Liking this! I've had a couple of VR6s and they remain one of my favourite engines. Except when its time to do the timing chains, what a horrible job. Followed you on IG to see progress on the Golf, those Porsche wheels will look great Yeah, I am very happy I did not have to do the chain job myself haha Thanks folks! This weekend I did the front brakes and a cv boot and also got new snow tires put on the stockers. Gonna do the rear brakes this week whenever I find the time and then maybe also finally install the coils I've had sitting in my garage for the past few weeks... Winter tires were not a moment too soon, as yesterday we saw our first snow this year. At least the dog's happy!

Took care of some minor things this week. Was missing the tow hook cover, got a new one in the mail. European Golfs didn't have cupholders but I need one for longer drives. So I sourced a US model cupholder and cut apart my center console to fit it. Now I'm just waiting on my brake stuff to come in so I can do that sometime this week.

Soooo! My previous daily was a 2010 Ford Mondeo, it was good car but I wanted to get back into something older again as to me it always felt kinda like driving a rental. 16 years ago my first car was a '92 Golf GT Special with a few mods: When I sold that a year later, I always swore I'd own another Mk3 one day. Fast forward to this year. When a buddy of mine took me along to a Mk2 only meet earlier this year, I came out of that day inspired to look for Mk2s with AC for sale but ended up finding very few and none of them really caught my eye. Then I figured I might as well look at Mk3s again. A bit shocked by what people wanted for them, because a good, original VR6 seems to be roughly between 10 and 15 thousand Euros. That's when I remembered - a buddy of mine had a VR6 sitting in the back of his shop that he bought just because it was offered to him for cheap by a customer. A quick phone call later, I went over there to have a look at the car. I saw it on the lift and I was impressed - the last time I had seen a Mk3 this clean was probably 15 years ago, and even then I can remember seeing cars with rotted out strut towers, non existant sills and swiss cheese'd hatches. The only rust on this one was a small hole on the passenger side fender. However, the car had sat for about 10 years, so some more work was likely to be expected. The interior was in very good condition too, although some trim pieces were missing or broken. The leather seats were retrofitted by my buddy, the matching door cars were included, although not fitted on the car.The engine ran, but sounded bad - the chain would need replacing. We struck a very decent deal - I basically got the car for what it cost him + whatever the chain plus some paint on the fenders (I'd source a new passenger side fender first), which was roughly 5k€. Ready for collection at my buddy's place: Then I drove it over to my garage. Then I got it registered.

Mondeo has been my trusty daily for 3,5 years and I really can not say a negative word about it! However, I sold it three weeks ago, as the desire to drive something older again was too strong. So... the replacement is gonna be this: '96 Golf VR6 - will open a thread on it once I've picked it up. It's still currently at my buddy's shop, getting some work done (timing chain and some service items) before I pick it up.

Long time no update! Weekender was a blast! After I got back to Germany, I remembered that I had a cool old steering wheel sitting in my garage and went about freshing it up and installed it in the Porsche. 32cm diameter, so feels like driving a go kart. After that, in June, the car was present for a few days at PS Days Hannover, a medium-sized modified car expo here in Germany. After that, a small car meet in the woods called Unterholz. Chill vibes. Back in August I went to the UK again for Rollhard show, together with my friend Lukas and his 944 S2. Small shooting on the way back home: And Lukas' co-driver took some nice rollers on the way home! Apart from that, no major news. The car has been dead reliable this year and I've been enjoying it to the fullest. Currently it's pulling daily duties as I've sold my Mondeo three weeks ago. Replacement daily is already sorted, but still needs some work. It's old enough to count, so I'm gonna open a thread once it's registered. I'll tell you what it is, though: It's a '96 Golf VR6.

I've arrived in the UK, Portsmouth to be exact! Car handled the trip perfectly, no issues whatsoever. There's a small rattle coming from the exhaust since a few days, so that will need adressing soon. Anyways, see ya on the weekend at Goodwood - come say hi if you see me!

Yesterday we had a bank holiday here in Germany. As is tradition on this date, there was a big Porsche meet in Dinslaken. Usually over 2000 cars. I took the 944 and had a good time - and even managed to snag some inspiration for the 924... Rest of my photos from the event can be found here: www.tiefundbreit.com/?p=12726Also, I just got done booking my ferry and hotel for the Weekender. So stoked! See you guys at Goodwood!

