I'd be tempted to leave it 'as is' outside, with something like a 58bhp 1256cc Vauxhall engine/4-speed upfront. Won't tax the rest of the running gear too much, bits are easily available, and 35mpg would make for a fun useable daily. Sensible old bl33der, ain't I? LOL I tell ya what Bri ...... that is EXACTLY what I was just thinking! Bit of a pain though as I just sold my old 1256 on Has Sir Grunty of Gruntyville Mansions still got the 1600GT X-flow/4-speed out of that Dutton??

I might be running the start controls on that event.... but have yet to be asked (If not I expect I'll marshal generally anyway) Quite a fan of longmoor, was there only recently running start controls for the stage there as part of the tempest rally. Wish I could take part myself, but even the endurance rallying format is a bit too expensive these days to do on the cheap. Longmoor's a long way for us, we've marshalled it many times in the past but with a 175-mile trip just to get there it's meant leaving home before 3am just to get there in time to sign on....then when the rally's finished it's another 3 1/2 hr trip home. This year we're treating ourselves. I just make the tea when we're competing (ASCMC Tarmac Stage Rally Championship), I know my limits. Have mised it this year, Deano's taken a year out and rebuilt the car ('82 Talbot Sunbeam Ti with a 240bhp XE up front) in time for another full year's fun and jolly japery in 2012. ;D

Would have loved to have seen this. How does one find out about this sort of thing? Cheers Duncan Simples. Join your local MSA (Motor Sports Association) Motor Club. There are literally hundreds scattered around the country, but if you live in Oxford then your best bet is www.oxfordmotorclub.co.uk/ who actually organised this event. Your best online source of information about upcoming events is www.britishrally.co.uk/ where you'll find an absolute goldmine of information about rallying at EVERY level. Their forum in particular is excellent. The same advice is proffered to anyone else who's interested in getting involved in motorsport of any kind. The next outing for us lot is the Longmoor Loco Stages on Friday December 30th which is held at Longmoor Camp near Petersfield, Hants. If anyone from RR wants to join us for the day they'd be more than welcome....just bring plenty of warm clothes and be prepared to get up at stupid o'clock in the morning (we're wimping out this year and staying in a local hotel....the joys of getting old LOL). ;D

The firm I worked for had a couple of the smaller Turbodaily vans back in 1988/89. Suffered from the usual Italian vehicle problems (electrical niggles, curse word quality interiors and...worst of all...tinworm) but willing mechanicals and from memory pretty nice to drive.
IIRC the TurboZeta had a 4-litre 120bhp 4-pot turbodiesel which was fitted to early low-spec 75E12 EuroCargos as well. We did try EuroCargos with that engine in but at 7.5t they were bloody useless on the motorway so we went for the bigger 75E15 143bhp 6-pot lumps instead. Popular with motocrossers in the 90s for their cavernous interiors, I'm surprised they never really caught on in the UK, as they could be driven on a car licence (and still can provided you passed your Driving Test before 31-1-1997).

I spent a quality day today with my mates from the Gung-Ho Rally Team, marshalling on the Carfax Stages. The event, organised by Oxford Motor Club, moved to its new home at R.A.F. Benson near Wallingford this year after spending the last 11 years or so at Qinetic's test track (formerly the DERA) near Longcross in Surrey. 75 crews lined up to face eight special stages marked out on the runways and perimiter roads totalling approximately 60 stage miles. It was incredibly fast in places, which no doubt contributed to the fairly hefty attrition rate...just over 50 cars finished the event with almost all the retirees suffering major mechanical meltdowns. The front-running Mk2 Escorts were pulling maximum revs in top at some points, which equates to 140+mph. Anyway...pics. I was Marshal-In-Chief for our particular section today which, allied with the many MSA observers and Military personnel lurking about meant that photo opps were a bit limited. Managed a couple of dozen half-decent efforts though, the best of which are reproduced here with (as ever) a link to the Flickr album containing the rest. Enjoy. Car of the day for me. Monumentally quick on the straights, and even with those silencers strapped to the back end it STILL sounded awesome. This Fiat 124 Spyder was also awesome. Driven by Bill Gwynne of Bill Gwynne rallyschool fame. Immaculate, quick and well-sorted. One of the first crews to fall victim to 'wrong way at stage split disease' on the first stage this morning, which cost them dearly. Car was quick enough to have been challenging right at the top. HOW beautiful? You should have heard it. ;D Linky: www.flickr.com/photos/damaged23/sets/72157628070264853/with/6371640783/

Bri you don't happen to know if all the Mays bits came off an old T bucket do you? Matt No idea, bud. The Pollitt MAY remember, as I'm pretty sure he had a long chat with the owner. It was almost five years ago, unbelieveably. Here's a couple of pics I took on that day. Beautiful car.

Want to hear it run??
Stick with it, once he gets the hang of the column change he gives it some beans and it sounds HEAVENLY.
I was there that day in 2007, my mate Dave took his 100E and 105E along and I drove the 105E. It was also THE DAY I MET THE POLLITT. ;D

if this and the response on Facebook is anything to go by then the place is going to be heaving... If it looks like we are going to get a massive turn-out maybe we should forewarn the Limes so they can get in extra bangers and bacon? Good idea. Especially since I'm coming, too. ;D

If you're gonna do it, use satin black rather than blackboard paint. Any dents (no matter how small) will be infinitely more noticeable with black paint though, shiny or otherwise.

I can clearly remember Mum trundling into a local tyre place when I was a nipper and having four brand-new Esso E-110's put on her '66 Corsair V4 (EOP231D, Purbeck Grey with red vinyl seats....yes I'm THAT much of an anorak), that would be bang-on date-wise at 1972/73. I remember it well because Daddy D was self-employed at the time and complained bitterly about the cost, asking why she hadn't put remoulds on it.
I can still see her now wagging her finger at him and bawling "Remoulds? REMOULDS??? What price my childrens' safety, you skinflint barsteward?" ;D
