When I was 17 my first car was a Cortina 1600E. The clutch was a bit tired so I decided to pull the engine out so I could clean the bay up and paint the engine properly at the same time. It didn't need anything other than a clutch but I ended up partially stripping the engine down, ported the head and reground the valves in!

Good ol Manta's, they do like to rot. I'm with Craig though, depends on what you're aiming for with the car.

Clean and simple is the way That's the sort of look I'd be aiming for. As stated "clean and simple" plus it remains nice and practical too. Personally I always prefer to see a really clean car - you've already done a great job cleaning the engine bay up, why not continue right round the car getting everything as clean as possible? If you're on a budget, all it'd need then is some Vauxhall alloys and a lowered supension kit and you're on to a winner.

Just noticed you're in Wallington. Me and emdee on here are from Wallington and we're both mk2 Polo owners too.

Hi Matt, I see this is a Formel E model with a 1093 high compression 60 bhp engine and 3+E gearbox. Does it have the stop start system and if so does it work?

Mmm, looks like you've checked most of the obvious things Tim. However, double check the plug leads, run the engine in the dark and make sure they're not shorting out as the engine moves in the bay. Lead orientation? Double check again, it's really easy to get them mixed up. Check the brake servo hose hasn't worn through causing a vacuum leak. The hall sender is a known weak point on these, though it normally fails totally and the engine won't start at all. Remove the dizzy cap and check the inside of it. Hopefully you should see nice clean evenly marked contacts and rotor arm. It's not unknown for new ones to be poorly made and fail miserably.
Good luck and hope this helps. Cheers, Richard.

A friend of mine has these for sale from her old BMW Compact. I don't know the correct name of them but they are made by BBS and have the M badge and BMW centre caps. They could do with a good clean but they're in good condition with just the usual minor scuffs from curb damage. The fronts are 7 1/2" with 225/45/17 tyres - one is a Goodyear Eagle the other a Yokohama. The rear ones are 8 1/2" with 245/40/17 Continentals. All have approx 3-4mm of tread left. I'm near Croydon in Surrey and it'll be collection only. She's after £160 ovno. If you're interested please contact me and I'll pass on your details. Thanks, Richard.

Yep, Fiat twin cam FTW! I put a 2 litre one in my old 1300ES saloon 20 years ago. I never laughed so much, mopping up all the cool dudes in their XR3i and GTi's was just so much fun! ;D As with a lot of big engine in a small car conversions it was excellent on fuel too if you drove sensibly. The rest of the car was purposely left completely standard except for some major spring choppage and decent gas dampers. Eventually a mate of mine bought it off me and on went a pair of twin 40's and a 5 speed box. Then came a pair of different cams! It really was very quick, especially for the time. Said mate was a very good driver - if a bit mad behind the wheel! Pulling over 6500 RPM flat out in 5th gear was not something I wanted to be part of though! Get it done CP, there really isn't a downside to a Fiat TC conversion.

TBH, I was a bit disappointed when I saw the first pic of it in yellow. I though, nooo I'm not keen on that. However after seeing the subsequent pics with the silver stripes and clearcoat finish added I'm like yeah yeah yeah yeah! Stunning rebuild and attention to detail mate. It's nice to see you've kept all the best OE type bits and binned the nasty old low tech stuff like drum brakes and recirculating ball steering! Congratulations on a beautiful Mustang.

I concurr "Round rear arches are wrong on a breadvan!" The clean straight lines are the best thing about the shape of the breadvan, and why I prefer the mk2 to the slightly rounder mk3.

Shame I couldn't make it this time, some very nice cars there. That blue mink mk2 Cortina is a stunner. I want it, NOW! Chevette looks very tidy too, real shame about the front end damage. Count's Lada is on maximum win at the minute.

Yeah I know they're all CIH engines, not the best units ever. Very heavy and don't really breathe/rev that well. So you're going Ecotec then eh? Nice, look forward to seeing the progress.

My dad had an S plate 1900 GLS Coupe one of these many moons ago. It was exactly the same colour too. Went on to buy a Manta GTE Hatch in '86 which I bought off him in '91. Loved and had a few Manta's since, great cars. Yours looks to be a superb example. How do you find the 1600 engine? Personally I never found the GTE's to be much of a performer.