As some of you may have read in my 944 thread, I recently bought a second transaxle Porsche! It's got a cool story and I'm aiming to bring it back on the road. The car started life as a 924 Le Mans - a special edition for the 1980 model year to celebrate Porsche's success in Le Mans. This is what the car would have looked like when it was new: The special edition means it was only available in white with a special Le Mans decal on the side, Turbo-look mesh wheels, a needle stripe interior with white piping, 4-spoke steering wheel, sway bars and some other details. There were about 1000 of these made, 263 of these came with a Targa roof. The seller's father bought the car used 30 years ago for 1000DM (Deutsche Mark) and drove it for about 7 years. Then he suffered some health problems, the car was stored in a shed and largely forgotten. Fast forward to about 4 years ago - the seller (let's call him J) remembered the car and decided to restore it. He got it for the symbolic gesture of 1€ from his father. He started some work on it but soon discovered that he's not a mechanic and a full restoration was too big for him and so the car sat again. Now the barn were J had the car stored currently is being sold and so J is about to lose his storage space and so he decided now it was time to get rid of the car. He made a post on a Porsche group on Facebook - no pictures, basically just "Hi, I'm giving up. My project is too big for me. Contact me for details." and didn't receive any responses. A few days later he added some pictures and "It's a 924 Le Mans. Bad condition, needs restoration, whoever will restore it may come pick it up for 1€.". As soon as I saw that, I immediately contacted him - for 1€ it would be a good deal just for the parts alone, even if the car was complete garbage. I went to have a look at it and... it turned out to be better than I expected. It needs a LOT of love to be sure, but it's not a complete wreck. The body is okay-ish, with a very bad repaint ages ago, but no really major rust spots. Some minor spots, but no holes. Engine turns over but currently does not run. Interior is garbage, seats have rips in them and seats and carpet are moldy, but I got a second set of decent carpets with the car. All in all, it's a solid base. I'm not entirely sure yet wether I'll be restoring it to factory condition or turning it into something custom. At this moment I'm leaning towards a mix of the two, but we'll see. First order of business is to take stock of what I'm working with, which will likely happen during one of the next weekends. Yesterday I transported the car home and it's now sitting in my garage next to my 944.

Thanks! I am happy to report that the car was at the TÜV yesterday and all the modifications got approved! So now I'm also legally allowed to drive it again with the mods. And also... I, uh, I kinda bought another one, even though it was totally not planned. A '79 924 in need of a lot of love. Sat for a long, long while and the guy who sold it to me made a start on restoring it, but didn't get very far. Will be bringing it home on Sunday. Will likely be a while once I can start on the build, but this thing will get back on the road. The best thing? The price. Just 1€.

Very nice build and interesting to read also. Could you tell me more about your car ramps sizes? I'm looking for some, but can't decide which one would be my ideal solution. Thanks! Regarding the ramps, I'll try and remember to get measurements when I'm next over at my unit. If I remember correctly, I just bought them on ebay randomly. I do have two sets of ramps, one is slightly longer than the other and thus has a better ramp angle for lower cars, but it's not that much of a difference. Anyways... last saturday I started on the rear suspension. Got everything out so I could remove the torsion bars as I will no longer be running them with the new coilovers. Happy to report that all the bushings and such in the rear suspension still looked brand new, so I didn't see fit to replace them. Only a brake hose was porous so I kinda went all out and ordered new braided brake hoses, drilled discs, pads all around and two new rear calipers. So got the main axle back on the car and that's as far as I got last week. On Wednesday I got the trailing arms, sway bar and the coilovers in. Today I continued on and installed the brakes and drive shafts... And then it was finally time to put it back on it's wheels and see how it looks! Left side front wheel has a 15mm spacer for testing purposes, it looks good but considering that the top of the wheel will come out a bit again once the camber is corrected with an alignment, I think 10mm spacers (or 7mm since I seem to only find these instead of 10s) will be the safe bet and it will look perfect. I'm really happy with the outcome. Next to do is to do the front brakes which I will do sometime next week, then get it aligned.

I wish my driveway was flat enough to do a deep clean on jack stands, but it's all crooked and wobbly and I don't even like jacking up the car there lol. Kinda envious.
Love your Touring mate!

Tires are on! Sadly I was bit too excited and completely missed that the wheels shipped with shiny metal valves included. Told the tire shop when I brought them over yesterday to fit some metal valves. Come to pick them up today, standard plastic valves, ugh. Oh well, with the caps from the included bbs valves they are tolerable for the time being. Will change them out sometime, however. Front suspension is back together now! Got 45mm of thread left on the coils, but I doubt I'll go any lower. Still, nice to know I could... Anyways, gotta do my brakes this year as well, but for now they'll have to do. Then it was finally time for the big moment - first time on the new wheels! Oh yeah, this is going to be goooood Front definitely needs a spacer, though. First off I don't like how far inset it is and I can't fit the center caps without a spacer as they hit the dust cap! Gonna start on the rear suspension install tomorrow. Let's see how bad that's gonna be...
