Sorry to bump an old thread but I've come to love tape decks, when I got my 190 it had a really nice Blaupunkt Atlanta in it, and even after buying a nice Sony CD player I couldn't bring myself to pull it out, so I just started scouring eBay for tapes. Here's mine (yeah I know its mucky)... I actually love the sound quality, it does have a warmth that you don't get with CDs, even got a deck for the house now. Anyone know how to clean the tape heads? I tried a cleaner cassette and it jammed it, managed to get it out with a knife with no damage done but that was close.

One of my wife's friends was moving house and asked us to take a big pile of LP's and loads of pre recorded cassettes to the tip. I gave the LP's away via Freecycle and kept the cassettes myself. Lots of classics that I hadn't got on CD so a welcome addition to my music collection. Problem however was I hadn't got a cassette player in the house (got 3 or 4 nice car items "in store") and it took me a while to find a decent (Sony) portable item that was still made new ! It's like being back in the late 80's again Paul h

You clean tape heads with a cotton bud soaked in isopropyl alcohol. You used to be able to get it in little bottles from Boots, record shops, Woolworths and such. A chemist / pharmacy should still be able to decant a little into a medicine bottle for you as it's a medical wipe solution. Also check out £1 stores for DVD / CD / Video cleaners as they sometimes come with a little bottle for the "wet" type cleaners.

My wife still has the first mixtape I made for her when I was trying to catch her eye back in '95. It must have been a good one, it worked. ;D Thread resurection - so does mine although she has nothing to play it on, and when she did she had to skip the song on it that was playing when she crashed her first car.....

I still have a few tapes from when I was first getting into music at 10-11, that was around 1998 and you'd get huge bargain bins of tapes for £1.99 in HMV to rummage through, remember pawing through piles of Spice Girls singles and finding a copy of Nevermind by Nirvana, good times.
As for cleaning the heads, can I access them without taking the stereo apart?

Wow, resurrection indeed. I can recall clearly a visit to Dixons in 1987 and brought (On finance!) a Goodman cassette deck with a separate graphic equalizer, spent all weekend working out how you wire into a fugged Vauxhall Victor FE got four sanyo huge teak boxed speakers attached to it and the sound (back then) was awesome lasted 3 months till some little s hite noticed a £100 quid bit of gear in a shoddily protected bit of early 70's tin... I was gutted beyond gutted as I still had 9 months payments and they took my Adam and the Ants greatest hits tape with it by curse word

As for cleaning the heads, can I access them without taking the stereo apart? On a car tape deck it is as easy to remove the radio and open the case up. I spent a while last year modding old car stereos so that they had a line in for mp3. Where-ever possible I kept the tape decks functional as I actually like the way they sound. Most of the units are dead easy to open up and it makes gaining access to the tape head much easier.

I have literally hundreds of tapes in the loft - shoebox upon shoebox full of them
I have been saying for more than a decade that I'd sort them out but it's a daunting task

I have a pioneer item i bought in 1993 - for a radio cassette the sound quality was superb. Still in the garage in "case logic" bag i bought for it.
My sd1 still has it's philips item - however the tape deck no longer works - i will get it sorted at some point.

my MX5 had nothing when I bought it, so I stuck an old late 90's panasonic tape deck lying around from n one of my Saabs years ago. Sound quality IMHO is much better than an average CD/USB. Luckily I still have tons of tapes left over from the 80's...:-) It's quite a late deck as it has motorised load/eject, wow! ;-)
