Bought from this here parish a week or so ago, this one came in just in case the Alfa 166 sold, leaving me with just the ZTT as a daily. I like to have two cars I'm happy with as a daily, as I just get bored driving the same car five or six days a week, however nice that car is. The 166 is such a special car, but with developments on the coffee shop front, notably taking on a second one, I could do with the money from the 'luxury I don't really need' car in the bank. Hence the 166 finding another good home, and me taking in a Rover 45 V6 in part-ex, but that's a story for another day... I'm digressing....this one........... 1999 Rover 416 SLi Auto, so Honda engine and box. This particular car stood out to me in the FS section here simply because it's the saloon. And the Honda mechanics I guess. But mostly because it's the 4 door with a proper boot. I've always liked saloons better than hatchbacks, hence my thread on 90's saloons forum.retro-rides.org/thread/196394/90s-loons?page=1&scrollTo=2301748 I always liked the shape of these little 400 saloons. The general proportions, and the rear lights always looked right to me. I like the colour, it's low owners and low mileage, at only 51k miles. I viewed it, and met it's nice gentleman owner milk and his wife, near Leeds one day when I was down near Bradford picking up part or two for the 166. Although it was in need of a general clean up (I'm sure milk won't be annoyed at me saying this), I could see that his advert had been honest, and it looked straight and true underneath the dust and dried coffee! I went away thinking on it, and a deal was done a couple of days later. A further few days later, and it was on a transporter bed on it's way up to sunny Saltburn.... ![](https://i.imgur.com/fwVr91r.jpg) and arrived safely... ![](https://i.imgur.com/ZYqo6aN.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/HymyRqJ.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/G7PgUyT.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/YTc2STO.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/PmKeC1J.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/2cr3kDf.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/ffFIwv2.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/L0RkRxC.jpg) Decent spec...Electric windows all round which all work, working remote central locking, working electric mirrors, and working audio controls on the steering wheel. I will look at getting some repro original ones made up at some point. ![](https://i.imgur.com/E4Ln0K2.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/9xgHfgQ.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/2VZkaKW.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/UNwUb8n.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/5TwBQt6.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/tee7FHy.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/RGATAQO.jpg) And that's where I am with it at the minute. It drives absolutely spot on. The list of things to do includes the timing belt and sort the roof lining and door card fabric. Then see if I need two 400/45's when the px comes in in a couple of weeks. Then I've got a second coffee shop to get up and running in six weeks......

It's the old Virgo's coffee shop on Chaloner Street mate Walked up there last night to have Dinner at Sergio's and saw it was empty so wondered if that could be it. Good luck. I think Chaloner St is crying out to be pedestrianised, you're ideally placed if that ever happens. Now that would be fantastic if it happened

Big news....we've only gone and agreed to take on another shop in the nearby town of Guisborough!! Yes, I'm aware there's a global pandemic going on, and the hospitality sector is only just waking up. Believe me, I know. However this was just too good an opportunity to turn down.
More details to come

Another day, another Yorkshire Scoundrel consumed. Rumours that the range will expand to include "Durham Bounders" and "Bedfordshire Rascals"* are yet to be confirmed. *I'll get my coat... Cleveland Fool maybe?

