Co2 is perfectly fine for pretty much anything a diy chap would want, so if you are able find pub gas instead as it will be much cheaper, but as said above you will get more mileage out of a smaller welder with a mix.
Gasless flux mig is great for outdoor and thicker stuff above about 1.5mm but not much good for bodywork, so you need gas.
A good second hand mig over a new cheapo one will be night and day difference, so find a recommended good used one would be the advice. Look on the welding forums for that info.

No I wasnt on about that, i was on about what would happen to the tax I'd be paying on a £30 tax Lupo IF any conversion occurred and gave a couple of common Lupo conversion scenarios of 1.8T and 4 pot TDI.
The point was if the £30 tax band was preserved or not. It isnt. So in my mind it is a shame to waste a £30 tax Lupo when there are plenty of other petrol donors about that I'd be happier with the resulting tax hike doing a conversion on.

Nothing wrong with it as long it's taken into account before doing a conversion. I'd rather wring 150HP from the 3 pot and pay £30 tax than get 200HP or so from a heavier 4 pot and pay £245 tax though.
if it was an older lupo based on CC then there is not such a big loss to consider.

Ok I have the answer as I just phoned DVLA, it reverts to pre 2001 method of engine size under or over 1549 cc so £150 or £245.
Bottoms.

Have 2nd Lupo TDI now.
It would have to have a cat though for petrol yes?
4 pot TDI is looking the easier route all around unless they go nuts on the anti diesel bandwagon that seems to be looming with ever higher tax on fuel and VED bumps.
Electric ticks all the boxes for me but damn is that expensive to do (unless milk float).

Pre 2001 Y plate are based on CC so your '94 astra would go from the less than 1549 cc to the greater than 1549 cc tax.
I'm talking about post 2001 cars in the different VED bands based on emissions.
Spoke to MOT man today about emissions at MOT time and he said diesel conversion no problem, petrol would be a definite problem.

Hey I'm just tossing scenarios around at the 'mo regarding taxing it after any conversion, nothing is lined up yet. Also the curse word seller on Ebay has gone quiet and was feigning not getting my messages so more than likely not, i don't have a 2nd Lupo TDI anyway. But this still apllies to my current TDI, I will probably pop the engine by extracting silly BHP from the 3 pot and then plump for a conversion of some sort.

So going for a 4 pot TDI conversion should be fine as it will still be a diesel smoke test then. (as long as VED doesnt change to the new engines band that is!).
What about change of fuel type to petrol? How could that work?
edit: ok thanks, posts overlapped.
I shall go speak to my MOT man in the week and see what he thinks...

So clear as mud then?
If I change engine to a 1.8T on V5C VED will be based on that engine if it is a post March 2001 engine, but not if it is older?
...or is the VED locked to the shell and the engine is irrelevant? But come MOT time the emissions will be expected to pass as if it is Band C (111-120 g/km co2)?
Not as simple as it seems.
Has anyone here got 1st hand experience of this scenario?
Cheers

I've just bought another Lupo TDI with £30 tax. I am tempted to stick something else in there say for example a 1.8T or a 2.0TDI and I am finding conflicting info on how much tax I would be paying after doing that.
Some say tax will stay at £30 but it will fail MOT on emissions because it is based on VED rate, others say VED will be based on the engine conversion. So which is it or something else?
If the tax will rise there's not much point doing it and wasting a £30 shell tbh.

I think you can run VAG 1.8T on a quattro box with FWD disabled and locked to get RWD.

Volvo M90 whiteblock gearbox from a 960 afaik. Edit: ah, ignore this idea, the price seems a bit stupid on these as they are now deemed as "rare".

Hehe, I love diesels.
Basically saw the diesel golf for about 20 seconds max very early in the day, I didnt see it again me being the gathering noob I didnt realise the show fields would start emptying soon after the awards so by the time I got around the fields near 4pm half the cars had gone. Note to self, get your ass around the fields before lunch time next year. Yes I was kicking myself some for not getting my Lupo tdi there or on the hill, next year awaits.

Might help if you give people a bit more to work with, features (aside from diesel) and like mk1, mk2 etc. There was only one, so that was quite a narrow field to choose from.
