I am late to the party here, but if you are looking for garages, I used to live up there..... Tracking, MOT's and other mechanical stuff I use McConechy's on the way in to Montrose coming from the north, on the left just before you get into the town. (I still go to see them if I am back in the area and need work done). Never had anything less than first-rate service from them. Up in Aberdeen, kwik-fit at Dyce are fine for tyre change-overs and other basic stuff if you go first thing in the morning before they get busy for the day. For wheel stuff, its a bit of a trek further north, but Turrif Tyres in...well...Turriff, had a great rep. I am talking maybe 12 years ago though, perhaps things have changed. They did manage to straighten two pretty badly buckled alloys for me too.

Problem is, most alloy repairers see the split rim aspect and baulk at the idea of a basic repair, then start adding zeros to the price..

Jeez dude. are the splits two or three parts? Have you thought about using the faces from the splits and using a different offset or dish? Or sadly to say cheaper wheels I really hope it turns out okay. Cracking looking car, just read the thread. good luck

3 parts. The current plan for the immediate future will be cheaper wheels. Not soon though. Agenda looks like this: MOT and insurance lapse in May. Road fund will be refunded off the MR2 this month. Its coming off the road for "TLC"* Insurance renewal will go onto the freshly bough MX5 (see here: retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=display&thread=145631&page=1) ...and it will be run through to November, taking up sports car duties. The Skunkworks gets built next month (see here: retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=othrmod&action=display&thread=146422)...which will give me space and dryness to store the MR2. That will, as of me, leave May with: * 1 Passat for commuting * 1 MX5 for wife duties and weekends * 1 Locost 7 chassis awaiting MX5 in November for its built, sat in corner 1 of the Skunkworks * 1 Camaro in corner 2 * 1 MR2 in corner 3 Leaving me with 1 workshop for the magic to happen in corner 4. *TLC, see here: As for the Image wheels, see how that Locost will run MX5 4x100 hubs, wont be built soon, but will need to be utterly epic when finished? That was no accident.... ;D

So i'm broke. Knowing fine well that the wheels will be the cause of the horrific judder, i set about finding other potential catalysts to the situation. First up? The sleeve joint in the steering shaft. This part allows minor judders to be absorbed, basically there is a rubber joint in there. Only now its fairly worn and there is a power of slack in there. My logic is that this slack will cause a mild judder to feel like a massive one due to the looseness. Cure? Remove shaft: ...and weld: Result? Steering feels a LOT sharper. There was definitely too much play here. However, its just exacerbated the judder due to the reduction in dampening. Essentially, the rubber wearing has been a result of the judder, not a cause of it. Back to the piggy bank...

So today my hand was forced and i had to take the MR2 into work again (20 mile commute). God damn she's in a bad way.
The welded shaft now snaps my fingers with the vibration, but worse was to come....
I had found the temp level creep up the last time i had her out. It was 2 minutes from the house so i limped her home. Found it was low on water, so topped it up (about a litre). Thought nothing more of it....
Took it into work and about 17 miles in the temp needle is skyrocketing again. Arsecakes.
Its as if its saying "I know theres a turbo coming my way, and by god it better be quick or I'll just continuously curse word myself...."
Anyone got a 3S-GTE?

So the plot thickens... Had to take her a quick blast across town. Made it 200 metres before something exploded in the engine bay, accompanied by a strong burning smell. I'm guessing a seized alternator that has been allowing the belt to drag, causing the water pump not to circulate coolant enough which may have cooked the head, or the pump itself being humped. Either way, its a tow truck home tonight....

Gonads! Still, you will love the 3SGTE - try and get one of the Rev3's from mid 1994 on - more power and less fussy as it doesn't have an AFM.

So its finally happening. After several months of monster garage building, i have raised a spanner in anger on my first project. 3 years in and the Big Swap is finally in progress!! Up she goes! Loom and ancillaries off Bit more height and hubs off.

Bit more mount removal... Just got the welds to flatten down. Took that anti-rust goo off too. Then i got trigger happy with the grinder...

So these arrived! Cheeky homer from a local fab shop, just need to get them welded in and the car will hold a 3S-GTE! While i was at it, i pulled this out last night... The fuel tank. No the easiest thing in the world to remove. Needs to come out as the stock AW11 pump is nowhere near enough for a turbo lump. Time for a Walbro. That also marks the last part that needs to actually come off the car. From this point on, its all crazy new parts going back on...

So i got a new bench... Well, when i saw new, i dragged it out a bin because some numbnut chucked it for 2 bent legs... A quick conversation with a vice and... As such, i felt the need to make use of it, and get my cleanliness OCD on a bit: Subframe coming off... Wee Nitromors session and this will be getting a lick of paint. In the meantime, i got the wire brush onto these: Before and after. 22V rear brake upgrade, and about time too. Quick Hammerite session later: Lovely. Got time to kill before the engine arrives so i thought it wise to start making things look nice... Engine bay next: Smooth and ready for welding.
