but one seller seems unable or unwilling to answer questions. Car is advertised as taxed and mot'ed which is a lie as been out of mot since January and tax isn't transferable now anyway. Car would have to have had tophat liners done and heater must work. Not fancying dash out for the heater blend motors.
Anyone do heavy towing with 200 tdi wondering if manual or auto would be best? If I can handle the diesel clatter?
Too used to the sound of a nice V8! 😀

Reading with interest - well I was interested already, but moreso this week as I've almost bought a P38 diesel when I couldn't find an X5 I liked. What I really want is a TDV8 in grey with a burbling exhaust, but what I want to spend doesn't cover that! Nor will it suffice for a 110 van! Is the M51 powered Rangey really that underpowered for towing? I had thought they would have had a low diff ratio actually as having had plenty of M51 cars, I know they aren't fast or torquey. If they struggle then putting a 2.5t load out behind one wouldn't help things? In which case, V8? or up the budget to an early L320/322? or revert to the X5 search? Forgot to post re X5 neighbour has one which he loves when it works. It's just had 4 new air donuts and compressor done and is still leaning on n/s rear. It's currently being shown up by a far more reliable Kia Sportage.

Well I was going to look at a 90 locally the other day but had to work. It kind of has the wrong engine but I got 2 spare V8's. It's a 2.5 petrol with lpg.
The Santana PS 10 is a good shout I've been looking on LR forums and only read good things!
It's essentially a series 3 chassis on parabolic springs with isuzu trooper 2.8 td which is a torquey motor and reliable. Spares may be a bit awkward?
As far as I can tell the rear axle is a Salisbury but not Land Rover not sure on front axle I think it's series?
I did have an Isuzu engined 110 shortlisted to view but really need to sell something first as space is short.
Maybe getting trailer this weekend as seen one I like! 😀 The RR classic is doing well in poll. Maybe I should sell Sunbeam and Amazon estate and follow my heart.

Had a good trawl last night 500+ LR 90's to check out on eBay.
Was quite struck by an 07 tdci 6 speed then realised why it was reasonable. £460 road rent is insane!
So I'm probably sticking to pre 01 to keep it retro and in budget.
I think a 110 would be better towing too but seems less about than 90's.
I'd prefer V8 tbh as have a couple of spare motors but that limits me further in choice.
I'll try and get a drive of a P38 which is probably as comfy as my Merc.
Mate reckons a P38 isn't me as I'm all about the old school. Before the Merc newest car was an 88 and that was a 4wd turbo rally car.
I've got 67`s a 70, a 72, a 76, a 79, an 81 and an 83.
I've not bought trailer yet but am thinking either box trailer as clam shell race shuttles are crazy money.
Hopefully I'll get to drive a few things this weekend as Mercs in for motting tomorrow! 😀

I run a P38 4 litre V8 - heavy on fuel but I don't use it every day - maybe once or twice a month for towing other than that it tends be all local runs of a few miles round trip - it's low mileage & looked after - with the air suspension it is dream of a tow vehicle - it's like driving a very comfortable hover sofa! Thread is lacking a pic so here you go The P38 does look good in metallic paint! Is the 4 litre the one or is the 4.4 as good? I'm led to believe they aren't keen on lpg or is factory version a different beast? Daslandroverman I fully agree on the off road mods I'm not going green laning! George on SOUP kinda frightened me off the RR classic they certainly can rot! When I said tracks I meant racetracks sry I was vague. I'm thinking the Classic or 110 would be a sound investment where the P38 would probably do admirably for less cash!

Thanks for suggestions so far.
I should have given more detail. I wouldn't be going long haul just local tracks.
Hadn't done homework on series didn't realise only 2 ton cap.
I've driven a P38 50th Anniversary from Anglesey to Stoke and it was lovely tho I wasn't towing. Slightly ugly but nice inside.
Am I right in thinking softdash RR classic isn't as well made/more troublesome than earlier model? Guessing the LSE is going to be more hassle than it's worth? Does the Brookland body kit make them rot more than regular version.
Discovery is undoubtedly capable but was advised to keep away from Disco 1 due to rust. They just don't get my juices going tbh!

Hi having got rid of the dayvan I've realised I need a Landy or Rangey to tow car on trailer.
I've had a couple of series 2a's both standard petrols. Tho last one had 90 front and arches with wellers.
I'm wondering if I'd be able to manage with the series on parabolic springs or would be better going for the 90/110 on coils?
Or take the more scary route of finding an inexpensive RR Classic?
I'm daily`ing a w210 V8 estate but thats only rated to 1.8 tonnes and think at ride height and having AMG kit and wheels would be no go anyway. Has no towbar anyhow.
I'd consider px`in or swapping my Amazon estate or Mk1 face-lift Carlton/Monza hybrid estate or both for a good example.
What's the general consensus?

Presumably a Jag CWP if it's 3.54 as they're 3.07 or 3.31 as standard? Thx scimjim I Just checked tag it's 43/13 so it's the 3.31 Seller told me a 3.54 but I wanted higher numbers or low final drive anyway. Will edit title now.