This just about squeaks in here, being registered in 1999, so it's now 21 years old, and might interest some good folk in here. And it's and Alfa, and everybody loves an Alfa! The 166 replaced the 164 in 1998 as Alfa's offering in the executive sector of the market. This first generation model ran until 2003, and the second generation facelift was available in the UK until 2007. I have to say, I used to dismiss these as ugly. I now think they've aged and matured well, and I now appreciate the design bravery and quirkyness that Alfa incorporated in the 166, especially in a sector where they were competing with the big Germans. I've had rather a few cars, well over 75 now, and Alfa was a box that I had still to tick. I had always been waiting for the right one to come along - Busso V6, good colour (not necessarily red), low miles etc, and when I first saw this car advertised in this very parish I was instantly attracted to it. It took a while for me to be in a position to buy it though, and luckily it was still available when I could do the deal. When I got the car, it needed some work. The two front tyres were 5 years old, and the rears were 10, so I replaced all four tyres. We found that it needed a front caliper AND a rear one, plus discs and pads at the front and a new battery!! Anyway, it's a lovely thing and I didn't begrudge the cost to get it right. A wash, clay, polish and wax really had the amazing colour (Volcano Black, which I believe is still available) popping. I have to say something here. This car makes me feel 'special' whenever I sit in it and drive it, in a way no other car has made me feel, and I've had quite a few Mercs, Audi's, Beemers etc. Everything is just beautiful and classy inside. I only ever listen to Classic FM in this car, as it just feels wrong to listen to anything else. I had a weird goosbump moment the other day in it.....I was enjoying a lovely country road drive, when Rossini's Barbour of Seville came on the radio, obviously sung in Italian. Seriously, it was a chill down the spine couple of minutes. Absolutely perfect. The black leather Momo interior is a retro fit, as it would have originally matched the cream leather doorcards. I personally love the contrast between the black and cream. Basic details: 1999 Alfa 166 3 litre Busso V6 (225bhp?) I had the aircon re-gassed on Thursday, which was very much needed (30 degrees, 25/06/20). I'm also heading down to Bradford on Wednesday to collect and fit a repaired master window switch from a 166 enthusiast. Another little thing sorted. Love this car. It's a bit of a luxury that I probably don't really 'need', and I won't say it's a keeper, however, for the time I have it I'm going to thoroughly enjoy it, I just know I am. Ciao.

Shop update: it's still alive! Mind you, I wouldn't have been without the government grant we got, which I'm hugely grateful for. Of course the government has made mistakes, but hand on heart, I'm not sure what more they could have done to support businesses like mine with the grants, the furlough scheme etc. I have eight staff still on the books through the furlough scheme, and I'm going to start bringing them back slowly (topped up with part furlough payments) from 1st July.
I've been working every day for the last seven weeks, Monday to Friday, with a non-furloughed lady covering me on weekends, open for takeaways only of drinks, traybakes, scones etc, with one person in the shop at a time, that sort of thing. I successfully sold out of 40 afternoon teas (delivery & collections) on the first four Fridays and Saturdays of those seven weeks, but found I couldn't do both those and be behind the counter serving in the shop, so the afternoon teas have been put on ice for now. That's been a good thing to come out of it, knowing we can put together a real top quality product that people loved.
As for the next step, opening up for seated customers, which is allowed from the 4th July, I'm in no rush to change things. We get on really well with the Conservative Club next door, and they have a big garden. They've decided not to open until after they review the situation in late August, which means I have full use of that garden for customer use, which is great. The local council are consulting with myself and other small business owners about what we'd like to see happen. Before I got the go ahead to use the garden next door, I couldn't see any way forward other than to ask they part pedestrianise the street outside, and I think they might agree to that request, but I'm not sure it's now necessary. For now anyway. As for inside, I'll take out a table or two from upstairs, and the same from downstairs, to space people out a bit.
So that's how things stand. A really nervous, stressful time, but we'll see the other side I'm sure.
As an aside, whilst we were closed for six weeks, I kept myself busy by delivering prescriptions full time for five of those weeks, as I knew they were short of drivers. My wife wanted me to just stay home and stay safe, but I'm glad to have helped.

As an 18 year old one of my friends bought one of these off a family member. We all thought he was a bit mad, but actually he was a genius - lots of room, could leave it anywhere and never got pulled over by the police once (unlike the rest of us in escorts, astras, etc). Nice to have you back Geordie, nice to see some more of your car exploits, hope things are working out now after the impact of Covid / lockdown on your business. Thanks, I appreciate that. Business still alive, and I'll update the 'Time to jump' thread soon.
