I don't think it really matters, as long as the owner is happy to allow car meets, the fact it happens to have an older car theme is a good thing, theres a few pubs near me that have regular car meets and they are just normal pubs the rest of the time, people still go and enjoy them.

I presume this would be a far easier location to get to than the Ace for non-Southerners. Unless in being non-southern you're in any way West-wards as the Ace is only 5 mins from the bottom of the M1. "The right crowd and no crowding" at the 8 Ball I hope I was going to say that.. even when i lived in sheffield, I'd have still gone to the ace as I've family that way now the ace is a 110 mile round trip for me and the 8 ball would be 250.. Still tis good to see these spring up, funny how this one is generating so much awareness, good brand building and with enough contacts to waken half the country Brian burrows behind it and VZi cant really fail can it There is a very similar building on the A33 just south of reading, looks the same, I'm guessing an old run down little theif chef - the one on the A33 does good breakfats, has tried to become 'diner stylee' but isnt doing too well also, iirc there is another well known diner somewhere nr derby, on the A50 i think So they are popping up, Mrs Lawsy and I ever since doing Route 66 have fancied opening one up too

It's t' wrong end of t'country from me, but it looks great! Would be a good place for an RR meet, I think places like this deserve the support of the retro car community. What I thought, but then (I keep forgetting this) there is the same style Diner on Pride park I think we need a RR meetup there.

We had one on the A127, called "The A127 Diner" funnily enough, it all went tits up there though as it turned out the owner was a bit of a toerag.

Well I wish them well with their venture.
Seems like a good venue to have an east area meet, I look forward to meeting other RR members there soon?

Given the things that eventually came to light it may not have been as simple as the oil being to hot, theres info online about what when on at the diner if you search for it.

There's a new 50's style diner opening on the 19th of this month on the A12 Colchester bound side between Kelvedon and Witham on the old Little Chef site called the 8 ball Diner. www.8balldiner.com. It's actually already open, It's just that Sat is the open day. So pop in if your passing. Looks like a great venue, menu looks good and they do root beer so I'm pleased. I'm going to skip Sat because from what I hear It's going to be rammed and mostly with VZI'ers-I'd been advised to get there early afternoon. I'll be darkening their doors in the near future, further away for me than Ace but certainly easier to get to especially with all them Olympic roadworks round the 406. i notice it had open signs out this morning. if the weekend is gunna be a vzi free for all, i think ile give it a miss actually. i might pop in and see about sorting something like a midweek meet for R-Rers though, if some of the locals would be up for attending? say once a month on a tues or thurs eve?

I don't get it whys it suddenly cool because its got a few lame signs stuck on it ,proper poor effort imo bet it will be full of wana be teddy boys in pt cruisers because its a concerted effort by car enthusiasts for car enthusiasts, to have a dedicated meeting venue within the essex/east angular area, somewhere that could actually rival the ace as a meeting point(granted it lacks the history). the venue is well placed on the largest major road serving this part of the country, and has a very large, newly laid, perfectly flat car park with no speed bumps. granted brain, brett, et al are businessmen, then wouldnt throw money at this if they're not gunna get any back, but there also no denying they're hardcore car guys too, and have a knack for creating a 'scene'- half the VW shows in this country are run by them or have their involvement in some capacity- but they're not just into VWs either. if you don't get it, no ones asking you to participate, crawl back under your rock and leave us to enjoy it. personally, i appreciate them taking the risk of investing in such a proposition, so am willing to support them by way of my patronage.

Great post, regardless of who turns up in what vehicle it's still another place where like minded enthusiasts can go and have a natter, admire what's in the car park & have an evening out. Just hope it's well supported and the support continues! Try finding a 1950's 'diner' type building in the UK that's vacant that would have sufficient space to accomodate a load of vehicles. Regardless of the building it'll be the people that go & the people that run the place that'll create the vibe, I've had many an enjoyable evening standing in the car park of a modern pub in the centre of Milton Keynes talking to like minded car nuts. Didn't worry me that I was in a modern surrounding at a pub that resembled all the others. Great effort by those involved to set this up, I was nattering to a friend ages ago about someone opening a diner that could be used by car & bike people to meet up at. Sure the Ace has history but there's nothing stopping this new place becoming part of history amongst car & bike enthusiasts.

Dez, I'll certainly be up for a visit when I'm over that way. Maybe a breakfast on our way to the swap meet and hook-up with anyone else who wants to eat some full English before hitting the Essex Arena?
I must say, my heart did sink a little when I saw the external shots. Masses of effort obviously gone into making the inside look 50's/retro....and a lot of work on the marketing/image/events/promotion, yet from the outside it doesn't look like they've put any effort in at all!
It wouldn't take a lot to make it look a LOT more retro. Currently it looks like a Little Chef with some different signs on (funny that!) - I know a few people have commented that it doesn't matter....but personally I think it does. All the effort gone into promoting it as a 50's/retro experience, yet the bit you see when you first drive up to it (first impressions) doesn't really match up to the website or interior shots. It's not really the whole package!
Don't get me wrong, I want it to succeed and will be there showing my support whenever in the area (360 mile round trip for me!) but I just think with some careful consideration to the exterior, they overall package will be greatly enhanced which can only be a good thing for business.
It'll never look like the Art Deco facade of the Ace Cafe, but it currently won't inspire people to be lining up for shots of their cars outside it either. This is one of the (many) things that makes the Ace so appealing - but it's an important one.
Imagine having the chance to spend an evening with Cameron Diaz while she's trapped inside the face & body of Jocelyn Wildenstein. That just about sums it up for me....

Yes the building is a little plain but I think that is something that could change over time remember this is the uk were people are best at complaining over anything else change to the outside of the building straight away would probably start other people off winging about it ruining the area ect...

Funny people are so quick to jump to the defense of this place?!? Seems a strange reaction to some fairly justified critisism given it IS a business trying to take our money. If you're gonna build a 50s diner, it might pay to have it actually looking like one don't you think?! Anyone know the one up past cambridge? Been past a few times, it actually looks the part and has plenty of parking.

Not much 50's about a bare grass field but that don't stop 100's of old cars meeting up for shows every summer. but this is a 50s themed diner
