Ok then, here's my new ride.... Having sold my 72 Merc 220d after it stripped me of all my enthusiasm, I spent a couple of days trawling the internet looking to fill the void- I had cash in my pocket and I was looking to spend it ;D But nothing really grabbed me....then the minute I gave up looking, this was listed on ebay...looked tidy and it was only 10 mins from me! Obviously, I had to go look! So, before I knew it, I'd bought this...1981 Passat estate...properly solid, rare for one of these- it turns out the first owner had it for a long time and was a BIG fan of waxoyl! ;D then it was dry stored for 12 years before hitting the road again last year....mileage is a genuine 68000! As a nice bonus, it sits nce and low and rides on 13" Revolutions with 165/55 tyres... Anyway, some pics.... Leaving its old home ( it runs fine, but the guy delivered it for me!) Safely home! The body has some minor surface rust, but paint is all original and the interior is seriously mint! it even came with the original becker stereo and tapes in the glovebox! Saturday Night Fever soundtrack and the best of T-Rex! Good times! More soon!

not a fan of those wheels on that car, I think they're maybe too wide or the arches are too narrow for my taste but.... that's the only thing I can hold against it. Love the nose end of it.

We had one of these when I was growing up. I love them - and the eariler Audi 80 estate front end too. Like everyone says - rare as hen's teeth these days. Have you seen Polarskiego's Dasher/Hatch thread?

Thanks for all the positive comments guys....it makes a change from the negativity about the car thats coming from Mrs. Dasterdley and the rest of my family ;D
The plan is to keep it simple...just a minor tidy up and yet more waxoyl! I really don't want this one rotting....
The wheels may be going as it turns out that one of them is buckled quite badly...on the test drive, I optimistcally said to myself "oh, the wheels need balancing then"....sadly not!
I'm off outside in a bit to put the offending wheel on the back to see if I can reduce the vibration enough to get the car to Ultimate Dubs tomorrow, then I've got an engine mount to change, and after that, a good session with the soapy water (I might even wash the car as well hahahaha....)
That Patrol was an absolute monster...it really had no trouble dragging that trailer and the car as well! The guy runs 4x4 days in an old quarry that he rents, so that tow set up is very useful for recovering broken off roaders!
Mr J- yes, I saw your thread before I went to look at the car...it scared the hell out of me...I nearly backed out of going to see it! but it really is extremely solid- I guess I was lucky!

Well, I've been a bit busy today...I changed a couple of the engine mounts....the car rocks a bit less than before now, and I put that buckled wheel on the back and that's sorted the vibration now, so I'm a happy bunny.... Then I washed it and went on a few different missions in the car...it's so damn useable, I love it- it's not too bad over the myriad of speedbumps around where I live and I've put the huge fuel consumption down to a slightly iffy fuel gauge! ;D All in all, I'm a happy bunny!

these cars are, apart from the rust issues, vey reliable; i would give it a good service and replace the fuel lines; also i would have a very close look at the front struts, they tend to rust and one wheel goes to the left, the other to the right... i am a bit jealous
