Not done too much today, but I cleaned the inside, rearanged stuff and cleared the inside to have space to work. Was quite a mess, as I just threw stuff inside when I was too lazy to clean up ;D And to test my mojo, I did some metal work on my other Tea... retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=readersrides&thread=113432&page=2Yeah, it's coming back and my mind is finaly set to "f*ck the neighbours!" and I don't feel too guilty doing lot's of noise. F*ck them! It wont be forever... They'r noisy too... Cheers, Jan

"somebody" sounds pretty awesome. Also, remember to turn your radio above there up to 11 when you're working.

Painted one half of the engine bay today with a rattle can. Turned out as curse word as expected, but it will stay under the bonnet most of the time. And be dirty. And covered by stuff that's bolted there. Also installed the blanking lid for the California Turbodiesel air intake opening, which was standard on very late W123s. Rest of the daywas spent going mad, trying to obtain a double-hex 12mm socket in pretty much ALL tool stores in the city. Noone had one. Found it at my welding supplier's finaly... ;D I needed it to unbolt the flywheel on the 230E engine I removed from the spares car. I've stripped the engine of all ancciliaries I might need. As I have sold that engine - it's too complicated to convert it to a 230 injection engine, if I'm going to fit a diesel engine later anyway. Doesn't make sense... I'll invest that money in a new welder. Cheers, Jan

Sooo - I did it. Today I actually did some welding ;D I've attacked the most inconvenient rust hole of them all - the firewall in the driver's footwell. A real pain in the ass to weld, everything in the way, you can't get both arms in, and if you do there's no space before your face for a shield etc. - outside is not much better. So I only roughly dressed up my welds - it'll be covered with insulation mats from one, and with seam sealer & underseal and a wing guard from the other. So... Who cares. It's solid, sealed - all I need Also tried a new primer. Unfortunately it's orange. I hate orange primer... Big hole cut in firewall: And all welded up & drowned in primer. Didn't take more pictures. Was too busy to dislocate all my bones So with that done - I think the rest will be much more convenient. Like... The rear valance, floorpan, wheel arch, rear frame rail... Yuk. I think I'll attack the frame rail next. As it's quite as bad to access... Cheers, Jan

Good work! From trying to change an upper control arm by my self I'd come to the conslusion that you Germans had more elbows than the rest of us! I'm glad to know I'm wrong.

But we have two knees on each leg ;D Thanks! In other news: garage looks good. Visited it this evening, and it'S available from mid-june on. And not too expensive, but rather large. And there's a second garage nearby with a pit I probably can use. All good!

COMMUNIST INVASION!!!! Today I noticed that something was strange with the box trees next to the Tea... They seemd a bit - dry. And covered in spider webs. Hmmm. Strange. After some closer looks I saw them; thousands of smal caterpillars... Cydalima perspectalis - Box Tree Moth. At home in China! How the hell did communist caterpillars land in my garden!? And why do they attack my poor car with feces and webs? And why oh why do they STING LIKE HELL? Even though I was under attack by a communist army, I managed to re-install the wiring loom and the suspension hydraulic fluid reservoir. Sealed the driver's side firewall... Then I wanted to apply stone chip on the passenger's side - but noticed that I STILL had not welded the frame rail back on the firewall where I welded the firewall last year. So I did this and gave it a thick coat of paint. And spent the rest of the day watching the paint dry. Anyway - it finaly looks (to me anyways ;D) like there's some light at the end of the tunel and I'm positive I can maybe drive the Tea this year which would be absolutely fantastic

Seems like everyone is making good progress lately, even if we do have adversities like the British weather and Chinese attack caterpillars in Germany.

Yes and no... Even though I fought back the chinese army, I sort of do a lot on other's cars and not as much as I would like on my own. Plus I always end up spending more days in the town I work than at home (which is a difference of 75km/46mls). Hmmm... Anyway. I've sealed the last seam on the firewall. And next week I can hopefully ston chip the firewall and put everything together again. Would love to hear the engine running again And I think I found a net place for the extra two-tone Bosch horns. Right behind the lower grille. Maybe they'r even meant to be there, as the lower grilles have a cutout right where the horn's opening sits right now. Cheers, Jan

Aaaaand five speed gearbox number 3 arrived today ;D A steal at 67€ inkluding postage. Selectors look brand new and the input shaft - a first for my gearbox collection - doesn't have any play. At all! It's a 717.435 out of a 190 2.6. Ratios: 717.435: I. 3,86; II. 2,18; III. 1,38; IV. 1,0; V. 0,80; R. 4,22 FD: 3.27:1 717.401: I. 3,82; II. 2,20; III. 1,40; IV. 1,0; V. 0,81; R. 3,71 FD: 3.58:1716.4XX: I. 3,91; II. 2,17; III. 1,37; IV. 1,0; ______ R. 3,78 FD: 3.58:1 717.410: I. 3,91; II. 2,17; III. 1,37; IV. 1,0; V. 0,78; R. 4,27 FD: 3.64:1 717.435 = 190 2.6 716.4XX = W123 230TE 4spd 717.401 = W123 230TE 5spd 717.410 = W124 200TE 5spd So they'r pretty close together. Only reverse is a bit too short for my likings... Output flange to propshaft has the same bolt circle. And the pilot/clutch bearing fits the input shaft. What I don't know is, if the input shaft is long enoug or too long. Will find that out once I've dug out the 4 speed again. Also got a fitting clutch plate with hardly any wear for 1€. Rainy weather not permitting more work today...

Had a bit of time for a little work. So I put two cans of stone ship on the firewall & wheel arch. Will probably empty at least one more there... Also repaired a damaged wing for someone else, in exchange for the two auto gearboxes. (only roughly dressed up, will be invisble once done) And made a pano of my 'treasure cove' which is runing out of precious storage space. And - a very first for me - I actually threw useable, but useless, parts away. Yes! I threw them in the bin - I was so brave! ;D Major surgeries once I have my garage, should be ready to move there in 2-3 weeks. But knowing me, I'll probably can't hold still - I feel like cracking on right now Too bad I just gave my spring compressor to a mate - could've done the front suspension Cheers, Jan
