Hi, my grandfather have this old flathead V8 lying in the barn. Since he's lost to dementia he cant tell me what it came from, and how old it is. Can any of you identify this engine? I'm thinking 30's something ford V8, but I couldn't find any ford markings on it. here's the piccies: One waterpump per cylinder head: Cute little clutch: Here's the only clear markings on it: Cute little 2bbl intake:

The cast in clutch housing reminds me of a Ford V8-60 but the heads have different stud patterns and they don't have the water pumps iirc.

I'm pretty sure that's not a ford flatty. For some reason, those stars are making me think Russian ? It's a very simple design, kinda like how they built stuff
*probably completely wrong tho*

Where is distributor drive as I cann't see anywhere for one to fit. Ford flathead V8's I've seen have water pumps in block not heads. At a wild guess, seeing you are in Norway, and crude / basic I'm wondering if 1950's Soviet truck origin ? Stamped out serial number could mean ex mil recon unit ? All guesses Paul H

That would be a 1932 - 1936 Ford Flathead V8 (221 series). Displaces 3.6 litres, and has a compression ratio of 5.5:1 to 6.3:1 dependant on the manufacturing year, max horsepower is rated at about 85hp. Flatheads from 1937 onwards changed the water pump design, so....now you know

It does indeed look similar. Different head stud and exhaust manifold configuration tho, but I guess it is a drawing subject to artistic license, and no doubt detail differences occured throught production.
Bang goes my soviet theory. lol (unless it's a soviet copy of ford. I'll get me coat !)

nice try I don't think it is a pre 37' ford engine, as that drawing above is exactly what a pre 37' Ford V8 looks like......

I thought you were joking wit Simca! It does actually look more likely than the Ford one!

Not too sure about the Simca - it is closer than the Ford, but there are two bolts at the bottom between cylinders 2 and 3 on that bank (just below the rad hose) while the mystery engine only has one row of bolts between those two cylinders.

The Simca V8 is also a Ford flathead variant?
Anyway you need a '32 roadster to house this beast, or a Ford Comet

Ford used the flatty V8 in truck up until the 50's,maybe this is one of the later truck only versions? Otherwise do Ford pistons and valves fit the Simca blocks?
