Been trying to sort a sticky starter issue for a while now and don't seem to be able to get to the bottom of it.
The solenoid always clicks when you turn the key but the motor doesnt turn over.
I have rebuilt the starter. The bushes are fine, no play. I have stripped and cleaned it twice, everything seems good. I put the armature in the lathe today and skimmed the com and refaced the brushes. I can find nothing wrong with it. The solenoid switches easily with no resistance across the terminals at all (i previously took the solenoid apart and smoothed the contacts out.
I just stripped the ignition switch and its operating fine (its pretty new) and has no resistance across the switches. Shorting the ignition terminals makes no difference.
Engine earth is good, all terminals seem good.
I'm struggling to think what else it could be. Next i will go through the last bit of loom to make sure there is no other connections ive missed that might be bad. Other than that is there anything else that can be wrong with the starter itself?
Sometimes it starts first time, other times its anywhere from 2 to 10 tries before a clicking solenoid results in starter action.
Id fit a new starter but they arent available by the looks of it. I can get this one checked and rebuilt but ive already done it, unless there is a magnet or windings issue.
Anything I'm missing?

Add me to the list; I agree about the wheel arches, the proportion of the body to the sills is wrong, the sills wrap under the car too quickly, and the back panel needs to be deeper. And the exhausts poking up and out are hideous. The convertible is even worse because the windscreen just looks like a last minue add-on. I don't think it hurts to view this design through the prism of time; development of the E-Type started in 1957, i.e. more than 60 years ago, with the production model going on sale in 1961. It had a 0-60 time of under 7 seconds with a 150mph top speed, fast today but supercar performance in that era. What would the average man have driven at the time the E-Type was being crafted? Nothing, most families were not fortunate enough to own a car. If you were lucky enough to drive you might have been behind the wheel of something like this; ![](https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/26798700487_d601b854dc_b.jpg) I think in comparison the E-Type would have looked like it had just been dropped from a spaceship. Agreed. Doesnt stop the majority of motoring journalism always banging on about the e type being the best looking car ever made. The one in the post i like though, but not because of the design on the body. I even don't mind the wellers and mesh windows!

Considering i don't understand the E type hype, not a great looking car in my eyes, i think its great! Id chop it a bit though. I know what you mean, the 2+2 is the ugly duckling in the range, the 'cabin' is too big. But how could you not love this? ![](https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/ViQAAOSwmAJdU9Qi/s-l1600.jpg) I don't like any soft tops. I don't think ive ever seen a convertible that looked better than the hard top. With the e type, i dunno, i just don't like them. I don't like the drop in the wing tops as the come towards the scuttle, the roof is a bit high, the screen angle is awkward, the curve of the rear side windows looks wrong. Its like the whole thing is close, but its all slightly wrong to my eyes. My mum had one before i was born and loved it (a 6 cylinder i think). I know i am in a vast minority, but they have just never looked right to me. It's hard to put my finger on exactly why as i think it is pretty close to being nice, but something isnt right.

it has a top light , so it's going to be an Air B&B parked under a walnut tree?? Hmm are You psychic? Is it that obvious? Wait and see....it will be delivered in a few days time.....its a chicken shed at the moment.......i have two good ideas for its future...which one I choose is very dependant on its condition... Ive already paid for it and I'm already regretting my impetuously....I think Ive taken a step too far with this particular vehicle ![;-|](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/squint.png) Hey ho....you lot know about as much as I do.....serious case of buyers remorse at this end....I mean...honestly do i really need another unrestorable heap in my garden? Its located about eight doors down from my house and I have an open invitation to further inspect it at any time....truth is I don't want to....based on my very brief viewing Its so bad that I honestly don't know what I was thinking of! I just got carried away....thought it would make an excellent thread on retro rides ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) If its not going to be used as a vehicle but as guest accomodation surely the more rotten it is the better. Remove the entire floor and make a new flat wooden floor inside the shell. Means you have a properly flat floor to work from. Can also make full use of any available height.

I do feel that before further investigation is done I should get front end alignment checked, cause I can see sense in the car pulling under braking from incorrect settings... Seems wise. You may be chasing a problem that isnt even brake related, just shows up under braking.

Have you re bled them? Could be a little air. Sounds like the only possible issues now are either a small amount of air, a slightly breaking down hose or just needing to settle in.
I wonder if there is any chance breaking force may be pulling one wheel to toe out but with all the steering work you have done recently I'm sure you would have spotted any looseness anywhere.
I think it was mentioned before that maybe the pads took some material damage?
Can you rig something up to press the pedal by however much you choose so you can depress it a little and check wheel rotation so you can find out if one side is actuating before the other side or if both sides actuate at the same time but one side is creating less friction?

Can’t wait to see this one as it develops. The K conversion looks brilliant, but sticking a V8 into such a small car is bonkers and such a silly idea that it has to happen. If we only carried out logical ideas that German bloke would never have stuffed an airplane engine into the back seat of his Gogomobil. Did he ever make it drive? Curious how the transmission worked out.

I've debated it but I know as soon as I buy it a green one would turn up! Its £900, not 9k. Buy it and if a green one turns up buy that too and sell the silver one. You have been looking for a year!

Awesome machines! These are going to rocket in value, high quality, limited production, imo the next best thing if you cant afford a vincent/brough/rudge etc.
A few quirks apparently but sooooo cool!

Ahh, the wonderful velocette! Ive been actively hunting a velo for 2 years now. A 40s 350cc? Yours? 1939 MAC 350. It may be up for sale but I get first dibs. Check for updates on my Volcano Lair thread in case I forget. I'm holding out for a 60s venom, but not having much luck! Like all old bikes prices are going up and the only ones that are coming up for sale are from dealers fishing for sky high prices. Keep meaning to join the club and try that route.

Fireblade is a good shout. 900rr urban tigers are going up in value rapidly. Another bike I'm always on the look out for. My mate owns a bike shop & he’s just sold a mint urban tiger for £9k. Up in value is right Christ! They were still around 5k a year or two ago. Bit more from a shop naturally.

If you want a sports bike of that generation the ZX9 is a good bet also if you can find a decent one the Yamaha 1000 Thunderace is quite roomy.Fireblade 900 especially later ones, are actually quite roomy as well. If you want a hooligan naked it has to be an early Bandit 1200 an absolute riot and can be modded from mild to mental for sensible money also suit big lads. They are a fun vehicle, not daily long distance transport. Pick what you like, get on one just to check, then go with it. Can always sell it on and get something else.
