there is rubber in the GB mount, if you look where the two bits go to the gear box, they have rubber washers there I think! either way, no rattles.
long studs was a must. and I was really worried about doing the job, into the unknown etc, but it went well in the end.
update from the rolling road Ok so this morning, I went down to the rolling road. and had the car set up. Ray, the guy who works magic is amazing. he done 4 runs and got it spot on.
He also mentioned the exhaust is restricting it, and one rear brake was binding, so lowered the at the wheels figure.
It made a healthy 177bhp at the flywheel and 143bhp at the wheels. on the chart below, you can see the 4 colours of lines, the first is purple, second green, 3rd blue, 4th red. notice how the curve was and is now. for any of the geeks out there, on the left it read kw's, times that number by 1.364 to get the BHP figure. Very hapy with what he did, after the first run he changed some bits and gained 26bhp . love it.
while I remember - he changed the pilots (i think) from 30's to 40's, main jets were drilled out from 115 to 140 which he said was a big jump, and also the chokes were put up from 30 to 36.
pics and video!
Video
and this is how my morning ended! lost spark
and I have now worked out its the fuel pump. so replacing it later on and it should be ok again.
Thanks daz. Yeh I should be down the next meet also. And yeh a convoy to billing will be cool I'm not sure on my plans yet. But I'll be there.
Done a couple of bits tonight. Fixed the rad fad. Bad earth. So that was a nice easy fix I have won a type 9 gearbox. So hopefully it will be here soon.
I also fitted a new oil breather
Then I fitted another new breather pipe. Old vs new
thanks, I have been reading you thread with the updates etc.
what bhp is yours running? is yours on 45's or 40's? and TBH I have no idea of torque. I just know it has alot when I stick my foot down.
It's running 45's, last time it was rolling roaded I got 177bhp/165ft/lb Although it's not been properly mapped recently so should be good for a bit more (especially after the rebuild)
seeing as its the bank holiday weekend, i thought i would bust a gut and change the gearbox, otherwise i would only delay it and never do it, seeing as i want to come to shows this year, the 5th gear will be excellent. 20mpg at 55mph was not fun lol. 160 miles. ouch.
anyway, onwards with the pictures. all the small bits undone, and rad removed
engine out
big hole
old box vs new box
extra tail length
New box mated
and its in now, but no pics, i will carry on putting the small bits in, then all thats left is the prop, gearbox mount, and gearstick and then it should be good to go.
Hey, nice work getting the 5 speed fitted. The straight cut box should free up a decent amount of funds too if you sell it. Now get on with scrubbing the rest of the black paint from the engine bay!! See ya at the next 8 Ball Diner meet? Cheers, Richard.
thanks, had the 5 speed swapped in about 5 hours. was suprised my self lol. yeh I'm not sure on the straight cut yet, i suspect i will sell it, but want to be confident with the type 9 first. I'm sure all will be well.
lol, i was scrubbing some today when the engine was out, in the hard to reach areas. its such a boring job. and yeh i should be there again. if its all running fine
also, i fitted the prop and it fits, but is very tight. so lets hope it doesnt bind on the box when it bounces. and only a few more bits to do and I'm done
Ok so the 5 speed is fitted and it got me around the block. 1st and 2nd are hard to select. It drips oil and it's curse word lol. Drops of the revs nicely.
So ignoring all of the above I have got on with another few tasks. got this filter through, and borrowed this template and ally from a mate.
Yeah, poor gear ratios are a problem with the type 9 box. They are pretty much masked in a Cortina/Sierra with a standard Pinto due to the car's weight and torquey nature of the engine. In a lightweight car like yours with its powerful engine though it becomes much more obvious. 1st gear is shorter than me ;D, then a big gap into 2nd which in itself is a tad low. 3rd/4th and 5th are ok though. Although your old s/c box was only 4 speed, the lower gears are longer due to it being close ratio. On the plus side, the oil leaks should be easy enough to solve. Gear selection shouldn't be a problem unless the 'box oil level is low or the clutch isn't disengaging enough? Good to see you're getting some filters on there, always better to have them if you can. Good luck with it. Cheers, Richard.
Thanks for the comments dude. At the moment I'm tempted to drag the box out and put back in the 4 speed. As it has changed the car so much. the gear stick hits my leg so will need to quick shift it. I need to shorten my prop really as it's far to close to the gearbox tail. And the oil I filled up to the bung point. Its just sitting on my drive ATM as I CBA to work on it. Low mojo lol.
I wanted to see how much the prop moved when axle was up and down.
confussed me, as having the axle high or low should make the prop come out, and having it in the middle should have it as far in as possible. not on this chevette!
These next few pics are not as bad as they look, more dirt then rust.
This shows the mod for the pedal box
This looks bad, but is only surface again.
and worst of all, i broke this
so need a new one! lol.
Next on the list. Heat and scrap up all the sound deading. to check for rust. Get the wire wheel out just to clean up the bad looking stuff. put it all back together nicely. and move onto other bits and bobs lol.
