So we had Flying Cars a little while back, thought it’s probably time for floating cars. Cast off astern! Probably the most well known, the German built Amphicar had a Triumph Herald engine in the back, sorry, stern! The Dutton Mariner, one of several amphibious cars produced by Tim Dutton, he of Pheaton fame. The Gibbs Aquada lifts its wheels out of the water to minimise drag and is the worlds first High Speed Amphibian, they say. According to their website WaterCar are builders of the world’s fastest amphibian. The video of their Python at speed makes a convincing case…! The Volkswagen-built Schwimmwagen, a kind of swimming Beetle and the most numerous mass-produced amphibious car in history. The American version of the same thing, the Ford GPA was also known as the SEEP (seagoing jeep), surely the worst name ever for an amphibious car… The Rinspeed Splash. Not really a floating car, more of a hydrofoiling car. Which I suspect is cheating…. As is the sQuba from the same barking mad company. More of a sinking car, this…. And finally, talking of sinking cars and seeing as I love Heralds… Got any others?!

The resemblance of the 'Amphicar' to the Herald is well known although the designer was smart not to copy the radiator grille like the Herald as well ;D What I want to know is why no one has copied the fins off the rear of the Amphicar on to a Herald yet? Those fins (maybe exagerated just a little) on a Herald would look Ace!

Gearbox is Porsche 356 derived. Keeping up the TV theme here's James May's boat again, and the Salvage squad Amphicar.

and before top gear played with amphibious cars, Peter Duncan tried to cross either the Irish Sea or English Channel in a Beetle in 1985 on his TV show "Duncan Dares"
