Thanks all for the opinions and I now have a plan. As the car is in close to race trim I will do one or two RWYB early next year. The biggest job will be to change the diff to a 3.9 locked one.....and get the engine working, hoping that the clutch plate has not rusted onto the flywheel after so long. This will hopefully use up some old tyres in smokey burnouts to improve on my much earlier efforts!

These wagons do seem to rust well! But they are kept outside in all weathers and had a hard service life. In fact, the present wagon has its top corners at the fixed end broken away. Apparently, in scrap yards, they were "shunted" by grabbing the top edge with digger buckets!

Looking forward to seeing some pictures when it is out of the garage, camera perspective, when close, is always a problem. It does look very good even so!

Well I seem to have survived this pandemic and I keep thinking about my Sprite. Do I get it out of hibernation and either Sell, do a couple of "Run what you Brung" drag outings, put it into street trim or all three? Opinions please.....

And more floor/bits of sides removed... The end door looks worse from the inside, but is structurally sound, so has been repainted. It can be re-plated at a later date and we can use the time now to get more wagons back in service.

Obbviously no end to your talents!! But it looks as if the molten brass has been oxidised or something besides a still damp, plaster of paris. I seem to remember years ago, watching aluminium casting, a degassing? powder was put into the melt....And, as Nick says, a riser will also be needed. Looking forward to Plan B!

Hi PHUQ All the running wagons are fitted (-with vac brakes) or through piped. We do not run goods trains as loose coupled. We still have one wagon which has not yet been restored (but painted quickly in 2017) which will need a through pipe fitted. It is the one in, from the right hand end, with no number. This will be the last one, after getting our other non runners through Rothley over the next few months. This is a pic of those wagons.

Three more wagons were brought to Rothley by the Ops dept and one has passed its FTR exam (B 279742). The other two need some "light" body repairs (B 279721 and B573403). This means that we have 20 of our 30 wagons with new FTRs. We are still on schedule for our 30@30 at the end of next year......

Hi PHUQ Of the running rake, 13 are Vac braked and 4 Through piped.....so far. Whilst it does appear to be a faff, these wagons were old when we got them in the 1990's and not all have been reconditioned in our time! If they work to spec they are left alone. The flexible hoses are also a source of failure due to old rubber/ageing/weather and flexing in use. We have 6 more wagons due for FTR ...then we start on the 7 non runners to get to our 30 @ 30 target. We will be having a Sales Stand at Rothley in a weeks time if anybody wants to chat or buy....

We have also had to do the annual "Fitness to Run" examinations of our running wagons. There are 24 of those at present and we do 6 at a time. That is 24 axle boxes to take apart to examine the oiler pads and axle journals.... So far 17 out of 18 have passed - a couple with a bit of work on the brake cylinder, several new vacuum hoses and some new oiler pads replacing. (There are pictures of axleboxes and oiler pads on P5 of this thread).

Excellent work on the seats etc. Certainly in shoe making, steam heat was used where the leather was stretched over the toe of the last (foot mould). Dry heat and/or steam heat was used to "set" the leather after the shoe had been made, before taking the last out. (I used to sell/lease machinery for shoe making and tanneries back in the 1970's and visited Australia and NZ).
