Hi All, Here is my Mercedes 407d. I've owned it for approximately 7 years, in that time it's been mainly off the road. Last time it was parked up due to oil leaking onto the clutch at the end of the summer, this was followed by a bad winter in which I forgot to put anti freeze in the rad, plonker, it now doesn't have an engine in it any more. Also in the photo is my Land Rover Series 2 A pulling the Merc out of the field it was stored in. I am currently doing a complete rebuild on this car, which I will start a different thread for. Once the Land Rover is finished I will start on the van again. I can't find any photos of the interior, it's a lovely old van though and I can't wait to get it back on the road and have some fun bumbling about in it. It had the OM616 2.4d engine out of the Merc cars in it, coupled to a relatively low ratio gearbox meaning it was massively under powered. I would be interested to hear peoples suggestions on a suitable more modern/powerful replacement engine and box for it. I'd like to work on it over next winter so have got plenty of time to source the right set up. Thanks, Rob

this beasty runs an stock OM606 lump, just with a Scania truck turbo and uprated fuelling ! short spec walk through video; he comments something along the lines of "transmission is rated for 820 Nm, so we're pushing that" 600 lbft he thinks I doubt you'd need to take it to the same level, but gives an idea of what car based engines you could use

Nice,It will be interesting to see what engines fit in.My vans a 3.8 and slow.A 2.4 must have been tractor like. I like the 3.8 engines. Me and a mate did a camper conversion to 608d, but you're right they aren't quick. The 2.4 a good engine just to small and the gearbox is just to low. First gear is a crawler gear so not really used then you only have 3 more so by 20 mph you're in 4th. By 50 mph you are deaf. Neither the driver or the engine could probably cope with anything more. The 407d is a bit smaller and is rated at 3.5 tonne, which is good as it's probably one of the biggest old buses I can drive on my licence. I'm thinking something around a 3.0 with a 5 speed box might be quite good, hopefully the diff might be swappable as well.

I need a headlight unit for a horsebox version of this - any ideas about where I can track down parts? Am new to all this!

Hmmm - maybe you could fit a OM602 or 603 turbo. The OM61X range is not the most economical... A mate has one of these, also a 407D - good god is it slow ;D And quite heavy on fuel consumption. Might have to do with his having a huge alcove camper body ;D As aerodynamic as a house ;D Btw: awesome tow car!!

They turn up every once in a while on ebay, I had loads of trouble with mine failing on the MOT. I got them re-chromed but it still failed, I ended up grafting in some lights from a later van to get it through the test, they look rubbish though and when I get round to spending some time and money on it I'll improve on it. The best place to try for parts for these is a company in Germany dedicated to them called Roadhouse, there's loads of stuff on their website and most of it can be understood when you run it through Google translate - www.roadhouse-parts.de/Post some pics, it would be good to see your van.

Slow and deafening but so much character. Driving it feels like piloting a barge down the road. I'm used to Land Rovers so speed isn't to much of an issue, a little faster would be nice but it's the cost to wallet and hearing that is the main issue. Well the 616 engine is gone now so it has got to be replaced with something. Cheers, the land rover is just starting to be put back together after a re-furb, it's going to look a bit different and have a Rover V8. Lots of oak this time instead of pine, bare ali panels. I've admired the work you are doing to your Merc (and your drive way), quality job!

Thanks for the advice - I'll keep searching. That's the only parts-based thing she failed on, but I'm guessing I won't be there for the 14-day retest window.
I would put a picture in if I could work out how to do it!

Where are you, maybe you might be able to borrow one for the MOT, if that is all it has failed on it would be a shame to not get it back within the retest period. You can also e-mail Roadhouse, their English is good.

I got the headlight from Roadhouse who were very quick and efficient. That's all fitted and looks fab. BUT I need a new exhaust, and Roadhouse don't have them. Will other exhausts fit? Are exhausts a standard-ish sort of thing, like tyres? Where is a good place to start looking? Thanks, Suzanne
