Well, it wasn't as big as I expected the event to be, I think the publications were slightly misleading...

This has come round quick! I've got my individual stand pass printed off, and I'll be heading up in convoy with an MGB GT (weather dependant!)
If anyone else is in a slow mover (65mph all the way probably) from my way, and want to ride in convoy, speak up!

After you starts this thread I spotted it on eBay, and was gobsmacked at the price.
For that kind of money it would have to be mint condition, including paint, low mileage, good runner, and MoT'd.
I'd value it as it stands at about £200-250. Running on all four with an MoT £500-600.

I got asked about the snorkel noise ages go (on a different site), but finally managed to do a little video.
I didn't pick the best areas, as there was a lot of background noise, and I couldn't really open up the throttle, but it gives an idea...

I've only had Mk3 Astra'a, are any of the suspension parts interchangeable? If so there are loads of lowering spring kits available. But not many people have had luck with DIY coilovers, and premade are a fortune. Again, this is Mk3 not Mk2...

I love the old Astra vans!
If you want to make it stick out as a Retro van, I'd keep the colour too. It's very 'period'.

I've not looked at the figures, but would think an old Volvo estate might fit the bill. As long as its not too heavy itself...

I was concerned at first about what tyres I could use. There are a lot of autograss ones on the market, but I assumed they would not be road legal. Thankfully I was wrong, and many of them are!
To use 4x4 terms, the ones I use are AT (all terrain), so are a bit louder than road tyres, but certainly liveable. They are rated past UK speed limits, so I use them on the motorway as well. Grip is much better than I thought, but can be slippy on wet tarmac. This is not a car for speed though!
As far as sizes go, I am restricted on the front. If I go too big then the tyre will foul on the lower spring seat of the MacPherson strut. I'm currently working on ways around this.
The rears weren't a problem, but then I lifted that quite quickly. I don't know if my tyres would fit on the rear of a standard Astra.
I don't know how big I can go without causing too much strain on the gear box, as not many people have done this before!

Failed the MoT the other day, handbrake not working on one side and a snapped anti-roll bar linkage.
Fiddled with the brakes and fitted a new ARB linkage, and it passed today!

Hahaha... That is just terrible! Lol
For a 1970's motor that isn't a bad fail. The only bit that would worry me is the emissions, but as the others have said a service and a good thrashing should sort that.
With the steering box, is you can't source new seals, you might get away with instant gasket.

Welcome, but I don't think we ever got as far as setting up a stand for this club. Lack of interest sadly.

I've recently started working with fibreglass, and I'm doing easy jobs (repairing a kayak, and building a new cockpit rim), so far it hasn't gone very well!
As said, making from scratch would be a long job.

I'm still interested in going on stand, but I didn't manage to drum up any interest.
Might be getting a bit tight on time to organise it now though.
Does look pretty bad on RR though, to be associated with the show but not even bother to show up and have a stand! Lol
