Seems that some peopl ehere are pretty committed to the marque of car that they own, particulalrly the skoda boys for some reason. Now some of teh older sko's are pretty little coupés, but the best ever...
So I was thinking... do you own your retro because you firmly believe that it's the best car ever built, or has some other kind of unhealthy hold on you? Or if the lottery fairy smiled on you would you drop your car like a hot potato and buy the car you really always wanted.
oh and what would it be?

I certainly don't think my XR4i is anything special. It's heavy, cumbersome, slow and ugly.
But for the car holds a special appeal I can't put my finger on. I just think it needs me and I need it. I've certainly not sell it if I won the lottery but I would buy plenty of other cars.

I'm not commited to any one marque particularly, i love the shape of Mk1 Golfs tho, and if i won the lottery i'd probably spend a stupid amount getting mine just how i wanted. But then i'd buy a Lamborgini Miura SV as well...

difficult because the cars I have I love and are close to what I would have bought anyway evenif I had loads mre money. The big deal is that I've ended up with a couple of 4 door cars which I'd rather have had as 2 doors, but the 2 dors were unavailable or too expensive, so I'm now kinda into the 4 doors anyway.
A lottery win would just mean I'd have more cars and more chance of getting them finished.

I'm not a one marque man, but i always tend to lean towards vw's - especially the aircooleds.
I'm building my dream car, so a lottery win wouldnt change that. It would help me clear some of the debt if build up in the process though! lol

If I won the lotter I'd pay to have my girlfriends mini done up to stop her bitching about it. Then I'd buy a Triumph Vitesse convertible and let Jigsaw racing play with it ;D

As above, with the big win I'd keep the Opels, and do all the resto/tarting necessary. I'd also buy a lot more, some of which would be rwd Opel, but also rwd Escorts, Mk1 Grannie etc.

Easy part of your question - given the mythical lottery win I would just have more of what I've got, from more marques, in better condition (in a big, big shed, like an old grain store or hangar). I like far too many different things to commit myself to just one expensive car.
The 240K is the one constant in my collection. It's easy enough to look after, not too expensive to run, looks interesting, and is reliable. The lazy way it drives is perfect for my taste. One day it will get some money and time thrown at it, and I'll keep it as long as I possibly can. After 8+ years it has a lot of sentimental value.
It is easy to get drawn into a marque, I find anyway. You have one, discover more about them, buy another for spares, then as you're in the club find out about some rarity that has to be saved, and so it goes.
I've said before that I aim to be more open-minded when it comes to my next daily driver purchase, just see what's about at the time. RR is a good place for inspiration, reassurance and knowledge about so many different makes. The Starlet was a good random buy earlier this year, I like the unexpectedness of not knowing what will be next.

Good thread, i was just thinking of posting a thread about GM kit that is appealing to me - might do that shortly. Love or money? both i suppose I don't know why i got into Fords at all, mystery to me. I guess i like the handling, weight, and the modest image. I'm leaning to more modern J stuff now but how can you not notice these capable beasts! I certainly wouldn't rush out and get a Ferrari etc if i won lotto, i'd grab a muscle car and Bowler Wildcat long before that!

lol...hmm...i'm not one marque obsessed (turns away from new sig ) lmao yeah, i love skodas. but i can totally see the point of other marques and really don't think they are the best cars in the world. they are the most featured marque in my dream list, but i don't think they are the best cars in the world. the reason i like skoda's is because when i got into them (yes, i have liked them for that long) they were still the butt of all jokes and no one liked them and it was good to own something so good that no one else knew about. the character contained in a rear engined skoda is great if you ask me. i've yet to find a car with so much character...though i'm not really qualified to say. i don't think that skoda are the best cars in the world though and i can fully appricate many other makes of car.

I'm not at all marque happy. My Mercedes is really my "steady" car - I have others but they come and go. It's slow, a bit rusty, and needs some spanner love... but I love it. And if the lottery win was to come my way I'd definitely keep it. I do think Mercedes are some of the best engineered cars in the world (well, up to the early '80's anyway), but that's not why I own it, or particularly why I like it. I've owned rear engined Skodas which have amazed me in their ingenuity as much as the Benz does. Can't explain why I like it so much, but it's pretty much a part of me now and I don't think I'll ever sell it.

I think the marquee addition centres around who you know, for example I took a passing interest in Datsuns as my folks owned a few. When I got round to buying one (after owning air cooled VWs, French cars and the occasional Italian car) I saw the reasoning for owning such a marque beyond nostalgia, mostly being reliability, styling and ease of maintenance. The Datsun owner club and members were instrumental in making me appriciate other models, but then again I have been obsessed with 70s cars since a child.
As for my current cars being the bees knees....well lets just say like a relationship you tend to put up and oversee the faults. If I won the lottery I would keep my existing fleet and simply buy more obscure J tat. I doubt whether I would consider buying a 240Z. Too obvious.

That'd be one of the first cars on my list, but probably the only J one. Oh, might be persuaded by a Stanza if I could find one, only because I learnt to drive in one.

:)I'm happy to admit that I am totally obsessed with Skodas, particularly the rear engined models which have become a huge part of my life,to the extent that I can't imagine not having one. The fact that they are cheap is not an issue,I've spent as much on my Skodas as a lot of people do on more expensive marques. They are deffo not the best cars in the world in a logical sense, but in my heart they are. They just have an unexplainable magical charm that I really do find irrestible. Somehow they just fit me,like a pair of knackered old trainers fit better than a much nicer pair of smart shoes. Saying that, there are many other makes/models of cars I like too, just not any where near as much!

I've got the amazon because i fell in love with it, so if i won the lottery, it would just mean she'd be finished in a month, not 5 years. oh, and i'd also own a... Old skool 911 turbo V-Dub split screen, (mint) A range of yanks And the compulsory child killa ... and then, on the 2nd week, i'd go shopping again ;D

I own the Volvo because I'd wanted one after riding in them when they were new in the '80s, plus the desire to carry heavy loads effortlessly, but it's the first one I've had. Given the funding I'd slap a serious turbo'd Volvo lump in and get some airbags for the sake of getting it lower and still being able to use it.
But if I saw a family sized hot rod for the right money........
