as mentioned in the other thread, my sister is finishing uni for the summer and wants a car. it has to be cheap to buy and cheap to insure. needs to be located in the north-east too. would be handy if it had tax and mot too. i've found this...and i *dare i say it* like it? HEALTH WARNING!i believe pog had a mk3 astra for a while? what are they like? is it gonna give her trouble-free motoring? she has already had an insurance quote on it for £600 for a full year!! mods feel free to delete if you feel its not appropiate.

its the spotlights...it really is...they look soo cool You've got it real baaaaaad!!! It loks like a cheapo 'Merit' spec astra (non-metallic paint and non-tinted glass) with spotlights lashed on the front!!! Horrific! You are gonna regret saying that in the morning! etc.

no...you see the reason why it is likable is because i know that it could be bought and thrashed without a care in the world about the car. its cheap crappy motoring at its best, and therefore likable. i wouldn't go out of my way to buy one, or really want one, but the fact that the car is so cheap and usable therefore means that any idea of motoring with it is going to fun and attractive. it was like when tonycc and his gang were younger and used to drive round in knackered chevettes...it's exactly the same. its over 10 years old, and is simply an old banger. a basis of a great first car, and a base that many members on here had. sure it wont set the world on fire in any category, but it'll be cheap thrills and quicker than using the bus - therefore ticking all of the boxes.

just remember that its a buyers market. why not stick to what you know and get her a skoda. or a rust resistant VW or volvo?!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

my mate just scrapped one of these, it failed it mot on a rusty boot floor, holes in the sills and arches. it wasn't particularly reliable ether. I'd say avoid and get some thing J or german which would take the abuse ;D

I've had a couple of these Rover 214's If you find a decent SEI like the one pictured you get alloy's leccy windows and a few other toys and because they were made when Rover were working with Honda they don't seem to rust. Maybe not to everyones taste but gotta be better than a MK3 Astra!

my mate had a 214, bit dull but quite perky, solid, comfy and dependable, considered one as a DD. not bad IMO.
My mate got his written off and got a newer rover, MG shaped one, my god that was curse word, no end of problems. what a POS that was

The cheek of it Seriously though I wouldnt entertain getting one of those as a daily driver I actually bought one for a friend of mine a couple of months ago when he had come over from Japan and they are fuggin terrible to drive. They are not the most reliable of cars either. Buy a peugeot 205,309,306 much more entertaining to drive.

I had a 416GSi that shape. Nice car for its time. They do warp the discs though so check they are OK before buying.
A mate got a M reg 218D about 2 & a half years ago. Does 80 miles a day in it, been serviced once by me a year ago and he changed the oil about a week ago. It needed a back box on the exhaust and thats it.
It takes the abuse. Has about 160K on the clock now.

i believe pog had a mk3 astra for a while? what are they like? is it gonna give her trouble-free motoring? Hmmm... 1400cc Astra. A good friend of mine had one of these for a few years. They are faster than you would expect and handle nicely (his was the GT version, though, with sporty suspension. the standard car might be curse word). Reliability is an issue, though, as the engine has a tension to blow the headgasket (three times in 150000km). As regards the alternatives, I don't have much experience with Rovers, but I agree that small Peugeots are very reliable and fun to drive, especially 306s.

Well I suppose it's better than a Mk5 Escort (not hard really) For my sins I bought a Hyundai Pony a couple of years back, just as a box to ferry me to work and back in. But it was terminally dull, and I wished I'd got something better (retro). But maybe she's not interested in retro, in which case something like a Mk3 Disastra would be fine.

Yeah, we've had two of the fugga's.
I had a 1.4LSi HI-TORQ a few years back. It was the most dreary car ever, and painfully slow to boot. However it didn't break down once in the 18 months / 30,000 miles I had it. All I had to do was feed it petrol every so often. And I made a profit on it at the end of the day.
My missus kept absconding with it as it was mildly preferable to her 1.0 shatpank corser, so I got her a 1.6GLSi (one of the last of that shape). Again, dreary. And that one fell to bits too, much to my displeasure.
Not a bad car, just very, very boring.

hmm...
there was a rover like that on ebay...with leccy windows and the honda engine, however, the tax and MOT were up for re-newal in july; whereas the astra has tax and MOT until march 07.
i thought about peugeot, but have heard bad things about reliability.
basically, she'll have anything. cheap as possible and located in the north with MOT and tax. was just thinking here that a metro might be quite good.
Anyone know of any cheap cars in the NE?
thing is, that astra finishes tomorrow and my sister is coming home at the weekend...hmm.....thoughts?
