I changed the gasket several times on my 8v engine recently and couldn't get a seal on the front corner beside timing belt. I was doing it on car from below and the gasket always seemed to move slightly as it was torqued.
I used a layer of gasket sealer from Vauxhall directly onto the sump and then cable tied the rubber gasket in place through the bolt holes. Flipped it over to place weight of sump onto gasket and left over night to set. Fitted it next day minus the cable ties and with sealer on top side of gasket and gave it a good few hours to go off before filling with oil and had no problems since.

There's a set of 13" steels with good tyres for sale on mk2cav.com Facebook page.
Can't get a link at minute on my phone. Are you on Facebook?

Good progress mate The springs I used were Lesjofors kit 4594616 which should also fit your car. Here they are fitted to my hatch beside a mate's saloon on standard suspension and wheels You can get the kits on eBay but check part number as there are two variations of front springs on mk2 Cavaliers. The garden hose is actually the original fuel pipe fitted to these cars believe it or not. I'll keep my eyes open for a set of 13" steels for you.

The paint looks great on this after its wash.
40mm is a good drop on these cars. That's what I've got on mine and it sits well. You can also keep the standard shocks at that height. I've got a set of 15" alloys from a mk3 fitted but I'm sure 13" steels won't be too hard to source.

No point in two coats of etch primer. Just one light coat to bite into the metal.
For a repair that is unseen I use Etch primer Zinc primer Seam sealer (pu from tube. Drop in hot water before use) Top coat which can be aerosol, stone chip etc Waxoyl

I'm very happy with the three boxes I bought and have no issues with them. For what I paid I won't even complain that they're £50 cheaper this time

The premise of the show is for people who are unable to finish their projects either due to ill health or that of a close relative for whom they have put before their own needs. I also recall one gentleman who had put his community's needs before his own having his car restored.
I personally enjoy the show and have no reason to doubt the workmanship going into the cars and do not in any way see it as "sob stories".
As for the others who have ran out of time or money comment. Your honestly not serious are you?

I tried to contact the original dealer for my car (the mk2 cavalier in my profile) for the same purpose of requesting stickers and any info etc. I had the faded ones in the car so knew the dealer was Shaw & Kilburn from Luton who were involved in Dealer Team Vauxhall rally cars back in the day. The car also had registration of RBH which was used on some cars registered to Vauxhall, although not always the case, so I thought it may have been used for photos / press etc. Unfortunately the dealer is now run by Evans Halshaw and all old records have been lost so it came to nothing and I was none the wiser.
Issues with the roof rotting eventually put paid to the car so interesting early days or not I scrapped it but engine and gearbox amongst other bits are in my current Cavalier.

Went to get this online and can't seem to get the price to drop. Is the deal still on? It looks like the offer online has finished. I only noticed it on Tuesday and even the lad in the store was surprised it included the middle box so probably a limited period only. Overall I'm very happy with the boxes and have started filling them up but looks like I'll need to buy a few more tools

There is a weight on the driveshaft but that's not the one that will be hitting the floor. There is a second weight bolted on top of the driver side lower arm / wishbone which is the one you want to look at.
If your unsure which bit to remove have a look at the passenger side wishbone for comparison.

I can't see it making a huge difference to how the car drives if you take it off tbh.

Is it lowered by any chance? There's a counter weight bolted onto the driver side wishbone that can hit against the floor on lowered Cavaliers. I used to have a 60mm drop but changed to 40mm due to this issue.

The auto will do what it's supposed to and mine sat at motorway speeds no probs so if it's what you need then don't let me put you off. On the owners club there is a member, Dawn, who has 4 automatic mk2 Cavaliers so they can't be too bad Good luck and I hope you find a good one soon

Thats a shame that it turned out like that but at least you walked away. The autobox on them is a 3 speed and it's not that great tbh. I've just converted my hatch to a manual which is a fairly easy bolt in job but you really need a manual donor for all the bits so if you can try and find a good manual convertible to begin with. Check out www.mk2cav.com and you will see some really nice convertibles. Here's a couple of links to whet your appetite www.mk2cav.com/index.php/topic,20210.0.html www.mk2cav.com/index.php/topic,23477.msg220390.html#msg220390 www.mk2cav.com/index.php/topic,14366.0.html

I don't have a cabrio but I currently own a mk2 hatch so some of what I know is relevant.
Engine will be 1.8 injection which is a good motor. Came in 18e and 18se variants with main difference being injection set up (e jetronic and se motronic). Both reliable but e specific parts becoming a bit scarce.
Bodywork check sills and arches. If it has plastic sill covers check behind them for rot. Also check petrol filler is still attached to outer panel. Not impossible to repair but time consuming. 2 door arches and sills available new but I'd stick a set away for future if I was buying a cavalier.
Rear chassis legs can rot at spring seats and where axle mounts are. Replacement legs are very hard to come by.
Front floor pans can rot where they meet the bulkhead. It's an are that's triple skinned so holds moisture. Again not hard to repair but time consuming. Lower bulkhead as above and on some models a sound deadening mat was fitted which holds moisture which can cause rot.
Roofs are specific to each car so if you need to replace with one from another car it will take some adjustment to fit. Some trim is common to all mk2's and some is specific to convertible but you should be able to find anything you need.
Overall they're good cars that are easy to work on and enjoy and don't command too high a price tag.

Is this what you mean? That lower trim was standard fit so yours may have been lost. I don't have one spare but if you try on mk2cav.com someone will probably be able to send you one.

Looking forward to seeing this progress as I play bass myself. Always liked the telecaster basses but never got round to buying one as a Jazz has always worked for me.
What's your plans for electrics and pick guard etc? Traditional Fender or a more personal set up?
Good luck with it. James
