Hello taunus fellow! I think that fitting a 2.0 OHC is a better solution than a 2.3 or 2.0 V6. It is almost plug and play, lighter than a v6 and it has almost the same power as a 2.3. I own a 1.3 L 2door and i want to do the same swap. I can share with you a PDF book about how you can modify a pinto engine. Just sent a private message with your email or email me at edwscho@ yahoo . com .

I am told that the gearbox has to be changed as well and I am also going to change the rear axle.

I have had it with the 1.6 low compression Pinto. It is boring and it is giving me problems(overheating, oil leaks) I have bought a "doner" car and this: will be replaced with this:

What a lovely looking car, being a 2 door really looks good. I must get my backside into gear and get my mk4 back on the road soon.

Lovely to see this back at the top of the board. It really is a gorgeous car. So, how has the engine swap gone? A friend had the 2.3 Taunus and it was such a smooth engine. It made a great noise when it was being thrashed as well ?

Started the first step in "upgrading" my Taunus this weekend by removing the original small rear axle with 4.11:1 differential and 8” brakes. The new axle from my donor car is an “Atlas” with 3.44:1 differential and 9” brakes. 100 km/h went from 4000rpm to 3300rpm, much more comfortable and quiet ride and the brakes are better. The 2.3 V6 from the donor car is waiting and optional upgrades are new wheels, I am thinking 7” wide Minilights or original Ford RS wheels. A little bit lower and stiffer springs are also an option.

You have a beautiful car there Einar. We don't see many two door examples here in New Zealand. I have never seen a two door Mk4 here. I believe the few two door Cortinas we do see are almost all private imports. What we did get both here and in Australia was the option of the 3.3 and 4.1 litre inline six cylinder engines as fitted to the Ford Falcon of the time. My choice of engine replacement for the car you have would be the 4.1 litre cast iron head crossflow. You would of course need the heavier suspension and stronger differential from the donor car also. Would such a conversion even be legal in Austria?

It would most likely be legal, but to find these engines in Europa is hard or more likely not possible. The biggest engine in Taunus/Cortina in Europa was the 2.3 liter V6, a 2.8 version of the V6 from a Granada or Capri is also not so hard to find but I will use the 2.3 since I already have it.

Excellent car Einar - and a very interesting write-up so far. If you ever come to Switzerland on a Sunday or Sunny-day drive, let me know !

Same colour as my dad's old Escort 1.6 ghia NGK918P. Memory lane! Was an auto and I learned to drive between that and the manual driving school datsun cherry....reason I have always been comfortable with any transmission!.
